What's that yellow strip on this MBP, seems like double sided tape:

Can't you already resize the columns independent of each other?

Pretty much any solid Finder replacement has implemented “automatic column size” option for a long time. Take ForkLift 3 for example. The option is called “resize column to fit”, which “when checked, column width will be adjusted to the longest filename in column view”. This results in a much more stremlined browsing, where columns are only as wide as they have to be - no space is wasted on one side, no folders/filenames are hidden from view on another side.

This option in Finder works only(!) for single column and than it stops working. It is fundamentally and complete broken. And I really cant wrap my head around this not being fixed for several years now.

p.s. I would of switch to ForkLift 3 and call it a day if only it would run as smooth as Finder does. Unfortunately thats not the case in my experience with MacBook Pro 13” and LG 5K. The UI gets sluggish when things are resized...

When previewing files using the spacebar you can hold-shift and tap the up arrow to preview each file while simultaneously selecting the files...it is very handy. This feature DOES NOT work with the down arrow (except for already highlighted finder items) this is quite annoying and I think it should be fixed.

It's a real shame how Apple has handled the situation around multi-party FaceTime calls. This was a feature of the former iChat, and it worked great, well before other video chat platforms supported it. Then FaceTime came along, dropped the feature, and hasn't had it since. Sad.

You're absolutely right! And it's bugs like this that live on for far too long, which only highlights Apple's neglect of their core software — Finder, System Preferences, etc.

Why in System Preferences does the "Grid" button in the title bar still appear when already viewing all preference icons? Clicking it does nothing. Hurts my head to understand how such basic user interface bugs can exist over the course of 10+ years. Yes, minor, but still not an example of Apple's goal of perfection.

I'd love to see Apple make computers worthy of the word "Pro" for us to use this new release on.

My bet is the rearchitecturing they had to do to FaceTime that made it non peer-to-peer (patent lawsuit) bumped this down the priority list and no one cared to rescue the idea.

  • Mail still occasionally has a hard time counting. Title bar says x items unread, Dock icon says y items, and actual mailbox shows zero items.

I have 12 accounts set up in Mail from different providers; been using Mail for 10+ years. Never noticed this problem.

I use IMAP for all of my accounts. Which protocol are you using? POP3, IMAP, or ?

HomeKit, Siri always on, Airplay 2 in sync with all outputs, Video Multicasting, Siri to function at Alexa level.

For Apple to make inroads into the lead that Amazon and Google have Siri needs to quickly be perceived as superior to its competitors, hopefully without intruding on privacy as much as Google and Amazon do.

Allow Command-Control-Shift-4 to save JPG or PNG files, right now it is .TIFF files only!!! and they are huge files!!!!

FYI, regular Command-shift-4 (screenshot saves to desktop) allows for multiple file types (if you change via the commend line).

Not sure what you're trying to do but cmd-control-shift-4 saves to the clipboard, without control, the image goes to a file.

If you use Preview, go to File -> Take Screenshot. That'll put the result into a new document for you. Then you can save to whatever format you want.

As you mention, you can use terminal to change the file type:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tiff | gif | jpg | pdf / etc

.. but the default is png, not sure why you're getting TIFF files.

My #1 feature to add: Support for CUE sheets generated by Exact Audio Copy open-source software on the Windows platform. If Apple would use its cash supply and engineers to support the creation of a cross-platform Mac edition of Exact Audio Copy, I would be ecstatic.

At present, mac OS does not support CUE sheets generated by Exact Audio Copy on the Windows platform. mac OS does not recognize CUE sheets as a text file, but mistake them for a Terminal file. Moreover, mac OS does not provide a distinct file icon for CUE sheets, as if they were some internal Terminal files not to be opened by non-programmers.

Exact Audio Copy is the gold standard for the creation of losslerss audio digital copies of CD music records. It would be great if it would be supported on the mac OS platform and CUE sheets recognized for what they are, i.e. text files to be opened by Mac users and used by music software.

0. Update all apps to modern state. The built-in stuff should be all up to date.
1. Better and more robust networking and LAN file sharing. It still not reliable in many many situations and setups.
2. Split iTunes to multiple Apps, with at least one for non-apple music subscribers.
3. Better App Store, with acceptable search, and features present in virtually any decent online store.
4. Abandon non-Apple service ID dependence. It should be all-Apple, ID, email, notification etc.
5. Stickies with iCloud.
6. Better Spotlight and indexing control
7. Proper support for tags in Mail App
8. I am not sure what I can ask from Siri and Map team, but they are seriously behind, and overall primary pain point is weak search.
