I used to think a touchscreen laptop was a gimmick...until I used one. I had one for work that ran Windows 10/11. It was very, very useful and Apple will sell a ton of them
How was it useful?

Am I the only one that doesn’t care about a touchscreen MBP? I have an iPad Pro w Magic Keyboard and when I have the keyboard attached I rarely touch the screen

I've used my 12.9 iPad Pro as a hybrid for the last 5 years. I find that I use it as either a laptop or a tablet, but not usually both at the same time. When I use it as a laptop (with keyboard and mouse) I don't like having to reach to interact with the screen and then go back to find the mouse. I honestly can't say how often this occurs, but its not too often for my workflow.
I love using the iPad as a laptop to get work done and I love using it as a tablet, but it feels clunky to try and mix those - which seems to be what the MacBook with a touchscreen will be. That's my 2 cents.
They should have gone further/intuitive into making the iPad (esp. mini) as a companion screen that applications optimized for it.

One of my company laptops is a HP zbook something something, with a touch screen. From an angle you can see it's not flat. I have used the touch screen exactly once. Touchscreens on laptops are silly.

Now if the touchpad on that HP (which is more expensive than my MacBook Pro 16") would actually work properly, I might even use the damned thing. Still a **** machine for other reasons though. It doesn't charge when connected to most screens.

This has always been the case. Mac Studio never got an M3 Max, so we were stuck with the M2 Max/M2 Ultra until the M4 Max/M3 Ultra was released. And the Ultra being M3 instead of M4. I am just baffled at Apple's treatment to their desktops.

Not always the case, they went from M1 to M2 at the same time frame as the other computers. Then for who knows what reason they ditched the M3, with people even on here falsely claiming it was because the M3 lacked the connection to make it an Ultra chip, and they went M4 Max and M3 Ultra, again no idea why they did it.. So I don't think you can say it has always been the case at all, but Apples roadmap for the Studios SOC is just totally screwed up it seems and makes zero sense.

Yeah, I was thinking that myself just now. I hardly ever even touch the screen of my iPad Pro.

This is such a dumb claim to make when for the better part of 2 years the big story has been "when are all these features Apple announced for Apple Intelligence actually going to come out?".
We are discussing the MacBook not Siri.

yes we are aware that Apple has postponed Siri - but thats one of a very few examples of genuine postponement when something has been announced and delayed rather than people making up hardware claims and then saying they are postponed which is what we are discussing here and my comment pertained to.

Since it is something more bad about mac desktops I guess it is true. If Apple just had been a little agile they would have been selling desktops to the llm crowd at premium prices. Instead you can not even get hold of the current gen atm. Well well, par for the course…

Good. I do not have interest in a touch screen laptop, nor will I ever, in perpetuity. If they EVER make it a mandatory feature then that model is dead to me.
So, you are saying you won’t touch it, ever. 😊
Actually, even if you bought a mandatory feature one, no one can force you touch to tap the screen. 😊

Because they sell 50x more laptops than desktops.

That's exactly why it should not be a problem for Apple to sell one less MacBook Pro for a Studio, instead of pissing their Pro customers. Also, for each Studio they sell, they will also gain from a keyboard, mouse and even an Apple Display.

To your last point, people complain because they want to be seen by other people, complaining is an effective way of getting attention. Unlikely that Apple will change their HW plans or pricing regardless of what people in this thread have to say about this rumored change.
If everyone believed their words had no power, no one would speak up and nothing would ever change.

More power to those who speak up, whether or not it's moot.

If they held off and did a M6 release at 3-4 months beyond that they'd probably wind up doing another disappointing release with the M6 Max in the lower tier Studio and obsolete chip architecture in the Ultra like they did with the M4/M3. That'd upset a lot of people again who assume that the top-tier most expensive machine should have the best-possible chip and capabilities.
True. Although the alternative would be to release those versions nearly simultaneously.

The global memory chip shortage may result in the next MacBook Pro and Mac Studio models launching later than expected, according to the latest rumor.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has repeatedly stated that 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a touch screen are slated to launch in late 2026 to early 2027. In his Power On newsletter today, though, he said to be prepared for the laptops to potentially arrive towards the end of that timeframe due to the chip shortage.

In other words, early 2027 is now more likely than late 2026.

Gurman previously expected a new Mac Studio to launch around the middle of 2026, which pointed towards an announcement around WWDC 2026 in June. However, in his newsletter today, he wrote that sources within Apple believe that the next Mac Studio models will not ship until around October this year as a result of the shortage.

Touch-screen support will be part of a major refresh planned for the high-end MacBook Pro models, with other rumored features including M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, an OLED display, a Dynamic Island, and a thinner design. The laptops might have MacBook Ultra branding, and macOS 27 will offer a touch-friendly interface.

For the Mac Studio, the key change will be M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. The current model has mismatched M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, as Apple never introduced an M4 Ultra chip. No major design changes are expected for the desktop computer.

All in all, expect a Mac Studio refresh around October this year, followed by MacBook Pro models with a touch screen by the end of January 2027.

For those of you who are on board with a touchscreen Macbook Pro, open your Macbook and start tapping the screen.
Does that feel "normal" or comfortable to you? Be honest.
The only way a touchscreen would work on a Macbook is to have the Macbook as a 2 in 1 configuration. Then you end up with an iPad with a keyboard and more ports with no MacOS.
That scenario doesn't scream premium/pro whatsoever.

At work I actively, but often futilely, try to prevent people from jabbing their greasy fingers against my MBP screen. I'm forced to clean it regularly. Having them rub their fingers all over my beautiful display and have it respond to the Bad Touch is the stuff of nightmares. Computer displays are for looking, not for touching.

My personal MBP's screen, on the other hand, is pristine. A periodic dusting is the most it requires. Although I did have a close call few months back when I was showing my father something and he started reaching for the display, "Is this a touch screen?" "NOOOO!"

Hoping Ternus and Srouji feel less bounded to shareholders, although I imagine there's no room for revolutionary leaders like Jobs in our current late-stage capitalist economy.

Do you think that's a lot of money? I used to own VFX for TV and film, but that's a hard industry with a race to the bottom, unfortunately. So I started a company that makes internal custom use 3d visualisation software for Car companies. Currently 7 car companies use it. Apple vision implementation is new this year. We were on Meta but recent VisionOS changes ( and the M5 Chip ) means we can use Apple Vision. Licences (3 years) have been £250K just for Vision addon, the whole product is $18m over the past 4 years.

A colleague has made a BIM application for architects and builders for Apple Vision - He's hitting $120m... and it's him a small coding team in India. The key at the moment is custom workflows / solutions for clients, not low price high volume.
Yes yes. I’m sure you are the businessman. (That has time lurking in some rumor site.)

Doesn't make sense to me to have touchscreen Mac unless you can detach the screen and use it like an iPad. Which is what my old work MS Surface laptop used to do, except the hinge was flakey, and I didn't need that capability in my work machine, so I never used it. I have both a Mac and an iPad for personal use - would be nice if one device could fulfill both form factors.

Presumably it's a feature that can be turned off, like on a Windows PC. "Dead to me" sounds a bit hyperbolic...
