Rumor: Quad core i7's for 15/17 inch models. 6950m graphics.

This user posted the same thing on MacRumors (MBP Forum). The post, however, disappeared why he was offline - I checked his profile. It was not moved to wasteland, and it was not merged with another thread. Is it possible MacRumors got a cease and desist?

I'd call the guy a troll - but he has been a member here for a few years and on HardForum for over 5. A quick look at his posts and I don't think he seems like the troll type. The specs sound ridiculous - but I think they could be possible if Apple removes the optical drives on the 15/17, uses the new battery technology, and increases airflow.

Thoughts?

My thoughts:
PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE.

This post was yesterday and I mean the guy got everything we think we know about the low end 13" right, right?

Be in the high end 13" for the optical drive, be in the high end 13" for the optical drive, be in the high end 13" for the optical drive, be in the high end 13" for the optical drive...

Apple forces me to buy a vaio with windows 7 :(

I'm confused as to what you want.

If this turns out to be true, I would be very surprised, don't know if positively or negatively though... I want that SSD drive for the OS and no SuperDrive!

And weren't the quad-sandy bridge recalled because of the flaw?

No CPU were ever recalled only the chipset for which the sandy bridge CPUs use. Cougar point to be exact.

Btw nice link on the amd 6950 sounds too good to be true though.

If this proves to be true, it will be the prefect excuse for Apple not to present any re-design or significant change in the line. A much better GPU and minor spec bump is enough to justify this update.

BTW why is the store not down yet?

Yes, I believe he did get the 13" info correct - but that was leaked yesterday/Wednesday morning. His post was Wednesday night.

Apparently Apple won't announce them until after Intel's press conference tomorrow announcing Light peak / Thunder bolt.

Ah, got it now.

Intel's event will be at 1:00 pm Eastern, so I bet on store going down at 10:00 am and well... be back online at 8 pm : )

"hey, my new laptop has TB!"

Uh, keep it away from me lol.

Doc Holliday died of tuberculosis using his MacBook Pro at the OK Corral shootout.

His shotgun was named ThunderBolt.

:p

Damn. I got really excited. He's information would gain a lot of credibility (at least for me) if he claimed this before the low end specs were leaked.

From what I'm hearing on this thread, the AMDs aren't going to be big. That's why I want a quad core; anytime someone says they have a quad core laptop, I know they mean business. I want to mean business too!

General question for those who know about graphics cards. Will the AMD in the maxed out, as much as money can buy 17" be better than my current 9600m GT? I'm on core 2 duo 15" 3.06GHz.

Also, as I said in another thread, why is it okay for Apple to release a product that isn't even as fast as something from 2 years ago and still charge more than anyone else for it?

The reason is simple IMHO. It is because Apple can charge for the amount they do & yet their MBPs are selling like hotcakes! :p Didn't you see that they've been very successful with their Mac sales, breaking records after records, especially these past 1-2 years? :D

Wow, AMD GPUs? I guess Apple really doesn't want me as a customer again

AMD makes great CPUs, especially when "bang for the buck" is taken into account. But they inherited ATI's TERRIBLE driver support. It's not as bad as Intel's driver support, but its not anywhere near as good as nvidia's.

AMD/the former ATi has had a hard time shaking this own fairy tail. A couple years ago ATi had basically had a horrible string of drivers surrounding certain cards that was basically a "blow drier". This was the last time I think ATi tried a "big die" strategy.

Today is however a COMPLETELY different story. One of the first things AMD did was get the driver team up to snuff. Crossfire in terms of scaling is actually now consistently better than SLI. In addition, as a 5870 owner, I have never had ANY issues what so ever with the drivers and see consistent performance increases every time new drivers come out. There are NO issues with AMD gpu drivers. Catalyst works absolutely beautifully these days. They are on par if not better than nVidia. Seriously.

Now as far was what GPU they might use. I think it would probably be the 6530m. About the same TDP as the current GT 330m.. it would roughly be about a 30% boost over the current generation too. Who knows, Apple could go for a slightly slower lower power option too.

The Intel GMA is only roughly on par with the 320m though... hmmm.

I like Light Peak better than Thunderbolt.

Same. Thunderbolt sounds like some upcoming Marvel comics character.

Disagree. I think Thunderbolt is a Tramps favourite brand of cider.

Haha, I think he wants the option to remove the disk drive and stick one of these bad boys in.

Ah ok. I was worried that I was witnessing the first to be driven crazy by Apple rumors.

On a separate note, it's normal behavior to be up at 3 AM posting about products that may not even exist with a Cal test in the morning, right?

Right haha, but for me it's only two and the test is solid mechanics. :p

That kind of configuration would require TWICE the current power needs of the current range. Impossible. Unless apple has some awesome battery tech two maintain the current 10 hour status quo...
