The WWDC invites are out so it’s time for another round of ‘guess the name of MacOS’.

Unused copyrighted names
Condor
Diablo
Farallon
Grizzly
Mammoth
Miramar
Pacific
Redwood
Redtail
Rincon
Shasta
Skyline
Tiburon

Used MacOS names
Tahoe
Sequoia
Sonoma
Ventura
Monterey
Big Sur
Catalina
Mojave
High Sierra
Sierra
El Capitan
Yosemite
Mavericks

Based on rumours, it appears that this will be a Snow Leopard release that will focus primarily on bug fixes and refinement of Liquid Glass. I assume they will reflect this by using another name from the Tahoe area rather than a new location (eg, Yosemite > El Capitan, Sierra > High Sierra). Therefore my guess is MacOS Emerald as in Emerald Bay.

Start guessing.

South Lake Tahoe (like Sierra to High Sierra). 😉

Interesting, but if you look at the locations, starting with Mojave, they keep moving north, generally. Based on unused names, Redwood or Shasta seem to be next.

Badwater (Death Valley) as in dubious liquid and its geographically the lowest low point.

I've been so mired in Tahoe that I didn't even think about that until now. "Tahoe Take 2" might be encouraging.

(Are those copyrights or registered trademarks? I didn't think you could copyright just a proper noun.)

All wallpapers have been spring Tahoe (with snow-capped mountains in the distance), so a Tahoe-related name — I like Emerald Bay, but it's small — could be good. I expect if they take this route, the branding would turn more winter-like, as a nod to the Snow Leopard release.

I doubt it would happen but as this is Apple’s 50th anniversary it would be the only time Cupertino could be a contender. It makes sense to pay homage to the place where it all began.

Even though rumours point to this being a refinement OS, it’s a near certainty from a marketing point of view that this macOS is going to focus heavily on Siri and Apple Intelligence.

So while they may work on clearing up the bugs, the messaging will be that Apple Intelligence has (finally) arrived. I think the name will reflect that.

macOS echo

From Echo Lake or Echo Summit near Tahoe. And of course, “Echo” also reflects the communication style between the user and Siri.

I also like the idea of honouring Cupertino. Why move from cat names to places in California and skip the one place where Apple is based? Like @Tar Sniffer said, the 50th Anniversary is the chance to do that.

macOS Emerald seems the most logical to me.
Not sure why anyone would expect them to reflect the 50th anniversary of Apple specifically in the name of macOS, I don’t think they will do that at all. The Mac isn’t 50, and they truthfully didn’t really do much for the 50th anniversary already.
Also consider that Apple also names the operating system version after the main year it will be installed on the most devices, in this case 2027. Apple’s 50th anniversary year is 2026, and macOS 26 featured a major redesign that was intended to unify across all of Apple‘s platforms. If there were any year for them to call it ‘Cupertino’ it was then.
I also can’t think of any previous time where Apple has named an operating system after an expected feature within that operating system, which is why I don’t think a name based off of Siri’s rumored improvement is likely either.

macOS Emerald not only plays off of the previous OS, but it also just sounds positive and snappy.

Mostly agree.

Only hang up with Emerald is “Emerald Triangle in Northern California (Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties), the largest U.S. cannabis-producing region. It is a remote area famous for legal/illegal cultivation.” 😉

That being said, I think they could use “macOS Emerald Bay” which is one of the nicest parts of Lake Tahoe and it’s on the California side so it sticks to California locations (and Snow Leopard, High Sierra, and Big Sur etc shows they are willing to use a name with two words). It would also track/relate as a refinement of Tahoe. They might use Emerald Bay waiting until macOS is more refined and stable before leaving the lake lol. EDIT: Didn’t notice that @twinpeaks_sf already made this suggestion earlier.

Apple’s fairly full of itself but I don’t see them using Cupertino either (although they did pepper Cupertino throughout macOS - the old maps icon showing the Infinite Loop location off I-280 for example).

Maybe they decide to honor both founders with “macOS Jobsniak” (apologies to Ron Wayne, should have held on to your 10% bro).

No need to worry, this is the same company that named it macOS High Sierra, because, as Craig Federighi put it, “the marketing people assured us that this name was ‘fully baked’.”
