Sorry apple. This is a work around. A better solution is how about you put a web cam in your laptops that is newer than 10 years old. Your laptop web cams are crap.

I don't really understand all the hate on this thread.....there are basically 0 laptops with great built in webcams. Apple has led the industry with including them in their laptops long before other manufactures got on board, and now since it's not financially/physically possible to add a 4K webcam to a thin entry level laptop, people are losing their minds. I think it's a very innovative idea and for the posts about breaking screens, I doubt Apple would be supporting this project without making sure it will safely. If you want a great webcam, buy one and plug it in. Or use this idea from Apple. Just my 2 cents.

Because in terms of laptop web cams apple went from industry leading to industry worse.

Yet, for some reason the 14" and 16" MBPs cameras are coming out quite bad in terms of quality.
They're about the same as every other laptop camera. They're better than some, and only marginally worse than others. Laptop cameras are notoriously bad. Seriously. This isn't even debatable. The only thing good about laptop webcams is that they're there if you need them for convenience, but they all look like hot garbage.

When the HDMI port died on my GH4 that I was using for zoom teaching, I had really hoped there was a way to do this with my phone. There wasn’t, which was disappointing, although there was some paid app that promised that functionality. So I can see the usefulness, and I’m glad it’s coming.

That said, it is rather funny, since it does mean apple’s acknowledging that they have a problem with the built-in camera.

I have a MacStudio with a 4k monitor. This is great if I want to enable FaceTime. However, I'm not clear if this supports audio from the phone as well....as the MacStudio does not have a built-in microphone. A 'webcam' can often refer to a device that does both audio/video, yet no mention so far regarding use of the phone's mics.
That’s a really good point. If I want to run a wireless lav, can I just have it going to the phone, or do I have to rig something to the MacBook Pro to get audio?

From other software I've used you can have it coming from anywhere, including the phone.

Well, that's one way to get around the crappy built in cams. But will it work on an external monitor too?

I wonder how many people will use this. The actual benefits gained from hooking up your phone like this are minimal. And while you use your phone as a camera, you can't do anything else with it.
Non-issue. Buy another iPhone to use as a phone; while your current iPhone gets used as a camera.

The thing is basically using the screen edge as a fulcrum on a high torque lever. It's a force amplifier. Pop goes the screen.

You have used a lot of fancy sounding words there, however everything have said is a complete nonsense.

This would have been an invaluable feature for me to have when I was conducting remote teaching during the pandemic. I wanted to showcase a particular mathematical concept using maths manipulatives to my students and ended up attaching my ipad to a stand and mirroring it to my ipad via QuickTime.

This feature would have let me project what was on my desk directly using my phone and skipping the clutter. Would have been nice if it had been available last year, but better late than never, I suppose.

This is actually pretty cool. I upgrade my phone much more often than my laptops, so it would be nice to be able to "upgrade" my webcam without upgrading a laptop. It would even be useful on my mac mini for the desk view when I'm in Zoom meetings with my colleagues.

You can already do that on Big Sur and earlier with Quicktime, OBS and Zoom by attaching your iPhone and using it as an external Camera.

I bet a 3D printed model of this mount already exists so I’ll be good to go when my AnkerMake M5 arrives this autumn! This will be especially good for my Intel iMac as I doubt they’ll sell a mount for it.

I can explain it in terms of effort, load and mechanical advantage if you do desire. A newton in there, a mechanical advantage here and a few newtons out there and oh right a cracked screen dah dee dah. Same outcome.

Nope.

Mac Studio + Asus monitor here. i'm curious about this feature and i hope that it works well. i'm currently using an old Panasonic G85 with an Elgato Camlink. it works quite well with the kit lens, but a prime would obviously be better. i'm curious to see if a 13 Pro Max would work better.
