Here is another very detailed thread posted today about mavericks slowing his system. Is he lying? Doesn't seem to be to me. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1705184/. No need to argue with me though. I love my mac and would never ever go back to windows. My imac is in another world altogether compared to my windows xp I've had for the last 10 years. And it will always be. Even if OS X 20 slows it down a tad.

Mavericks is a lot faster than previous OS releases. They made a lot of under the hood changes to make things better.

What I've usually seen when you have reports of "This OS update made things worse" is that it's actually hard drive failure. An operating system update consists of gigs of files that typically stresses a drive and can bring out failures. OS updates are one of the most stressful things a drive will do. I used to work in IT, and 99% of the time, when a drive failed, it was during an OS update. And it always came back as "Ever since I got the OS update my machine has been slow."

Of course not, Couple of posters seemed to think his disk was too full. That is hardly the fault of the OS.

I'm not trying to argue, simply suggesting you delve into the root cause of the issues and don't allow your self to become disheartened by user symptoms posted on a forum, they will always seem to be more common than their root causes, its just the nature of how technology users describe their issues.

TBH almost ANY failure soon (user-defined period), after an update HAS to be because of the update....just human nature :)

Having 4GB of RAM is your problem. My late 2008 Al MacBook is running Mavericks and guess what? Same performance as day 1. No slow downs. However, I must admit to have boosted it's RAM capacity to 8GB.

Note - I have not added the SSD yet, and I am very sure that adding one will add a bigger performance boost to this machine.

His memory pressure is GREEN, he isn't swapping ANYTHING. How is his 4GB RAM an issue?

He DOES (did actually), have disk errors and has fixed them....

Doesn't Mavericks use a new *compressed memory architecture*? I would think it would run BETTER on 4GB of RAM.

@jav6454
People who chalk everything up to a RAM issue really prove how much they have absolutely no clue about what they are talking about. Why would you give such definitive advice when you yourself are talking out your rear end? Do you even understand how much RAM 4GB is? 4GB of ram is AMPLE memory for mavericks. But then again, you didn't even take the time to look at the screenshots which clearly show memory in the green.

& FWIW, maybe apple is trying to teach the same lesson microsoft is. updates = bad. You should absolutely NEVER update until your applications demand an operating system update. Even then, let someone else "upgrade" first and see how their machine reacts, never be the person that installs something on release day (or release week, or release month for that matter). There's no point in being OCD about system updates, only person you're hurting is yourself & same goes for your mobile phone. Nowadays, updates are generally always a bad thing. Searching around the net, its VERY obvious Mavericks screwed over exponentially more users than it provided a positive experience for. People on their hackintoshes are achieving more success than actual legit Macs. So much for being the UNIX that works.

I waited until 10.9.4 (2-3 days ago, before accepting the "Free upgrade" from Mountain Lion...)
(Seriously, ML was a solid OS. Maybe Apple is hiring devs from the Windows team. Get your **** together)

(But you should still take all security updates, of course...)

So when Yosemite is released, you should stop and think about why you want to "upgrade", other than the App store nag (Its become MUCH more annoying in newer OS revisions)... Do yourself a favor and stay away until 10.10.4 at the very least.

I suspect a bad drive. Is the mac under warranty still?

So the computer is a lot faster after the disk repair but I still have a lag when watching movies. Any suggestions on this?

Here are the errors my Mac reported:
1) Incorrect number of file links
2) Orphaned file inode (id=14274336)
