A lot of people. I’ve used similar apps to achieve this and the quality is significant. And you can do a lot of the same things on your Mac as your phone, including texting and even using iOS apps now. You don’t have to use the feature. But it’s very nice to have.
it also helps by letting you take the camera away from your desk to show someone something.

What???

Just make the built in camera do this crap. This is the one of the dumbest, clunkiest, things apple has ever done.
They did improve the built-in camera. It's just not as good as the iPhone for a variety of reasons. One being most people aren't concerned with having a great camera on their computer and it's an added cost. Another, which has been discussed at length here on MacRumors, is that the MacBook screens are way thinner than the iPhone so you can't even have the same optics.

The 1950s would like to remind you of where that attitude leads to

Edit: To note, using the iPhone as a camera is a cool idea due to the positioning opportunities. The bracket for the top of the screen is stupid, poor engineering and reveals a massive product flaw initially: crap cameras.
Safety is relative. Over a million people every year die in auto accidents. Also, that's a red herring anyway. We're not talking about personal safety, we're talking about giving the low budget vloggers what they want by using what's probably the best camera they own with their computer.

The laptop screens have crap cameras because they have to be thin. The iPhone is a thicker device and houses massively better optics. I can't speak to why your studio display has a crap camera other than Apple was being cheap. At least now you'll have another option, whether you want to use it or not.

Having watched my 13 Pro bounce down a large chalk ravine like Homer Simpson off a cliff, and it surviving unscathed I can assure you that their description is sound :)
So let's wait and see how many people actually break their computers by using this before we judge it, eh? I think they probably did a tiny bit of research on it.

The original iSight cameras had a variety of different clamps and mounts similar to this for different screens, though I preferred the magnetic one that worked on the cinema displays and G5 iMacs.

this wouldn't have happened if Jony Ive were still around
Just like the fragile super thin iPhone 6 and the stupid 2016 macbook pro designs.
Jony was at its peak in the early days, but his philosophy of form over funcion hampered the products themselves.
The current macbook pros are leagues better than any previous model

Hopefully this works with my 2018 Mac Mini.

I dont have a webcam since I don’t do video calls but this would be a nice option if ever needed to.

Everyone complaining how this is un Apple like and how Apple should build in better webcams, I get it. You'd much rather have better build in webcams. So do I. Until then I can finally rely on an apple native version, can stop using my tripod for my phone and enjoy the much improved quality of the webcam experience. Because even if webcams got a lot better, it will be a long while before they reach iPhone level. And if you don't need it because you just pretend to listen on that conference call whilst playing mobile games anyways, so who needs a good webcam? also good. Skip it.

I'm happy about every bit of quality I can gain in video calls as I find them exhausting enough as they are. The better the sound and video quality becomes, the more natural it is for me. So thanks for this one Apple, didn't see this coming.

Can't help but think this is a response to the flack that the Studio Display received.

Although those with older Macs with 720p webcams will benefit from this.

But still a solution to a problem that shouldn't exist.

I could see this being really valuable for a person who wants the camera angle to be different from exactly where their screen is pointing. I have 3 monitors and it will be nice to set up a camera from any height or angle I want.

Academic Anti-cheating services would love to have this, except the pool of people with an iPhone + Mac + Bracket is not going to be high enough to compel schools to use it.

The mount reminds me of the original iSight camera. One of the mounts in the box clamped to the top of a display. I'm really looking forward to this in Ventura!

I wonder how many people will use this. The actual benefits gained from hooking up your phone like this are minimal. And while you use your phone as a camera, you can't do anything else with it.
I could use it with my Mac mini, I guess.. my monitor doesn't have a camera .. but then again I'm sure the clip will cost more than an external camera

The thing is basically using the screen edge as a fulcrum on a high torque lever. It's a force amplifier. Pop goes the screen.
It's MagSafe. Any pressure applied to the phone would make it fall off the connector. Safe as safe can be.

I've been using EpocCam Pro with an old iPhone 7 on Zoom for the past 2 years.
I look forward to using this new feature, plus it should be available to use on FaceTime.

Or those of us with Studio Displays that have crappy built in webcams!
I had a call once with a client, and I had to ask him if he was feeling okay, he looked so pale and ill, I also offered him to postpone the call. He replied with no no, all fine, it’s his crap Studio Display camera that makes him look like a zombie. 😂
