Why would the ARM build of macOS suddenly become faster if the Intel build ceases to exist?
I really don't think it's about speed, or even binary size (which would shrink, but probably not significantly vs. other bloat). I suspect that it's mainly about not needing to maintain and test everything across an ever-increasing number of permutations of platform.
Being optimistic, maybe this will free up developer resources to do a Snow Leopard-style clean and polish. Or maybe Apple will just trouser any savings. We'll see.
It must be annoying for Apple to continue to support the failed TouchBar because it was built into some early M1 Macs (whyyyyyy). I hope they don't use that as a reason to drop support for the M1 series anytime soon.

and x86/T2 any more...
Remember, nearly
every new release of MacOS drops support for some older Mac models, regardless of processor types - this seems random but is likely due to some specific component becoming harder to support. if Apple wanted to drop support for the touchbar they could drop those few models without throwing out the entire M1 range.
This is why I have an old PC running Windows XP and another one running Windows 98. Not sure why people are complaining in this thread. It is not like I can call up Microsoft and get support for Windows 98. Or call up Intel and get support for my very old Pentium.

To be fair, Microsoft only
finally cut off all 16-bit Windows/DOS compatibility when they finally dropped the 32 bit edition of Windows 10 - which wasn't EOL'd until
last year. That would be like expecting Sequoia to still support "Classic" mode. Of course, Windows hasn't gone through so many "big bang" total architecture changes as Mac - while the current AMD64 ISA may have changed beyond recognition compared with 8086, that's been a step-by-step process with backwards compatibility baked in at each stage.
However, that "compatibility" was always very much "do you feel lucky" and "if it breaks you get to keep both halves" - possibly Apple have higher standards and are happier to drop support rather than leave stuff unmaintained. Plus, it's very much up to individual hardware and software vendors to keep compatibility with older systems - they ignore legacy Windows at their peril, but legacy MacOS support is a bit more optional.
