Thinner design, Dynamic island, -> cosmetics, no real value.
M6 is basically given for all devices. If we could get M6 Ultra in Macbook Pro size format, yeah, then it will deserve Ultra. But thermals in thinner design not allow ultra CPU/GPU. Even Max is problematic in 14'.
OLED is nice, if it can last long enough, if power consumption is actually lower, heat generated smaller. Btw. try you iPhone screen at max brightness for short period of time outside..and check temperature and battery levels 😉

5G modem would be nice, but it is not listed? "Ultras" are basically sitting at home or at office whole day, I guess.

Touch is just stupid and will probably never happen for macbooks. Whoever wants touch can buy touch overlay on mac, but usability is only for kios mode devices. Good luck with that.
The only way touch would be of benefit is if it had a 360 degree hinge and an Apple Pencil could work. That ain't happening.

I think the iPhone's Face ID components are too thick to fit into the thin display housing of the current Macbooks. Since rumors imply that Apple may be redesigning these components for the iPhone 18 and the 20th Anniversary iPhone to make them smaller, and maybe to fit under the iPhone display, part of that redesign might be to make them thin enough to fit into a Macbook Ultra display housing.

Hard to say though whether Apple will put Face ID under the Macbook Ultra display, since the displays in iPhones and the upcoming OLED displays for the fall's Macbooks use different technologies, and what works for under-display Face ID components for a smartphone might not work for the upcoming Macbook OLED displays.
Let me show you one simple and brilliant implementation of the camera unit.

But if this is a new model in the line, it begs the question what will the regular Mac book pro continue to be?

device which have the BEST touchpad on the market actually needs a touch screen according to Apple marketing bin team and stink holders…

Dude like what is going on with this world, I think he is broken

None of this makes any sense to me. Even mid range Windows machines have OLED touchscreens these days. Apple is way behind on OLED as usual.

In my mind a MacBook Ultra should be more of a workstation class machine rather than a consumer laptop. Different design, more rugged materials, and a dedicated chip to go with it. Too bad they have already used the W1 name. I’m no designer, but A touchscreen OLED is probably the opposite of what a machine like this should have. Standard Cellular enabling would be a big plus. Maybe even optional satellite capabilities for those work way remote.

Surprised no one else has mentioned this but could the display be detachable and go into touch mode and then back into laptop mode when docked?
IDK. To me that implies a thick screen/cover for battery. At that point, it’s just an iPad with a keyboard case. We already have that.

Agree, we need fat ass MacBook Pro with proper water cooling system. Like for pure enthusiasts …

32gb isn't a big deal, M5 Max MBPs start with 36gb already.

Sounds like another expensive toy, but hey, I'm sure it will sell (probably more than the AVP!).

One small thing iPad on iPad OS. And it will never have MacOS. It is a business over all. You should spend more money if you want )

I don’t mind spending 25 to 2600 on our production laptops with touchscreen I could probably tempted to go to 3200.

Will be interesting for sure

Lighter? Definitely. Thinner? Well, okay, as long as you don’t screw up the keyboard travel and it doesn’t flex or bend. Dynamic Island instead of notch? Okay, but it would be even better if you just kept a 1/4 inch bezel and put the camera lens there instead of being so freakishly bezel resistant. Add a 5G modem? Yes, as an option. Touch screen? Hell no! Stop being stupid like you were with Liquid Ass.

This year or next year?
Also why no face id until now
The lack of FaceID shouldn't be a mystery to anyone. Look at how thick your phone is. Look at how thick the lid of your MBP is. FaceID isn't just a decal. It's a hardware package that has a certain size and, most limitingly, thickness.

True. I just can’t see any up side to trying to use applications traditionally built for keyboard/mouse, like those available in MacOS, on a touch screen. At least iPadOS apps are already built for that type of interaction.

I don’t know if Apple is seriously considering a high-end touchscreen laptop, and if you had asked me 5-8 years ago I would have said “no freaking way they would.” But lately it feels to me like they are grasping at straws and are more willing to throw things out there to see if they stick.

As others have pointed out, there is no point in making this too thin if that would result in thermal throttling that would slow this down to MacBook Air speeds, or to result in the shrinking the battery size. Apple knows this. Likely, the main thickness reduction will come from the screen itself (OLED screens are thinner than LCD screens). The iPad Pro became much thinner when they switched to OLED, although they ended up having to remove the wide camera to make everything fit. I believe there were some changes to the iPad Pro frame structure and cooling system as well.

Since this is aimed at the professional market, I don't think Apple will compromise the performance in any way.

This device isn't for me, but with the Apple Watch Ultra, they proved that there is a demand for more power devices. I think this will sell enough to become part of their regular annual refresh cycle.
