That's undoubtedly true.

But there's more to portability than weight - it's the combination of form factor and lighter weight. I travel constantly, and it surprised me how much more convenient the UMB is compared to my previous-gen MBP - but it is. Takes less room in my bag, weighs less (which I notice over my shoulder running / jogging / walking through an airport) and is just easier to use in the field to me - on a plane, at the airport, on a lap, or on a table in a Panera / Starbucks / Insert restaurant name here.

Sounds like your trying to conyourself into buying the cheeper model. Thats fine. If your a traveling bible salesman or whatever you probably dont need the abilitys of the macbook pro.

yep

I went for the 2.4 UMBP after having the 13" macbook for 2 weeks. Couldn't take the lack of quality of the screen. So I went for the MBP 2.4 2 weeks later, I am glad I made the decision that I did.

See...thats where im stuck at. Honestly, screen quality is not that big of a deal because I have a PowerMac G5 and the minute Snow Leopard and Blu-ray support come, ill be getting a Mac Pro.

So you never plan on buying a Mac Pro then?

he said that he's going to get a Mac Pro.

I believe Patriks7 was being funny in denying that the Mac Pro will ever get Blu-ray support. Therefore, if no Blu-ray support, prelude won't be getting a MP.

The reason I took the MBP over the MB was mainly the screen size.
My laptop is my main computer, I hardly use my desktop anymore (except for games etc. which I hardly play anymore) so I don't want to be looking at anything smaller than 15".
The 17" isn't worth the extra money for me, and also I want to be able to take it with me when I'm on the road.
15" to me is perfect for home use while still not to big and heavy to take it with me.
The added graphics and overall power is a nice bonus as well.

i did the exact same thing. very well worth it! At first I was so focused on size only and portability. Sure the UMB is more portable slightly, but once I got the UBMP I had no idea what i was worried about in terms of it being too big, within a day or two i was totally use to it--the resolution is MUCH better on the pro and thats what I wanted. Also on the UMB i felt that i didnt have enough room for my dock icons so i had to put the dock on hide to get a big enough screen to view pictures and data, which may be ok for some, but not me :)
watching movies online seems much faster and more clear than on the MB too. The Pro fits fine on my lap at the cafes, infact it's better because its more well balanced across my legs--but maybe thats because im 6ft tall.

I'd recommend the MBP for the extra display real estate assuming price isn't the issue.

All the other factors (graphics, portability, etc.) are immaterial given how you plan to use the machine.

Good luck and enjoy whatever you choose!

Or I already own both. Which I do. Comparing the two, for the moment I find that what I am giving up is outweighed by the travel convenience.

I design networks and technology solutions for a living. In my opinion, they're both fine computers with advantages and disadvantages.

As an aside, if I sold Bibles for a living, I suspect I'd not notice the weight difference since I'd be lugging around boxes of books most days anyhow.

OK--I am probably the most picky, particular people around and I have both pro and mb (uni) and HONESTLY there is HARDLY a difference JUST ONE POund! And this pound is DEFINITELY NOT enough to make me want to use the UMB more. Sure the dimensions are about 2 inches larger on the pro but again its only a pound heavier, fits in all computer backpacks, messenger bags, starbucks coffee tables, etc. If there really was a big difference, trust me I would notice. I did notice at first as the UBMP seemed bigger, but in a week it did not whatsoever! So there is really no real need to keep going back and forth with these comments as it simply is splitting hairs. The Uni Macbook Pro is to the Macbook as a Audi is to a volkswagen.

thanks---

I had a UMB 2.4 for one week and then returned it for a 2.66 UMPB. Honestly, I think they're both great machines. I loved the form factor of the MB. Although not much smaller, it made a difference! It was a better size for holding on your lap and easier to throw into the laptop bag. On the other hand, the screen drove me bonkers. I was constantly fiddling with the angle of the screen and adjusting my position as the viewing angle seemed so tiny. With the screen on the Pro I never have to think about it. It's just beautiful no matter what.

My dream machine would be the MB with the screen quality of a Pro. Honestly though, most others who looked at the MB screen didn't have a problem with it and didn't even really notice the poor quality the way I did. It all comes down to what you're looking for and what looks okay to your eyes. For me, unless the screen bothered you or you needed the extra power of the Pro, I'd go with the MB.

WOW. Sounds like you take a lot of pride in being a Macbook Pro owner. Do you really need to feel good about yourself by judging people by the laptop they use???

I'm a professional but not a bible salesman. I use my Macbook mostly to write reports between appointments. I don't want something bigger and I do appreciate the form factor of the Macbook. If you think 1 pound and a smaller foot print don't matter, that's fine, but there's a REASON that Apple and Sony charge a premium for their smallest, lightest notebooks so OTHER people clearly are willing to pay for that.

You might think people con themselves into buying the mid- and lower-end products, but perhaps it is you that has been conned into believing that your self-worth is set by what you own. Good luck to you and your catalog of fine things.

why the bible salesman need a freakin macbook?

to write revision on the next bible issue on-the go while resting in air-conditioned starbucks nearby?
