To continue the Snow Leopard theme, I wondered if they might call it macOS 27 Lake Tahoe. That has a nice ring to it, although not sure if it strictly makes sense from a geographical standpoint.

Failing that, I do like the sound of macOS 27 Emerald Bay. “Miramar” is also growing on me.

There have been rumours for the last couple of years that they might forego names entirely and just focus on the version number. I know it makes no practical difference to anything but I hope they stick with the names… I always enjoy the cheesy ‘reveal’ during the keynotes!

Ouch! Thanks for bringing that to my attention, judgeFire... I live in the UK, and this particular story had passed me by. In that context, the name 'Lake Tahoe' would indeed be pretty 'tone deaf' to say the least.

My hope would be for Apple to totally eschew all this AI hype and focus on functionality instead, but that's for another thread. Mind you, given their track record so far, one could argue they're already eschewing AI by accident! 😀

This is the first time they’ve used a manmade structure as a location. Hopefully they will introduce some fun dynamic wallpapers of the waters or fog.

Does anyone get the joke? Apple just basically revealed their plans.. Gate.. think about why we have gates.. This is indeed a very bad bad day for Mac OS... RIP Mac OS..

Mac OS is already in prison, locked up, this new name provides all the proof of Apple's intention to shutter Mac OS, it is not an accident they chose this name, it is a very sad day that a once great OS is about to be terminated..

I feel that name is going to land with a thud
Not a fan of the name, but so far using the OS beta for testing, it performance at least is the reverse of a "thud", but a "sigh" of relief. You are too nice saying "thud". I could think of a few more flavory words that came to my mind when I heard the name of the OS when announced. LOL

OS Seems faster, all apps work, no issues so far, looks better with the toned down L.G. (though I did not mine L.G.).

If this beta continues in the way it originally launched yesterday, this could be one of the best minimal issued official launch of a mac OS that I can remember and will over look the name.

Look forward to Sept-Oct official launch date.

Nope.. It is a clear announcement on the demise of the OS.. Apple is shuttering Mac OS..
I wouldn't get too paranoid, even though I also do dislike the increasing developments of macOS into a stricter and stricter walled garden, as gate, as in Golden Gate, is a gateway between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific.

gate
noun

• [in names] a mountain pass or other natural passage: the Golden Gate.

So hopefully a passage from wonky Tahoe to a smoother, leaner and cleaner Golden Gate.

I am not paranoid, that is something Apple is very very good at.. Gate means locked away, unable to access, prevents passage...

Apple has announced the demise of Mac OS as a viable operating system.. They spent the whole WWDC video talking about nothing.. Nothing important.. design updates that a stupid tictok could have done...

Mac OS is functionally useless, a name change to something even more draconian is a good thing???

That’s a wrap. See you in 2027 when Apples crack marketing team’s minibus returns.

A terrible name, as it symbolizes the demise of the operating system..Gates are bad..Especially when in relation to operating systems...

A great name, as it symbolizes the opening of the operating system. Gates are good. A gate or gateway is a point of entry to or from a space enclosed by walls. The word is derived from Proto-Germanic *gatan, meaning an opening or passageway.

I think it's named Golden Gate for the strait over which the Golden Gate Bridge crosses, rather than the bridge itself?
Tradition has it that the entrance to San Francisco Bay was found by a Spanish ship searching for the Bay, but had to stay offshore quite a ways due to dangerous currents and winds that threatened to blow them onto the shore. After a long search, the ship was quite by accident opposite the entrance to the bay, but they couldn't see it until the sun came up in the East, and lit the entrance up with a golden light as the sunlight reflected off the water in the entrance. The Captain immediately named it the Golden Gate.
Now that is the way I heard it while living in SF. Whether or not there is any truth to that tale is another matter, which I don't believe even matters at all.
