MacMinute claims new iMac on TIME cover

I'm still hoping for a new portable device. This quote from the article makes it seem possible.

"Are other noncomputer appliances on the horizon? "We have some ideas," says Jobs, adding that Apple would enter the marketplace "where we think we can make a contribution." For instance? Jobs sits back, smiles and declines to elaborate. Clearly, he's already working on something new. You can bet it's the best thing that Apple has ever done."

French site

It would seem that a PDA " Made in APPLE " is on the point to be born! the iWalk (its name remains to be confirmed) could be well one of the surprises announced by Steve Jobs for MacWorld Expo which begins Monday! the iWalk would use MacOS X " light ", with a brushed interface, and buttons similar to those of QuickTime 5. Moreover, the use of this apparatus seems to be done by the use of a stylet on the screen, with a recognition of the rather powerful writing. It would be equipped with an Internet navigator, several ports (entered and left audio, FireWire port, infra-red port).

This is a translation of the burble about return of the Newton.....

And yes, it is a black vinyl cover. dammit!

In the top photo, I see the "pole" between the two, but in the cover it looks like a "hook" and nothing else.

The article did say it floats or appear to floats and a screen on a pole doesn't look like a floating screen to me.

And do you think there is anything to the clear covering over the LCD?
 
US $s and not detachable!

I don't think the price is in Canadian dollars. There is just NO way they can be THAT cheap! think about it, a 15" LCD is $929 Canadian dollars already! Sure, you can argue that the price might be dropping tomorrow, but would it be cheaper than the cheapest LCD in the market, which is $549 right now? More realisticly, the price should be around $729 or more. Which means that there the computer part is only $570? don't think so... Not to mention that some of you are still dreaming that it has a detachable LCD screen to be used as a Tablet. Again, ask yourself how much you are willing to pay for an iMac before you wish for something that is going to cost more than a PowerMac. Personally, I am quite happy with the fact that finally iDVD is going to the consumer-level Macs... That to me is ground-breaking. Who else does that in the Pee-Cee World? (for the same price)

P.S., yes, SONY has a screen that you can draw on, but it is NOT detachable, and it costs ALOT of dough! I don't know how much, but definately more than an $1899.

There is no black iPod. The picture on the French website shows an iPod in a leather case. And the prices are in US$. 1899 Canadian is like $1499 US.

harping on this but there are NO wires or cables in the photos. The cover photo, shows a better picture of how the LCD and hub connect and there are no cables/ wires between the two.

Wireless is a big thing to Apple, what if the only wire needed was to plug the new iMac in.

No thats way beyond.

(I know I'm posting alot so forgive me) why not include a keyboard and mouse with the picture. Maybe if they did that would give away the wirless secret.

With EVERY computer picture (i think) you always see the keyboard and mouse...yet this isn't every computer company.

I think there is a reason why we see no wires/cables.

You mean $1899CAD would be the same price as the high-end iMac now? Why is that so hard to believe? Apple margins have been like 22%, I think they could cut their margins to keep from upping the prices. We'll know soon enough, I suppose. If the high end machine were indeed $1499, I think sales would go through the roof. $1899, monitor-be-damned.. is still Cube territory. Steve Jobs has a lot of problems, but he does seem to learn from past mistakes.. usually.
 
the wires are threaded through the flexible extender bar thing that works like a flexible lamp. I personally really dig the design and I think a lot of other people will too once they see em up close. I think it is an excellent design for what they are being sold for, the average Joe who doesnt really know much about computers and wants something as easy to work as a TV. the design is very simple and straight forward, the monitor is all you see and in your face as well as being easily positionable to your desire, and to people that know nothing about computers the actual hardware is nothing more than a base. it should sell well.
 
THE BASE LOOKS LIKE AN AIRPORT BASE STATION

Don't you think that's a little odd? Maybe there is some wireless networking capabilities built in? Maybe it is an Airport base station and a computer!!!

Apple was working on wirelessly "daisy-chaining" base stations together so that one base station could talk to another one within the 802.11b spec distance.

Well it says "G5 with velocity engine" on it. But it looks like they changed that with Photoshop or something. Doesn't look right. Anyway, the stats say G4 on that page anyway. I don't trust it.
 
Okay guys. Don't get in a tiff over the information on informatique.com. Allow me to translate the french (since I speak it).

It says that the G4 1.2 and 1.4ghz will be released in April of 2002.

It also says that the "Newton" will be released in March.

Finally, and this destroys the credibility of the site for me, it says that the LCD iMacs aren't coming until April either.

You'll notice that the older dates are correct, but the rest seems like a fabrication. That is, unless this french site is posting the European release dates here.

Oh damnit! I'll just watch the gawdam keynote.
 
Canadian prices - again.....

The low-end iMac is $799 USD. Why? Because it doesnt have an LCD.
I think the French site has it down - the low end iMac is still the old CRT screen.

Then the cheapest LCD Jetsons iMac would be about $999 USD and then say $1299 for the superdrive.

Does that work?

Hey they have to break into a recession market here - so they need some price breaks as well as some hot goods.


I apologise for all my posts about a Newton thing.

Its just that I really loved that iWalk......except for the silly name.

checked register.com. While most of the info is the same, on time.com, it is an AOL server, it isn't for timecanada.com. Just a thought.
 
Houspod

If you could read French, then you might understand that the houspod is infact a case for an iPod.

The price of 44 Euros would be perhaps high for my taste but so be it.
