not hating or anything, but why do we never hear about new macbook pros? always seems to be mainly macbooks :-s

I had observed the same thing!

Before the last Portable overhaul in Feb-08 people were expecting updates for MBP but the only rumors circulating on the net were about MB..... And we all know what happened.... We saw both MB an MBP overhauled in the same go.

If not tomorrow morning, my bet is we will see all three portables overhauled mid-October.

MB-Touch (aka tablet) would be the centre of attraction for the Macworld- coming January.... or else MacWorld will be too boring cause only new thing then would be Snow Leopard.... Which would be major but not as exciting for consumers and media as a entirely new Product.

Price point...

My predictions:
$899 - 2.26Ghz, 1GB, 120GB HD, Combo drive, 13" LED LCD
$1099 - 2.4GHz, 2GB, 160GB, Super drive, 13" LED LCD
$1399 - 2.4GHz, 4GB, 250GB, Super drive, 13" LED LCD

I think they need to get below $1000 with a SuperDrive model if they want to be agressive. Especially if bey come out with Blu-Ray for the other models. (Can you even buy SuperDrive-ish models anymore for other machines?

Hi,

The problem with comparing specs is you usually only get the speed and/or capacity of the hardware. A 5400 RPM 160GB hard drive may cost more if it is a more reliable drive. I would like to think that Apple charges a bit more so as to give the consumer a better quality product rather than a spec'ed speed demon that has incompatible hardware which breaks down sooner.

You can think that all you want – it'll never be true.

The only reason Mac hardware is more expensive than anyone else is that they have some of the highest margins in the business.

Yes, SuperDrives are standard on all PC notebook $500 or greater, with one exception, the $1100 Macbook.

As for Blu-ray, it tends to be $150-$200 extra for a standard PC notebook.

Btw, do you think the X4500 be able to handle games such as starcraft 2 / diablo 3 well?

I never said OS does not matter. I said OS does not matter in a pure price-comparison. There's a BIG difference. If you want competitive prices, you have to have similar specs for similar amounts of money. OS does not matter in a pure specs-comparison. OS matters when you look beyond the specs. And then specs and price-competition don't really matter.

That would be a valid point if you could load OSX on any machine, including the HPs you're referring to.

Since you cannot (not easily, anyway) the OS is most definitely a spec.

It takes a while by boat...

I agree, shipping a month in advance seems a little fishy. If the rumored Oct. 14th date is the unveiling of the new MBs, one would venture to say they would ship out a week or two before that date.

It's not at all fishy. Macbooks are not going to be shipped air freight. They are going to come over in containers on large, plodding ships that take more than a week to cross the Pacific, a week to clear customs in Oakland or Long Beach and then a week to be shipped by truck all over the country -- just like every other piece of consumer electronics.

Not really. The OS is merely a preference, and there's no guarantee of performance gain (unlike hardware). Besides, considering Vista sells for $400+ and Leopard only $120... That only widens the gap.

Vista only sells for $400+ retail. OEMs pay a fraction of that.

Specs are required to run applications, which tend to have similar requirements in both Windows and OS X (with the exception of games, where Windows tends to be better). People need specs to run apps. Unless you can conclusively prove that OS X uses the the same specs as a similar PC running Windows, but uses them more efficiently in an application, then the OS is most definitely not a spec.

am excited

that the macbooks/pros are gonna be updated soon. Eager to convert to Mac from the darkside. I will have to wait till they announce both macbook & the pro to make sure what the price points are. currently, the base MBPs runs $900 more the base MB. Thats too much price point diff (thats where Apple makes great margins)....If base MBPs are around ~$1500, I would rather get the MBP.

Others pls opine.

If you don't care how well they run.

Intel integrated graphics are pitiful, in general. The only reason Apple uses them is to make people buy the MUCH more expensive Macbook Pro. $1000 for a graphics card. The amazing thing? People actually buy into it.

I can't believe they are getting rid of MacBookPros and will have 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch aluminum macbooks.

weird.

I hope Apple adopts low end dedicated graphics if the X4500 cant handle games such as diablo 3 / starcraft 2, sigh. :/ But I doubt they will. :/

Well that hasn't been confirmed, and I highly doubt that will happen, but either way the pros will still exist but will go under the name Macbook only I guess.

everyone is saying oooh it takes this long for them to be shipped over etc etc, but no one knows then they left...

so they really could arrive WHENEVER. as for bluray as much as i'd like to see it, we haven't heard anything about bluray on a mac yet...seems a little optimistic. i like the idea of merging the macbook / pro line together. it makes sense although the very thin aluminum casing sounds a little worrying as the pros seems to dent like foil
