Just got my Macbook back a day ago (after its second repair for RSS). All they replaced was the heatsink and it has been running fine for 36 hours now.

my third repair in a month

My macbook randomly shuts down as well. This will be the third time in a month that i will have to send my computer away to get fixed. Extremely frusterating. I told mac customer service that this was unaccaptable and that they need to just give me a new computer (and an upgrade for the inconvience). He said I had to wait until my 4th crash to talk about replacement. That is rediculous. Talk about bad customer service. I thought 3 repairs was bad, they want me to wait for a 4th. frusterated.

Last thursday when I called to get it refixed the guy promised it would be back to me on monday and here it is going on friday and I still won't have it back.

You must have spoken to the same rep I got. When I called last Friday to set up the repair for RSD, the rep actually said "You'll have your computer back by next Thursday. It will actually spend more time with the freight company than with Apple". I have since found that to be completely untrue. I shipped it out Monday and it has been sitting "REPAIR IN PROGRESS" since Tuesday morning. When I spoke with Apple yesterday the rep I talked to said that she can't understand why someone would tell me that short of a turnaround, since it takes a minimum of 5 to 7 days for testing.

Yes, she "Escalated" mine too. Not that it matters...

I've got half a mind to go down and buy a white 1.83 for $1099, throw in my 100gb drive (with all my data), use it until I get my BlackBook back and then return it (paying the re-stocking fee).

I haven't read this entire 7 page thread, but I'll just add my 2 cents:

Yes, my Blackbook shut down randomly. I suspected it was heat related, but it really was more likely to be CPU Intensiveness related (which is frequently, but not always heat).

After several calls to Applecare, I eventually sent it in. I'd advise EVERYONE to send it in before the 90 days are up (or maybe a year for hardware?)

Here's the rule:
- It shuts down? Send it in.

Just got mine back two hours ago. They only replaced the heatsink, not the logic board and the heatsink. Jury is still out, but no RSDs so far. It was RSDing like crazy when I sent it in. w00t

i would do that too if i have the money. parted with it on monday, the tech said they have a queue to test for 1-2 weeks (i didn't want to ask why we couldn't all just sign up and come in when its our turn) then it should be a quick turn around because we all know they are going to dump a new heat sink, logic board and probably top bezel on it right? apple must be shipping these 'fixit' packs like there is no tomorrow to all the fixing companies!

The repairs take a couple hours. However, many people have been told they are "waiting for parts" at various repair centers. That would be the most likely cause of it sitting for a few days.

i dont mean to start an argument here, but i cant resist asking. why is it that people are so hateful of windows and its crashing errors, and act like macs are on such a higher level, when they can obviously have problems too. sure windows has its fair share, but you also hear more about it because there are simply far more users.

i think OS X is very stable and wonderful to work with, but lets not be blind :D

anyway, i am glad to hear they are close to a solution to this. it must be so frustrating!

Windows and Mac OS X aside, this issue cant be compared to Windows, since any issue people have with windows is a SOFTWARE issue, not hardware. Macs are great, but when this glitch comes along people always start going on about Windows. why?? Windows makes software first and foremost. I've never seen a Microsoft-built laptop computer. I agree with the heatsink theory, and it would explain why the issue takes a long time to manifest itself. im still wondering what the actual fix is with these heatsinks. if you ask me, considering what ive seen people do to fix their own problem, simply adding protection to the sensitive cables over the heatsink works best. why not just add a guard between the heatsink and the cables instead of just the superthin layer of insulation? but its still a mystery to me, and not for hell could i get a genius to really get into the subject.

in the warranty it says "reasonable" amount of repair attempts. which is funny since reasonable can be any arbitrary amount of attempts. you can argue that more than once us unreasonable, and since theres no set number in the warranty booklet that comes with your macbook, you can demand a new one regardless of what they say. im wary about getting a replacement should my repaired blackbook go on the fritz again, because i run the risk of getting a replacement with the same inherent defect.

I called today and the representative called the repair center to check on the progress. They said they're not waiting on any parts yet it's still going to be a week and a half to two weeks before I get my computer back. Even a repair center in India could get it to me that fast. They told me they upgraded my status to business critical. I can't imagine how long it would be if it wasn't.

5-7 days for regular status
5-7 days for upgraded status
5-7 days for priority status
5-7 days for business critical status
5-7 days for super critical, forced-to-go-out-of-business status:eek:

(i.e. when you get it back)

Gee, if they sue Apple like they sued Dell, then they get a lot of money and we'll get an extra year warranty. Woo hoo.

Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, with co-counsel, represents owners of the Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook computer in a class action lawsuit against Dell, Inc.

On September 13, 2006, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California issued an order preliminarily approving a settlement granting relief to a class consisting of all individuals and entities in the United States who own or have owned a Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook computer.

By the end of September 2006, members of the class should receive an official notice explaining the exact terms of the settlement. These terms are subject to final approval by the Court. In general terms, the settlement includes an extended one-year limited warranty for the following "Qualifying Repairs"

I don't really see why a lawsuit would be necessary, they aren't refusing to fix the problem(Though they are taking a while in my case at least)

And uniike Dell, they're not making their customers pay any money to get the repairs done. I'm curious about what the outcome of a class action action lawsuit against Apple would be.

I got mine back on Thursday. No random shutdowns since. They replaced the heatsink but not the logic board. I also had the yellowing problem and they seem to have replaced the entire keyboard area. Typing on it now feels different, the trackpad feels different too.

Not happy that it happen but if I don't get anymore random shutdowns I will be.

does the typing feel better or worse? I liked the keyboard feel before. And whats different about the trackpad?

they finished the work on it this morning I guess, it says return pending, the guy on the phone thursday told me the repair place didn't work on saturdays.

maybe overtime in order to get everyone's computer back?

I'm pretty pissed - especially since I sold my backup mac over the summer.

when the 90 days are up they just transfer you to a Product Specalist and he takes down your info and ships out a box. No PMU/PRAM/Reinstall non-sense.

Exact same here, except got mine back Friday. Didn't get a new logic board like most, just a new heatsink and stuff for the yellowing on mine.

My keyboard is the same keyboard that it orig had, it's just the area around the keyboard and screen and the trackpad that were replaced. New color is slightly darker. As long as it doesn't yellow/stays clean, I'll be happy.

my 90 days was up but the first person I talked to still handled it. Probably really depends on who you talk to when you call. He did mention the 90 days being up but then kept going with the call. I really don't even understand what that 90 days is about. If I have a hardware problem thats covered how am I supposed to get if fixed other than calling in?(nearest apple store 3 hours away) I understand them not wanting to waste man power on phone calls after 90 days for user created problems but still.

I had that 90 day problem with my PowerBook. I was calling with an obviously hardware related issue (after my 90 days was up). The AppleCare rep was like "well, this call may be billable since you're out of your 90 days", but after he heard that it was definately hardware related, he didn't mention it any more and the call went like any other time I called before my 90 days was up.
