I can't answer on the price, but yeah, with a lot of newer technology going into the laptops the past few years really mean that the older models are showing their age. The biggest issue though is Apple's track record with discrete GPUs, the 2011 model has some serious bad mojo with this.

Well then I guess I better hold onto this for as long as I can. I was hoping to get a good price for my Mac to offset the cost of a new (Apple Refurb) one.

A few years ago I also thought they were overpriced.. know not so much, depending on when you buy.

If you buy a Macbook they month after it has been released, I don't think it's that overpriced... you also get some stuff that are not easy to get on other machines.

I don't think there are many laptops out there with faster SSD than the rMBP, the high res screen comes standard, the form factors is nearly perfect, the trackpad is miles away from windows machines and thunderbolt is also much better than USB 3, although the peripherals are usually more expensive. And made of aluminium.

Now, go to the windows world: there are not may con / prosumer machines which can follow the rMBP on all those topics. On the professional world, there may be some choices, but at higher prices. At the end, it's difficult to find a Windows machine with the same target than the rMBP. And then comes the fact that Windows machines run Windows, which isn't a choice for me, I simply don't like it for home use.

However, right now, I don't think I'd buy a new rMBP unless I really needed it. Seeing how the new Dell XPS 13 looks like, I hope Apple brings some "innovation" into the rMBP line.. or new Retina Airs. Apples needs to update the machines to keep ahead of all the Winintel machines, ideally for me: a bit lighter and compact, 4K screen, some speed increase and same price or lower.. you have a winner there!

Right now there's just 1 machine that can match the rMBP, and it's the Asus UX301 which, as far as I know, it's the only laptop using 28W Intel chips other than the rMBP. Every other thin and light notebook uses 15W Intel chips, and it's not really the same thing.

Well that sucks. I paid almost $2,000 CAD for it when I bought it. And it was an Apple refurb. i haven't had the issues others have experienced with this logic board issue. Also I thought I saw a thread here saying that handoff could be run on 2011 Macs. I connect my Mac to my TV with HDMI but with an adapter. How many people know about specs like that? Many people go and buy a computer not even knowing what ram is or what an SSD is. All they want is something that works for their needs.

Handoff is possible if you want to change your airport bluetooth card!!!

Well it has retained 25% of it's starting price after 4 years not bad for any laptop to be honest. As macs aren't the expense they once were in comparisson to windows machines, as is extensively discussed in this thread, the resale price has taken a similar dip...

You are right many people just buy a computer that'll see to their needs, while they aren't too picky about specs they are about price however and a quick google search will show them just how much they can expect to pay for a 2011 macbook.
