It looks like "verbose" startup mode. Could you have been holding down any keys on startup, such as cmd-v?

    First method:

    Shut down the computer.
Restart and hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys until you hear the second chime.
You may want to practice getting your fingers in the right place first.
If that solution works, you'e done.

Second method (PPC only, won't work on Intels):

    Shut down the computer
Restart and hold down the command + option + o + f keys.
When you see the grey screen telling you to release the keys, do so.
    Now type:
    reset-nvram (press return)
    set-defaults (press return)
    reset-all (press return)

If you have any geeky friends, they could have set verbose mode to the default startup.

There is no open firmware on an Intel Mac.

I copied that from an old text file I had saved with both methods on it (on my G4 nonetheless), and didn't really think about that till you mentioned it. Good eyes
