thanks for the insight, but were there any cosmetic flaws with any of the products?

thanks

My iMac came with a small half inch scratch on the screen when i first opened it. It's only noticeable when the computer is off, and while I could have easily returned it for a new one I decided to keep it as it didn't bother me.

My iPod Touch looked brand new; Same for my iPod Mini.

iBook G3's are OK, if you can find one that is known to be working (no logic board problems)

Powerbooks may be a little expensive, as you stated.

I recently bought an iBook G4, and I gotta say, it's one of the best purchases I've made, and you can find them for $350-550

My imac is my first mac, and it has been extremely fast in everything I use it for (Word, Powerpoint, Safari, Itunes, Imovie, Iphoto, Mail, Ichat, Handbrake, Vdrift) but I need a fast computer. Most of the reason I switched from mac to pc was i was tired of 3 minute boots and unresponsive programs. if the ibook is running panther or tiger will it be quick enough to suit my needs, or do you think i will be dissapointed.

thanks

For Tiger, I would recommend at least a 700 MHz G3 with 256 MB of RAM, more if you can afford it.

For something that won't break the bank, a 1.2 GHz 12" or 1.33 GHz 14" iBook G4 with Tiger should be plenty.

re: refurbs.

I recently bought a refurb. and like you I had worries before i bought it.
But when it came it was in perfect condition, no scratches, marks or dents of any kind. I couldn't even find a fingerprint on it. nothing.
It even came in a regular box, albeit with a small 'refurb' sticker in the corner.
If I didn't know it was it refurb I would have assumed it had just rolled out of the factory. (it even smelled new! :))

I'm not saying they are all like this (they obviously aren't), but I am very happy with mine and would definitely buy one again.

This is a great recommendation. If you get a 1.33GHz it'll run leopard pretty well. at least not noticeably slower than tiger. Just be sure to max out the ram.
The later model ibooks still have a lot of life in them (mines running 10.5 very happily), I wouldn't bother with a G3. They are nice...but the G4 ibooks are a LOT better. And will see you all the way through until 10.6 (at least)

That 20" monitor is going to be pretty much useless on an iBook. Mirroring only unless you get screen-spanning doctor and then it's really slow if you want to do anything worthwhile.

The MacBook will run it no worries.

G4s are painfully slow compared to even Core Duos. Sell the iMac and get a refurb Core 2 MacBook Pro.

Ok, i just bought an imac and need a mac laptop for school, and im not sure what to do. 1 I sell my imac on ebay, and cut the loss and add a few hundred to cover the price of the macbook. 2 i take that couple hundred i was going to use to buy the macbook and buy an ibook g3. Also ill mention that i have a 20'' external monitor that i could use with either of the laptops

thanks

Do not buy an iBook!

I made the mistake of buying one. Now I'm dealing with logic board nightmares.

Get rid of your iMac and get a MacBook.

i definitly will next time, but i had the cash and i dont have a paypal, i would have to use my dads, and i wouldnt put a 1400 dollar purchase on a credit card, because thats alot of money to have something go wrong with. Ill will probably buy a refurb

thanks

not really cause if u recive something ****ed or somthing stolen etc. visa covers it for a new 1 if ur dad has visa (avion) or somthing like that but why do u need a laptop if ur only in grade 9 or 10

1. I dont need the power of the mbp

2. I dont WANT the power of an mbp

3. Expensive

4. Macbook looks better

Well in this case sell the iMac and treat yourself to a refurb middle MacBook. You will be enjoying quite fast mobile computing, a not-so-cooked lap, cracked cases, and discolored palmrests. ;)

Do the macbooks really still have the problems with the plastic turning yellow??

Don't believe all the complaints. The vast majority of MacBooks are problem-free. These type of sites attract the folks who have the problems. I have had mine for over 3 months and love it to bits.
