Why you dont do the clean install on an external drive, it does not take that much time if you have a (free) external drive.

kwfl, I applaud you for your systematic approach in solving this sleep issue. :)

I think your approach is something that many of us should emulate and AFAIK, this is probably the best way to pinpoint the cause of the sleep issue (hard or software) albeit it's a little troublesome and tedious.

Well done!

Pleased to hear that.

i just did a clean install on my internal drive. It still won't auto-sleep and hard drives spin down when they shouldn't. :(
I hope that the 10.5.3 update fixes it.

Thanks Kwfl. This aside from the current topic, How hot does your enclosure bottom get? Mines at 36 C, and its pretty warm. J/W.

34 on idle. this is just the one befoe penryn. To be honest, as much as i admire the MBP, i find the 24" iMac better because of the screen size when i sitt on the desk. It also gives better speeds. However that does not change my attitude againt the MBP.

I just solve the problems and let it sleep. It has been asleep for 2 days now. Great thanks to whomever made these machines.

I did another SMC reset and it seems like it did the job. My MBP auto-sleeps now.

I did the same thing and it worked for me too. My first solution was to reinstall the whole machine, but it did not help a thing, then i tried the SMC reset for the first time a week ago but with no luck.
After that i searched the web for finding new solutions, but here yesterday i thought that i for the fun of it would try the SMC reset again, and it worked, my Mac Book Pro auto sleeps again.:)

This is my computer:

2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Bought June 2008

Current OS:
OS X 10.5.6

I hope this works for all.

My 2.4 MBP (purchased refurb in Dec. of 07) refuses to autosleep; I had it in for repair in December with no success. The MLB was replaced at that time. I just sent it in last night for another repair. We'll see how that goes.

My machine has never correctly auto-slept. It will sleep via the menu and closing the lid, but not via the timer. Doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not; the battery will just die or the machine will stay running all night.

Mac Pro will not Sleep on it's own!

I have read this thread and called support three times now and have done some resets of powermanagement.plist and the command + Option + P key when it reboots and all this stuff...

The machine just does not sleep.

Even my settings under Power Management would change on their own. I would set it to 1 minute so I could test it and when I go back in it changes itself to 26 minutes...and sometimes 10 minutes! It's like there is a virus or some seriously bad code...I don't know...

SOmetimes the machine will sleep after 5 minutes have passed if nothing is running.

If I have Firefox running with 10 websites in their own tabs then it seems to refuse to sleep. From the Windows world, if I do not touch my mouse or keyboard the machine sleeps even if I have web pages open in Firefox or Chrome or IE.

I already spent a good 100 hours setting up this machine and installing Sun's VirtualBox so I could run WIndows XP and some apps like Office 2007 for WIndows and OneNote because Office for the Mac is not as full featured especially for Contacts and I can't find a good replacement for OneNote so I had to capitulate and install it. VirtualBox is really good and FREE by the way and although had to read 200 pages of the 250 page manual to configure it because I did not know a thing about it...it works awesome!

But, I can't figure out wh¥*the machine will not sleep on it's own!

I'm trying to save electricity and the Mac Pro is NOT being friendly to the environment AT ALL and it is VERY frustrating!

And support does not know why at all...

I was hoping this thread would help me however support tried these options.

My machine was a refurbished Mac Pro and hoping that has nothing to do with the price of eggs...
