MacBook Pro Upgrade At Photokina?

Good question - I've wondered this myself... I noticed a few weeks ago while screwing around with the Apple website that you could choose an Apple Store and order online. The name of the store location shows up on the Apple Store page , but I'm not really sure what the point of it is... I don't see an "in store pickup" option. I'm thinking no... anyone know??

Dreaming really (note 1920 res. hack for PB thread here has over 100k views, Apple get a clue!), but hopefully the delay has more to do with better upgrades, vid chip (Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX, 512 MB please), a true HD screen (WQUXGA would be even nicer, 4k res, yeah baby, just the ticket for Leopard and the 17in model), etc. ; than limited supply of Merom's...why put them in the iMac 1st when the profit margin is higher on the MBP's- which are in more need of an early upgrade than the iMac?



Dell already has these features in one of it's expensive laptops (though almost twice as thick, which makes it much easier to implement):

i would highly doubt a 7900GTX cooling would be a huge issue, unless they underclocked it, but I think somthing around the lines of MAYBE a 7900GT. Oh and by the way^^ I do believe you can order a BTO at apple stores and just pick it up when it comes in

Aye, and I have noticed that Apple was very smart to market their line as notebooks rather than laptops. A notebook you put on a table and have less of a chance of getting another "McDonald's hot coffee burns lap" suit.

I would just like to note (yes, pun intended) that all computer manufacturers refer to their portable computers as notebooks. The only people that still call them laptops are consumers.

I am curious tho, if people placed their orders now and lets say the new mbp comes out on the 19th, then how will they adjust the specs and price for the one you ordered and the one that ships? Will they contact you ahead of time or just send you a similar spec based on your price?

Any ideas?

IMO, these are the least that Apple can do to keep up with other high performance notebooks in the market. I think new MBP's will arrive one the same day as Photokina although they may not be highlighted at the event.

the keyboard is the main reason i didn't buy a macbook

I'll guess 12", 15" and 17". I read somewhere they're expecting a 12".

The 12" is a unverified rumor to be taken with a large grain of salt at this point. I would think they would just soup up a MB and sell it as a MBP before they made a 12" again. Of course, you never know with apple.

If they souped up a 13.3" MB enclosure, wouldn't it require a serious overhaul of the appropriate internals, especially ditching the integrated graphics for a dedicated solution? (Not that Jonathan Ive & Co would have much of a problem making it happen.) Before I went to the recently opened Apple Store in Norfolk, VA, I might have considered a 13.3" MBP. But after having played around with the 17"... I'm in love. When Tuesday cometh, I'll be ordering a 17" MBP... merom or yonah. From all the shipping delays, merom is looking more hopeful all the time!

Preach it, brutha! I was always hooked on the MBP, but my original idea was for the 15" version. After going to the apple store a few times, the 17" is the one I can't do without. Especially considering it's going to be a desktop replacement for my tower PC, I'll take all the screen space I can get. Add to that the fact that because it's footprint is larger, heat dissipates a little more efficiently, and I was sold. As soon as those C2D MBP's hit the street, I'm there, cash in hand.

Not to jump on your claim, because everyone has been making the comparison, but there is a bit of a difference. It was well known the G5 was a large, power hungry furnace and we had seen no evidence of a successful miniaturization. We were waiting on engineers to overcome a pretty difficult set of problems.

This time, there is already a chip. It's in machines. Even Apple machines. I could touch it, look at it, even use it in other models. Never was this the case with a mobile G5.

Except that Apple has typically released only the 15 inch model before later introducing the 17 (and 12 when they existed) when they do major updates. Witness the introduction of the Al case and the Intel switch. Of course it matters whether this is a major update. If, like the iMacs, there is not a major case redesign and it is just a processor bump then expect them to be released simultaneously. But if there is a change in case, I would be surprised (pleasantly though) if the 17 came out at the same time.

You need to brush up on your Mac history.

Original Aluminum PowerBook G4 was only 17" for 8 long months introduced January 7, 2003 at MacWorld Expo SF by Steve Jobs. It ran at 1GHz and had two USB 1.1 ports.

The first 15" PM G4 in an Aluminum case running @ 1GHz & 1.25GHz with two USB 2 ports didn't appear until Paris Apple Expo September 16 2003, also introduced by Steve Jobs in his Paris keynote that morning. At that same time the 17" lost the USB 1.1 ports and went USB 2 also as well as to a top speed of 1.33GHz. Only 3 short years ago today.

So there is no predictable introduction order. But this time it MUST be the whole line because of the C2D leap.

Ok people, how's this? I ordered a 17" MBP on Sep 8. I upgraded the ram and hard drive. It was supposed to ship yesterday, the 15th.

I checked my order status today and the ship date has changed to October 2! I also received an e-mail from Apple stating that there were unexpected delays.

I held out hoping for a C2D but broke down and bought on the 8th. I was all excited that it was going to ship yesterday. I don't even care so much about a C2D, I just want my Mac. But here's hoping anyway.

Just wanted to add, for everyone reading a lot into shipping dates etc., I ordered mine on Sep 11 and got the notice of delays, then notice it was shpped out today (was planning on cancelling after this news).

Now, it will probably be around the 25th before I get, and I won't open it, but considering I have upgrades (so customization = no return) how hard do you guys think it would be for me to exchange it for an updated one?

I ordered my iPod literally the day before the changeover. They then emailed me with the option of keeping original order (with new pricing) or changing to new one (and lose student rebate option). They have a 'transition' page and everything to make your decision, so I would assume they'd do the same with active MBP orders.

You're going to have to be aggressive about returning it. If I were you I would try to refuse accepting delivery and call your credit card company and tell them you don't want it so they will force Apple to accept your refusal to receive it.

My estimated ship date was Sep 20, which is why I was caught off guard when it shipped today.

Mine wasn't a 17, it was the middle line 15".
