Macbook Serial number

A macbook I bought boots to disk utility only, serial number is worn off underside, so where do I get the serial from, as there is no 'About this mac' in disk util, having asked this, do I need it in 'My devices' in Apple account, to reinstall LION over the internet, as the reinstallation keeps failing after multiple 'user name or password don't mach' when they are 100% correct? Thanks.

You'll need to reinstall OS X. Also, reformat the drive to get rid of everything, unless the Mac is iCloud locked.
