MacBook Updates?!?!?

less money, more of a consumer laptop, not everybody wants to spend 2k on a laptop. the MBP is suppose to be a "pro" model, while the macbook consumer

MB's are cool stuff. I'd totally have one if I didn't need to run FCS... I really like the design and the size. There are soooo many teachers who have them now I'm really jelous.

because the macbook is an inexpensive consumer computer, and the macbook pro is a higher-specced prosumer computer. If Apple are going to have a pro line, they may as well put some pro features in it, like more HDD and RAM capacity, faster CPU, bigger screen, etc. etc.

They need to put the C2D chips in, but they can't afford to bump the speeds on them.

Yeah, Apple should use C2D in the MacBooks, if only because even low-end budget laptops now use them. But they should use the lower end chips, the 1.66-2.0GHz C2D's.

Actually, that brings up an interesting point.

If they replace the 1.83Ghz with 1.66Ghz and 2Ghz with 1.83Ghz, will people choose a FASTER laptop without 64bit support, or a SLOWER laptop with 64bit support? If only the CPU is change and there are no major achitecture changes, will the people who have waited for C2D macbook burst into tears?

they won't replace the 1.83 with a 1.66GHz chip. People still think of numbers; 64 or 32 bit doesn't mean anything to Joe Average.

Yeah, but what about all the consumers that want a consumer based portable with a 15-inch screen. Apple seems to think that they can set a "standard" by making customers buy a 13-inch laptop.

A few people and myself had this conversation at the apple store a few weeks ago. Not everyone needs power, but you can't have too much open on a 13-incher.

I have two 12" powerbooks as my only computers. I find Expose allows the use small screens and lots of apps open. I find that this is one of the huge advantages of OSX over things like XP.

With the bigger screens you're not currently buying a lot more in terms of resolution. (Something I think that might change when we get resolution independence in Leopard, allowing Apple to fit higher res screens).

I think most of the advantage to C2D is the larger cache size. Only the 2GHz chips (which still slot in under the MBP spec to allow the differentiation) and over have this.
