Here, here! Please, Mr. Jobs. Give those of us who actaully want (have) to carry a computer around all the time, and even use it on an airplane when the guy in front of us has his seat reclined, a MacBook Pro that is SMALL!!!! Is Steve trying to compensate for something of his that's too small with all these honking, giant "laptops" (if you dare call them that)?
Welcome to the Forums. Please take some time and inform yourself by reading the forum rules. Typically double posting (two or more posts in a row with the same content) is frowned upon.

The size issue has been beaten to death. A certain consumer segment wants a smaller laptop with all the goodies in it, but still wants a decent price. Well, with faster CPUs, faster HDs, etc., the size comes at a price. The MB is wonderful for the size/features, especially when considering price. There are already several threads about people wanting a sub-MB sized laptop. Please post there.

The 955X and 975X are system chipsets, not graphics chips. The GMA950 is the newest and best graphics chip currently sold by Intel.
Oh I guess I misread that. BTW which one is the MB using the 975X or 955X?

I dunno if this could be answered but could there be a way to get the MB to use more ram for the integrated gfx? I have done this before many years back on a Compaq with 8mb of integrated gfx memory to 16(at the time 64mb was like max out on the market and it was still fairly new). I dunno if there any one And I know for some gfx like the ATI 9600 you can enable pipelines that were disabled which is like two. Can that same thing be done to a intergrated chip?

MacBook Uses G950. Sorry about all the dups. I wasn't getting a return to the thread and didn't know they were being posted each time I tried to return to the thread.
I think he was asking which system chipset the MacBooks use, and I believe it's a variant of the 945 Express like the MacBook Pro. The 975X hasn't made it to market yet, last time I checked, and like the 955X is a desktop chipset.

Don't IG Take More From RAM If Needed?

I don't know. But I think I remember a post that said something about IG taking more from RAM if needed when you have it maxed out to 2GB. Someone knows here. We just have to hope they come back to this thread to make that answer. :)

More RAM for Integrated Graphics

Hey,
I've had a chance to have a play around with the new MacBook. One really interesting thing I found is that after installing Boot Camp and Windows XP Pro, Windows seems to be using "up to 128MB RAM" for the integrated graphics. I've downloaded the latest "Intel Graphics Chipset" drivers and there doesn't seem to be an option to manually increase the RAM. I read on the Intel website that Windows will automatically increase the RAM when needed.

Thats great news, because it may mean that Vista will probably run even with the aero interface turned on. Would you mind downloading and running the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta tool and report what it says on the macbook. Download the advisor here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65926&clcid=0x409

I know its not very relevant for most mac users, but it could probably work as some kind of preliminar benchmark to what leopard will require for its eye candy...

Thanks

Perhaps The Market For Sub 12" Mobiles Is Very Small

Poor Cybergypsy. :( That is so sad you bought an iBook last month out of sheer impatience? As one who has both the last 12" iBook and the new 13.3" MacBook, I think you speak with more authority than danablix. I have now seen MacBook in person and don't really see how anything smaller would be an improvement. Perhaps The Market For Sub 12" Mobiles Is Very Small Danablix.

Gloss, that is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cute. That would make a good desktop! :D

But make sure you don't, ahem, get too much cat hair inside that MB. I've heard cat hair and excess thermal paste are a toxic combination!

It looks like an iBook to me. Power adapter gives it away.

As for the cat, if that was my pet, it'd be up for adoption that same afternoon!

I don't think there is a way to force it, but I have read the GMA950 will use up to 224MB of memory when needed. I think that might have been on an Intel page. All I can find on Apple's site now is the following note on the MacBook tech specs page:

Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB, resulting in 432MB of system memory available.

Note it says "minimum usage is 80MB," implying usage will increase as demands/total system memory increases.

MacBook Icons!

In case anyone is interested, I posted desktop icons for the white and black MacBook on my website. Please use the direct links below to minimize traffic, as Earthlink will shut down my measly little site once it gets too much traffic. :( (which is why I stuffed the files using Stuffit Deluxe).

Black MacBook Desktop Icon Link

DIRECTIONS FOR REPLACING YOUR HARD DRIVE ICON:

After downloading, unstuff the .sit file (you may need Stuffit Expander). Click the resulting MacBook file to highlight it, then "get info" (command-i) on the file. In the new window that opens, highlight the MacBook graphic in the upper left corner of the window by clicking it once. Copy the image (command-c), then highlight your hard drive icon by clicking it once, Get Info on your hard drive (command-i), click the hard drive icon in the upper left corner of the window, and then paste from the clipboard (command-v). You should have successfully pasted the MacBook image over your hard drive image. You can close the open windows.

If you ever want to restore your original hard drive image, simply get info on your hard drive, click (to highlight) the graphic in the upper left corner, and type command-x to cut the graphic out and the stock hard drive icon will reappear.

I got my MacBook (White) 2.0ghz/1gb/100gb on Monday.

I have to say, it is easily the best computer that I have ever used.

It plays WoW, albeit not quite as fast as my Athlon 64 1.8ghz with a GeForce FX5200. It's definitely playable, and definitely fun.

It is gorgeous. More beautiful than I imagined.

The glossy screen is absolutely great. I thought I would hate it, but actually it's simply sublime. Even outdoors, with some screen angle adjustments, I was able to use it without any real glare.

It is fast as hell. It loads up new web pages faster than I can blink. iPhoto screams. Applications load in two hops.

The keyboard is the best that I have used since the Apple Extended Keyboard II - which means it is the second best keyboard I have ever used. (Nothing will ever beat the Apple Extended Keyboard II, IMO. It was flawless.)

The trackpad is great.

It's light enough for me.

The MagSafe power latch shows a fantastic idea done well. To say nothing of the reduced laptop damage risk, many of my friends' PC laptops have had issues with needing to wiggle power cords to get them to actually make a connection and charge the battery. This appears to totally get rid of that problem.

I have found the perfect computer. Thank you, Apple.

Someone needs to sticky that post. I'll be using these tonight. :)

Well at least that is some good news about the gfx being able to use more ram when needed. Now all we need to do is find a way to enable more pipelines(if possible that is).

Anyone check out the cnet review of the macbook, it was not their best review.
Com: higher-end configurations are much more expensive than similarly configured Windows laptops;
Can they post some example of them please? I am glad cnet is FINALLY reviewing apple prodcuts more fairly now against other competitors. *hopes the next ipod is reviewed fairly like putting no fm radio as a con like you see on every review now*

I used to be an constant CNET reader until they started to give horrible reviews. They'd say things like this laptop has an apple on the top which we don't really enjoy... sorry just gonna have to say its worse than the dell 1705...

Not really but they make dumb ass claims always!!
Since I use a Dell PC because I dont have an Apple yet, my computer always goes to MSN.com once I open IE. Today I found MSN with a title saying "20 must have'em gadgets." I quickly thought might as well see what they have since they have the SanDisk up for a picture and not an iPod.

When I clicked the link it led me straight to an MSN window but with the exact same reviews and style as CNET... so no wonder Apple gets so bad of reviews... MSN is behind CNET (as it seems to me)

There is the link because i'm not to great at explaining what I mean

Remember the inside of the white one is not white. It clearly blue-grey or pewter. :)

They look pretty white to me, although it appears that the surface of the inside is slightly matte, compared to the smooth glossy feel of the outer part of the case, so it does look very, very slightly gray.

Today I saw both the white and black side-by-side. I don't know if anyone here has mentioned it, but the black one has that matte feel on both the outside and inside of the case, whereas the white one is completely smooth on the outside. There was a guy standing next to me who worked in plastics and he said that it's an old joke in plastics to always try to sell things in black because it's cheaper! Anyway, it appears not to be just the color, but the plastic is different. It's still not clear to me why that costs $150, and I ordered a white one.

Another thing: the black one had the same white magsafe connector and cord. You'd think that if they're charging you an extra $150 for black, they'd give you a black cord for it.
