also do you get to keep that box they use to ship your laptop? I can't imagine them paying to have the box shipped back or does dhl just take the laptop out and hand it to you?

Wow I called on monday 11th, shipped it on tuesday the 12th and today the 13th they just emailed and said it would be here tomorrow(thursday) the 14th, well they said allow for 2 days for delivery but the fed ex tracking number says it will be here tomorrow by 10:30 am. That is crazy fast turn around. I was getting worried having read some of the posts saying weeks of waiting.

~160 Apple stores x ~5 Genuises per store (a guess) = ~800 Geniuses

How hard is it for Apple to get them all on the same page?

I had the same conversation today, but the Genius at my store said that they'd replace JUST the heatsink.

If it's a newly designed MLB and/or heatsink, I can understand a delay in replacement (of thousands of units); surely there can be no such delay if it's a matter of tape, right? And yes, why can't Apple help everyone out by getting their geniuses all in a row (same page)?

nope dhl picked it up and fed ex air is delivering it That is some fast service and I thank apple for it. Still upset about a problem in the first place but these things do happen.

The original delivery was fed ex also by the same method(expedited air) even though I chose the regular shipping option.

Sent the Macbook off, only after...

Okay, here’s my tale…so far: On Monday I drove two hours to the nearest Apple store (Charlotte, NC) to have a Genius work his/her magic. Upon arriving at the “Genius” Bar, I was pleased to meet another MacBook owner (of the fairer sex) who was turning her computer in for the same RSS issue. Almost immediately upon hearing about her problem the Genius replaced her MacBook on the spot, no questions asked (no she didn’t have the AppleCare extended warranty). Moments later, the same Genius told me I would have to ship my Mac off to the repair depot because it was not purchased at an Apple store (I had mine upgraded to the 100 GB hard drive). After a few moments of bickering, I conceded to shipping the worthless computer off. Has anyone else had the experience of having their Apple Store purchased computers replaced on site that easily, or did her flirting and hair twirling work? I told him it made no sense that I watched her get her unit replaced for the EXACT SAME issue, but because mine was a custom order he couldn’t do the same. To make matters worse, they swapped her hard drive from the bad Mac to the new one too! I suggested that was all that needed to be done with my unit as well, but it did no good. At any rate, tomorrow I’m ordering a ThinkPad. I’ve had two Macs and they’ve both had issues out of the box. I figured one was a fluke, but two seem like a pretty sustained Apple QC problem. Good luck to all you other MacBook owners… you’ll need it.

MACBOOK RANDOM SHUTDOWN SYNDROME

As previously stated, I bought two macbook recently and both of them have been randomly shutting down. I am very disappointed. Apple won't replace or reimbourse me. I understand from this thread that I am not the only one dealing with this problem.
How many are we ?
If you have this problem with your macbook or macbookpro , can you please send me an email at macbookproblem@mac.com with the complete serial number of your computer, model , date of purchase, outcome and as much information as you want. Let me know if you want me to publish your email in the list.

I plan on publishing weekly stats about number of computer affected. I may contact you by email if there is any info to pass on.

any suggestions welcome.

I had a powerbook 12' before and never had so much problem with a mac before.

A lot of users are reporting problems even after repair.

ONE ADVICE: CALL APPLE AND REPORT THE PROBLEM AS SOON AS RANDOM SHUTDOWN ARE NOTED.

Time for action ?

Thanks

That sounds right. Apple's always handled CTO units differently, although maybe if you were dressed in drag, ... ;)

Sounds like you're doing the work that http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com/ is already doing. They have 548 folks on their list.

What's to be done, other than sending your MacBook to Apple for repair?
http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0908macmini.html

Apple recently notified service providers that customers who report experiencing the random shut-down problem should submit their systems for evaluation and that Apple will replace the faulty parts in systems deemed affected by the flaw. Parts affected by the issue are said to include the logic board and heatsink.

Affected MacBooks span the serial number range 4H617-4H635. Apple expects repairs on affected MacBooks to begin early next week.

Lucky you (fedex). DHL lost mine. I'd thought that Apple ONLY uses DHL.
I thought so too, but with the potential volume of MacBooks that they might be dealing with (based off of the Think Secret article above), perhaps they're using other repair depots and carriers (FedEx?) than they normally do.

I had to send in my last Mac notebook (the last generation "hi-res" PowerBook) twice for repair. Both times were via DHL both ways. First repair took 48 hours, second repair took 4 days (because a part was on backorder). The Apple folks were awesome to deal with on both occasions. I don't expect my MacBook repair to be any different. :)

Sorry, just noticed that.

Can you verify when the users who've reported problems even after repair had their units repaired?

I'm very curious if their units were repaired before Apple notified its service providers last week.

To go off-topic a bit: is there any clarification does Apple replace the wristpad on early "gets dirty too easily" -models? My MB is suffering from that and RSS and I thought it would be nice to get both fixed at the same time.

Looks like I'll wait a while with my Macbook before handing it over to get repaired, it will take a while before the parts hit Finland. (Altough I'm hoping for a new unit)

I haven't had a shutdown problem, but sometimes when I put the Macbook back in my messenger bag when walking around school, when it's still on, the screen just stays black when I open it up again. I didn't wait for more than a few minutes before re-starting it, but this shouldn't be happening, should it? The fan was blowing like crazy the whole time, as well. It's happened 2 or 3 times.

That's what I just did. The Genius said both the case and the RSS would be fixed...

MacBook heat sink not logic board

I brought my Macbook to Apple Store on 9/5. I got an email today that it is the heat sink that needs to be replaced, and they expect to have the part on 9/18. However, I only got the email about 2 hours after the Apple store gave me a brand new MacBook - the one in for repair was just shy of 90 days old.

Powerbook G4 Shutdown

I've had problems with random shutdown on a Powerbook G4. It has happened about a half dozen times in the last year. I walk away from the computer and it blacks-out completely in just a few minutes. I have to hold the power button down for several seconds before it reboots and starts. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the battery and overheating. It does run hot. Mine was one of the recalls. I'm waiting for the new battery!

I think I'm starting to get RSS. It's happened twice, and this latest time it shut down, and I powered it up, and it shut back down within 2 seconds of my pressing the power button. It did it again, but the third time it worked fine.

I'm thinking of taking it to the Apple store. Will I need to have the original RAM in it?

mine's going back in a second time. Hey, it can go back as many times as Apple wants. I'm not the one paying for shipping/parts/labor.

Though doing without a computer for a week when you paid for it is unexcusable. First time was 3 days, lets hope this second repair for the Macbook will be a success. Those on the Apple Support forums say that Apple has new spec logic boards in that reroute the shorting out thermal sensor away from the heat sink. I'll just have to wait and see if this "rumor" is true.

I sent mine off today. I hope it doen't take more than 3 days to fix. I've had RSS for over a month now and haven't been able to send it in because of work. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well my Macbook has succumbed to the RSS as well. :(
The phone rep was quite nice, and when I mentioned the RSS issue and "the whine" he said I would be getting a new logic board and heatsink. Hopefully that fixes things.

It is also being sent off to get the "staining" issue fixed, along with a trackpad button that is quite loud when clicked on the left side.

I've loved my Macbook so far, but this puts a major damper on it. Pretty bad that my 4 year old TiPB that has been ran through the ringer, has never had an issue and is rock solid to this date.

Oh well, chalk another user up for the RSS...

Edit: BTW the phone rep also quoted me 5-7 business days for the repair to be complete, so we will see about that! The DHL box arrived today, so off mine goes tomorrow.

So, is it reasonable to assume this random-shutdown bug is present in the recently assembled MB? It seems there are more problems with MBP/MB compared to PPC Mac (iBook and PB). I have been roaming various Mac forums since 2001 when I purchased my first Mac which was 15" Ti PB with the first version of OS X and have not seen so many problem threads until MBP/MB started flooding the market.

Thanks for the info. I will make sure I won't buy any MB prior to Week 36 as the problem MB are from Week 17 to Week 35. There is no point taking a chance on this by getting the pre-Week 36 model. Even though Apple may fix this under warranty, I just feel the repaired Mac is not the same as new because of the warped casing, scratches, and all other cosmetic damages associated with the repair.
