I'm not aware of any other 5K displays with a glossy glass screen, the alternatives all seem to have a matte finish.

Because the other manufacturers target professional users.

Glossy has more disadvantages than advantages. Starting with color distortion and ending with long-term damage to the eyes.

I don't know what it's like in your country. But in mine, employers are not allowed to put glossy monitors in the office.

Hate to say this but it's not "outdated" it's a fully professional colour calibrated display. Age doesn't outdate something of this nature. It's why displays in post houses are there for years and years, because the standards are set. This display is used to create content for Netflix and streamers alike so it's hardly "outdated simply because it doesn't have a camera or speakers. I can't imagine what they could add to it to make it any more "up-to-date"

A lot aren't even glass. I had a dell "pro display" for a long time, and it was a plastic hybrid.

Evidence?

I'd say that the problem is lights/windows shining on badly-positioned screens. Glossy screens can be positioned so they reflect lights/windows away from your eyes. Matte/"anti glare" screens just sweep that under the carpet by scattering the light in all directions - including into your eyes - which wipes out contrast. I've worked in rooms where matte screens would be completely wiped out by sunlight shining through a window, while glossy screens stayed usable.

For home/personal use, fix your blinds and light fittings before splashing several grand on a display (not so easy in the workplace).

The Apple "glossy" screens have a particularly good optical coating on the glass which cuts down reflectivity without scattering light.

Perhaps some people have used their monitor for ten years, or currently don't have one and are reasonably waiting for an update instead of buying the 6 year old, clearly outdated model.

True - the question is what are people actually waiting for? We've seen some big advances on laptop/tablet-sized screens (from Apple and others) but the world of 5k3k and 6k panels doesn't seem to be offering anything substantially better than the Studio Display or the Pro XDR.

The Studio Display is substantially the same 5k panel - just a tad brighter - as a 2017 iMac - and I don't see anything dramatically better at 5k3k resolution with - say - a (burn-proof) OLED panel, local dimming or high-frame-rate on the market.

There are now a couple of interesting 6k/32" options much cheaper than the Pro XDR - but AFAIK nothing with any sort of local dimming, even the limited number of zones on the XDR.

Last I looked, Apple don't make display panels - obviously they've found some way of sourcing new tech "custom" panels for the iPad and MacBooks, but do they sell enough desktop displays to commission a novel panel? Esp. since they'll probably only work on Macs with TB5 interfaces.

If the XDR display ever gets a camera for the other side, they need to call it the "Backstage Camera" or nothing matters anymore

Am i the only one seeing having NO camera as a plus? Really dont want to be spied on by a a camera with a ai chip in the bg. And i have great studio monitors anyway so speakers is also not of interest. Just qet the screen properties right. Ideally just more dimming zones or some other tech to reduce halos. Then 120hz preferably

Still dreaming of an Apple ultrawide display with Retina resolution and HDMI input support (even if I had to use a dongle, that would be sufficient, as their current monitors don't even support HDMI signals through a dongle).

coming in the fall of 25
coming in the spring of 26
coming in the fall of 26
for only $6499

Except resolution, obviously. There are no 5K or above OLED displays available anywhere. They are all 4K or below.

They are coming, possibly even in 2026, but right now the number available is zero.

God forbid Apple actually innovated and brought something to market that pushed the boundaries. But no - better to keep milking existing technology to death and charge obscene amounts for accessories and stands.

I wonder if they'll manage to reach 120Hz (to match their pro laptops' pro-motion) and squeeze the HDR High-Gamut very high definition signal into the TB4 (M3 series), or if it will require TB5 (M4 and more recent)
