Apple continuously staggering M releases keeps me from upgrading as often as I might. I purchsed an M1 mini, and everytime I keep considering something more powerful (MB Pro or Studio) I hesitate.
You’ve reached the days of “Huh! The machine I have is perfectly suitable for what I need, guess I can save some money!” which are days many are still trying to get to. Good on you!

Considering the most powerful CPU is only available in the iPad, obviously buyers are hesitant to purchase any Apple computer until they are on par.

TouchBar was less popular than the iPhone mini. I doubt either will make a come back.
The biggest issue with iPhone mini was the name. I've been through a conversation a few times where the person assured me they were definitely not interested in a "mini" iPhone and only because I pushed the idea did they end up holding an iPhone mini, surprised of its size. Mini is 5.4" and larger a phone than most people assume by its name. Apple should offer a 5.6" version and drop the "mini" name. Heck, Apple should offer 5.6" non-pro and pro models, giving both kinds of users the option of a small-er phone.

Hence why Apple released the 8GB MacBook Pro M3. It's for users like yourself. You get the MacBook Pro (in name only) without the Pro part (you get 8GB memory and a non-Pro/non-Max M3 chip) 🤣
You are right. But with the better screen and a few other goodies (batterie etc.) Isn‘t this the hole purpose of this SKU.

I have a Mini, and love it, but I’m not sure I agree. Unfortunately, more and more it is obvious to me that an app or website has been optimized for a larger screen than mine. I like holding the mini, but it’s time for me to get a bigger screen (I’ll probably hold out for next year though).

I used to have MBP's even though I really didn't need the Pro part. But these days with the new MacBook Air's and the small bezel and the M chips, they're fitting the bill for my needs well.

If I were into A/V production, I am sure the MBP would be the direction I would go.
With the update to the Air hardware (I preferred the wedge), I may be going Pro next time, just for the better screen. Not much difference now in weight anyway. But, my noise-OCD really likes fanless, so maybe not…

Self-fulfilling prophecy by naming it wrong and then devs don't focus on it for it got discontinued as it wasn't selling as it was named wrong.

Had this conversation a few times with women. They were quite surprised and figured the mini would be much smaller. They only tried the mini because I pushed the topic. The name is wrong. Like I say, Apple could even go 5.6" by offering some kind of smaller than massive option. A few mini sales out there are because of me.

And yes, I am talking about the iPhone, haha.

I hope this will bring us to an annual upgrade cycle. A lot of people would like that. Like the iPhone. October, Spring, WWDC.

Let's put some of those M4 Pro's and Max's into the next iMac and give them a nice 28" and 32" Tandem OLED display, and Apple can have what's in my wallet...till then, Tim & Co. have nothing I wish to purchase. LOL :)

Odds are what's in your wallet wouldn't cover the cost of a large screen 5k/6K tandem OLED iMac with Pro or Max variant chip. That's going to be in Pro Display XDR/Mac Pro pricing territory.

Are you complaining your chip is too fast?
Nope. It could be faster for various things eg. software H265 encoding. I have an older Intel iMac for that, but it has ongoing sleep/wake issues that affect my external RAID and HDD's that prevent me from counting on it staying reliable.

Is the M1 good enough? Yes, but with an aging crutch.

As someone who normally upgrades every 3-5 years, I'm holding off for at least 2 more years. My M1 Pro does all that I need and has no clear slowdowns.
That’s what results from having a chip vendor that doesn’t have a business requirement to ensure that there are very poor performing choices as the base solution. They can provide a low end solution that has close to the same single-core speed as their highest end solutions such that, for most tasks, there won’t be a huge difference. That’s something that we will NEVER see from Intel or AMD.

This is what I’ve been saying since the M1. The *lowest* performing Apple Silicon Mac raises the bar so high that many people can easily live with a MBA where they had to go with a Pro previously.

So if they are going to release MacBook Pros in October does that mean that the Mini and iMac updates will be delayed until Spring? Or do they get pushed until WWDC and debut alongside the upgraded Studio? Crap, I really want a Mini.

DANG IT! Just got my M3 Pro last month.

Time to sell it and consume the NEW THING.

I'm still using an M1 Max Macbook Pro 16 here -- and I haven't felt like it's lacking in speed/performance in any measurable respect.

I'd really like to try out a new M4 Max version and see if it felt any faster to me in real-world use. But overall, I'm treating this purchase like I did with my Mac Pro towers in the past.... Paid a lot to spec one out with more RAM and disk space with a plan it would get me by for at least 5-6 years, to justify its up-front cost.

Just curious to core count. my i9 MBP is going on 5 years old. Kind of replacement time.
I already replaced one of those with the M1 Max I still use now. That's a pretty cool machine though, in the sense it's the absolute fastest Mac laptop ever released with an Intel processor. Outdated now? Obviously -- yet feels like one of the Macs that will be a "collectible" in years to come, and "the one to have" for special situations where you need the Intel compatibility (like heavy users of Windows on Mac).

Last year, Apple released the iMac at the same event as the MacBook Pro. I would suspect this year’s October release will be similar, with the Mac mini & iMac released along with the MacBook Pro.

I sure hope so.
