Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.1.1 on Tuesday with "important bug fixes." While the release notes did not specify which bugs were fixed, we have confirmed that the update resolves a software update issue with M3 Macs and an Adobe Photoshop bug.

At least some 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac models equipped with the standard M3 chip shipped with an unreleased build of macOS Ventura 13.5 installed, and macOS 14.1 was not showing up as an available software update in the System Settings app. Fortunately, it is now possible to update these Macs to macOS 14.1.1. MacBook Pro models with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips were not affected by this issue.

macOS 14.1.1 also fixes a bug that prevented users from clicking on a section of the toolbar in Photoshop on macOS 14.1, as noted by @JonyIveParody on X.

Apple also released macOS Ventura 13.6.2 with bug fixes. The update resolves an issue where 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon chips "start up to a black screen or circled exclamation point after the built-in display's default refresh rate is changed," according to an Apple support document.

macOS 14.1.1 and macOS 13.6.2 do not have any published security patches, despite Apple's release notes saying each update includes security fixes.

I’m guessing this update supposed to be out by the time the M3 Macs shipped but slipped somehow?

When I first set up my 16” M3 Pro MBP, I saw some odd graphics/GUI things going on in a couple of apps, after doing the 14.1.1 update those issues seem to have been resolved.

I really hope that issue was fixed in 14.1.1, though I don’t see anything specific about that. Apparently Monterey (the last version of that had that same black-screen-inducing bug) has not had a corresponding update yet.

It is fixed but partially :

14.1.1 : If you disable Promotion and restart, Promotion would be re-enabled automatically .... (Incorrect behaviour)
13.6.2 : If you disable Promotion and restart, Promotion would stay off .... (Correct behaviour)
14.1.1 : If you have external monitor connected and you disable Promotion for both built-in one and external one and restart, Promotion would stay off for both .... (Correct behaviour)

All about quick fixes .... Total mess !

No wonder this bug slipped by. What kind of monster purposely lowers the refresh rate? That's a big part of the reason to buy this laptop in the first place.

There are some apps that interact poorly with the variable-refresh-rate that is ProMotion.

No Mac (or Windows, for that matter) user would reasonably expect that changing any display setting (or any setting available in System Preferences) would result in the computer essentially being bricked, and that’s exactly what was happening. And when they got into that state, DFU mode did not always work. Apple’s explanation of that bug was extremely disingenuou, based on my own experiences with four MacBook Pros over the past few weeks.

Just repeat the Apple support mantra: “This only affects a small number of users.”

Yikes. I was half kidding but that is much worse than I realized.

I should also mention: no one at Apple’s support or “Genius Bar” knew (or would admit to knowing) what the problem was. When it first came up, it was very easy to assume it was hardware failure, as that is exactly how it looked. Black screen, no recovery options, and DFU giving irregular/inconsistent results. Worst Apple issue I’ve ever seen in over three decades of using Macs.

So far my M2 13” MB Air running 13.6.1 keeps telling me my system is up to date and won’t offer me the 13.6.2 update…just 14.1.1. Is there any way to force it to find 13.6.2?

The 13.6.2 update is only for 14/16" MacBook Pros (except M3 Pro/Max models) and M3 iMacs. It will not install on any currently available MacBook Airs.

Welcome to the new Apple Support experience: erase and reinstall, if that doesn’t work, RTA to engineering, and receive the response, “Engineering is aware of the issue. Keep your device up to date. No further troubleshooting will be provided.”

Does anyone have a link or reference that says this explicitly? Everything I have found says that Apple recommends it for all users. I also found a full install package for 13.6.2 at a link on this page: https://www.iclarified.com/87836/where-to-download-macos-ventura
I ran the package and it put a newer version of "Install macOS Ventura.app" in my Applications folder. But now I'm hesitant to run the app!

EDIT: After more intense digging I found this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222

For 13.6.2 it says available for: MacBook Pro (2021 and later) and iMac (2023) I guess I'll leave that package I downloaded alone.
