I don't have too many Mac requests, but I would like to see:

  • Windows-Style snapping feature! I can't believe how many times I try doing this when switching from my work PC to my home Mac. Current Mac snapping system is cumbersome!
  • A way to turn on on my MacBook while in clamshell mode. Not even sure if this would be possible via a software update but I would like to have my MacBook in "power nap" mode and still be able to manually wake it up.
  • "Hey Siri" for Mac. At least when plugged in. Not sure why this doesn't exist yet.
  • Ability to view iPhone/iPad notifications on my Mac- even if my Mac doesn't have the app. Kinda like how the Apple Watch does it. I just wanna know when I get an iOS update when my phone and watch are away from me.
  • As a "bonus feature", I think it would be neat if I could 'reverse airplay' from my Mac to my iPhone or iPad.

Make full screen apps accesable via hot key (like with OSX 10.8 - I think)... the lack of is a disaster.

How about a siri that is freaking worth anything. No matter what i ask her to do or look up she can't, doesn't know how, or flat out doesn't respond. When my first reaction to a new "feature" is to turn it off, yeah, fix it or ditch it.

How about an option to allow the active app & window to keep the focus? I want to launch an app, switch back to what I was doing while that app loads "in the background", and NOT have the new app steal the focus. Please just let the app in the front, stay in the front!!! At least give us a setting in System Preferences, on the General panel right beneath "Close windows when quitting an app".

- Resume playback in iTunes, which was available in SoundJam MP 2.5.3 from which Apple iTunes was developed in 2001 (16 years ago!).
- Full Finder color labels.
- Arrows in scroll bars.
- Working Apple Mail import tool from Eudora Mail for Mac supporting non-ASCII characters.
- Integration of Contacts (Address Book), Notes and Calendar in a single application.
- Allow to customize and remember "File - Find" (Command F) settings, instead of the mostly useless "Kind is Any" default.
- Implement rich-search options as HoudahSpot (requiring indexing) and EasyFind (not requiring indexing). The latter is essential to search non-indexed disks.

Can we move on to MacOS 11 already?
Mac OS 9 -> Mac OS X was a HUGE thing. Mac OS 9 was just the old Classic OS up-to-date on PPC G4's.
Mac OS X was the saviour of Apple (Steve's OS with NeXT): solid UNIX core and lovely Aqua GUI. The pavement to the future Mac OS and iOS.

Mac OS X -> OS X -> macOS is just a naming thing, no real groundbreaking new OS.

Marketing wise, I'm sure:
- iOS 11
- tvOS 11
- watchOS 11
- macOS 11
...would seem a nice line-up.

Especially as Windows is now @ 10.

macOS 11 SHOULD be a new huge step forward. Not just the intro of APFS what most users don't notice and / or understand anyway. Yeah, yeah... "It's just better".

But, who could really help the Mac with a groundbreaking, earth-shattering new OS, while keeping current developers happy..?
I'm afraid the computing-device technology has ground to a halt OS-wise anyway.

So, Apple just pick the low-hanging Apples, so to speak. Create mac OS 11. Well, name it that way.

Personally, I'd like to see a better Finder for accessing files/folders. Maybe I'm corrupted from years of Windows use, but I got hooked on an alphabetical folder view that listed folders at the top, followed by files. I'd also like to see Finder windows adjust the icon/thumbnail layout when the Finder window is resized.
That's what the current Finder does. Click on the Arrange icon and select "name". To have folders stay on top, select the appropriate checkbox in the advanced tab of the Finder preferences.

How about just quit taking away features and make the ones that are already present, work correctly. For example, 3 way video chats. Spotlight never finds files I know exist. iCloud sucks for a sharing platform. Some of us want to share with people that are not family and are not linked economically to us. iTunes is convoluted and not intuitive and has become a marketing tool instead of an audio video management tool. Even the Apple store software upgrades either don't update in the GUI or the update info is wrong. Etc., etc.

How about the ability to verify that the mass storage device is intact. How about the ability to control or list changes to the OS. How about instead of pushing the user away from any understanding of the OS, Apple gives the user GUI tools to understand and manage the OS.

Yeh, Yeh, Yeh, I understand that these are not needed for teenagers that are snap-chating. That is what phones are for. Apple needs to abandon this idea of turning macOS into iOS. Then they need to put macOS on the iPad, release some real hardware, or allow macOS to be installed on 3rd party hardware.

There are professionals that would prefer to work on macOS, which Apple is making increasing harder.

Glad to see that our dear Juli Clover read our posts in the forum :D

Now, let me ask something to the macrumors community: What if Apple makes mandatory, with this iteration, for the apps to be purchased in the App Store? I mean: do you think it would be a good idea, this time and for the following iterations of macOS, to only allow apps installed from the Mac App Store? No more dmg installers.

Obviously some heavy companies in the software industry, like Microsoft with its Office, and Adobe with its Creative Suite, should start selling its products through the Mac App Store.

OpenGL 4.5
Vulkan
A lag-free compositor
10-bit colour/HDR support
Stop nuking Homebrew every time I upgrade

I would like to see an advanced TV app that lets you quickly and powerfully organize your "up next" feed and the shows you want to be notified about.

Nope, I would dump macOS as soon as possible if this happened.

I'd also like theming support. I remember in the OS9 days how fun that was.

I want to be able to ask Siri to read me the article I'm looking at and she'll read it!

Shouldn't the wish list include fixing the long term bugs?? Or MR only cares about cosmetic features...

Indeed. Steel tight stability is by far the most important feature of any os. That's why there were so many fans of the late and great Snow Leopard: People felt it made stability the most important 'feature'.

iCloud Backup for Mac.. (the same way our iPhones and iPads backup) duh... that dinosaur Time Machine app will finally get dragged to the cemetery.

This would make upping my cloud storage a good investment.

It would also be great if you could create an image of each drive.

TimeMachine on iCloud, I'm pretty sure is going to be one of the key features of the next Mac OS

Christ, yes please. Been wanting this for years. They'd even make more money on me because I'd gladly pay for the 2TB iCloud storage tier.

- Metal v1_3 to improve GFX support to near DX12 level
- Metal v2_1 to give HSA / hUMA support for special hardware. That would give macOS an edge to beat Windows, 20-30% better results with same hardware
- Improved Finder with easy tool to find multiple same files
- A lot better Siri

I have multiple monitors and that painfully long trip all the way to the menubar and back multiple times per minute is killing me. Please please can we have per window application menus. I know you can put the menubar on every monitor but that's just a messy solution.

Also, can we fire everybody involved with Mail and iTunes and just start over with those apps.

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet: first party support for (Open) ZFS please, Apple! I don't trust my data to any other file system.

Oh, and better support for NFS-mounted home directories.

It hasn't been mentioned because it is never going to happen. Apple is committed to their own APFS file system for all of their platforms and we can expect to see full support of AFPS on macOS later this year in 10.13 update.

Best of all, AFPS is already being used by 10s of million users on iOS since all 10.13 users are using APFS with no major issues.

NFS-mounted isn't likely to happen because of MAS + sandboxing, it has a lot of problems running apps from non-standard locations.

APFS. Reliable Time Machine. Window management. PIP. And lots of general improvements and tidy ups right across the OS.
