Thank goodness. My Mid 2014 MacBook Pro is fine. I think this will be the last update until I get a new iMac. Just waiting for the redesign before I jump ship.
If you had read and understood what I was saying and not excluded some of the critical words in my post you wouldn't have a defense here. I said that buying a Mac doesn't entitle you to endless free upgrades of an OS. Apple is offering their OS upgrades free NOW, but years back customers had to pay $129 for an OS upgrade even after dropping $5000 for a system. I don't think Microsoft is giving constant free upgrades to Windows 10 for very old computers are they?I got news for you buddy : Apple says you're 100% nonsense , because it says on its website that the 2013/2014 are "entitled" to a free upgrade to Big Sur, and even harass you to upgrade to it as soon as possible.
Perhaps you should contact them and explain to them that they shouldn't "entitle" those Macs to upgrade ?
Why? If Apple says my 2014 MBP is supported then I expect it to be supported without issues. I installed Catalina on day one without issues, but I will wait until this issue is confirmed fixed.Furthermore while I'm not saying bricking should happen I think it's a stretch trying to install the latest OS on near 7 and 8 year old computers and expect to have no issues.
Buy me a computer future boy.Stop living in the past.
I already said why in an earlier post. Why? If Apple says my 2014 MBP is supported then I expect it to be supported without issues. I installed Catalina on day one without issues, but I will wait until this issue is confirmed fixed.
Everybody with this issue should try this before taking to AppleI took it off power and pressed power button, nothing. Held it down for 10 secs, then it booted to Apple logo before resuming the install (was at 29 minutes remaining)...after that, I plugged it back into power (but not the display) and the update went fine.
Still not understanding your point. 2013/2014 MacBook Pro's ARE supported by Big Sur. This, according to Apple. Thus, those systems shouldn't be having an issue like this.If you had read and understood what I was saying and not excluded some of the critical words in my post you wouldn't have a defense here. No one has the time to debug issues likes this.A lot of people are reporting black screens and reporting their machines because of this issue. I would suggest them to just be patient. I updated my late 2013 MBP 13" on Friday and everything went smooth. It took a good hour and during most of the time the screen was black or even off but it came back every now and then. During the process I had to login twice using my password as the MBP rebooted but just as I said it was absolutely pain free and Big Sur runs great on an old machine like this.
I haven't once suggested that anyone go out and buy a new computer. You're using that as a defense against me and others stating that it doesn't make any sense to instantly upgrade to the latest OS on old machines that are mission critical to the users needs. Catalina a Mojave work perfectly and are still being fully supported with the latest software. Once again using COVID as a defense is nonsensical.
Yep they are. Windows 10 gets frequent feature updates, twice a year I believe. These work on machines going back to 2005/2006, and for people who had Windows 7, Windows 10 was a free upgrade for a deal of time. So yes, Microsoft is giving constant free upgrades to Windows 10 for very old computers. (and 2013/2014 do not qualify as 'very old')I don't think Microsoft is giving constant free upgrades to Windows 10 for very old computers are they?
That's interesting. At the same time:outrageous! This sound just like Microsoft's Windows 10 activity to me and should be boycotted by all of us users accordingly!!!
here's Obdev's response (little snitch dev company) regarding these privacy issues. They phrased it rather nicely. What it basically means, apple is whitelisting all their telemetry communication making it so that no 3rd party app or user can prevent let alone detect it. Network firewall rules must now prevent your Macs from telling Apple and others what Apps you run and when and where. Bypassing VPNs.... really... I'm losing it!

You needed a new machines anyways!apple fanbois: this is not a wide spread problem, this is clearly an attack on apple, apple is numba 1
c) Stop forcing users who rely on software like XCode to update just to get the latest version. If Apple's quality control is so bad that these sorts of issues are slipping through quality control, then Apple needs to a) make it clear that their major updates are major updates, and b) have a warning that updating might cause instability.
Yeah and show me where I stated that 2013/2014 Macs weren't supported. You won't find any post of me stating or suggesting such. If you can't understand what I said then I can't help you any further. Now end of discussion.Still not understanding your point. 2013/2014 MacBook Pro's ARE supported by Big Sur. This, according to Apple. Thus, those systems shouldn't be having an issue like this.
End of discussion.
So have you because that's not what I suggested or said. Oh the saltiness. You seemed to be suggesting that people with 2013/2014 Macs should expect there to be major bugs with Big Sur on their Macs, as if it was their fault for not having a meow modern Mac.
You've missed the point.
This is simply nonsense. If Apple's quality control is so bad that these sorts of issues are slipping through quality control, then Apple needs to a) make it clear that their major updates are major updates, and b) have a warning that updating might cause instability.
Ha, that's not at all what I asked. I asked if Microsoft was giving free OS upgrades, not feature or software updates. Apple has done that since the first release of Mac OS X. Let's see when the next major version of Windows comes out if all Windows users get it free of charge. 🙄Yep they are. Windows 10 gets frequent feature updates, twice a year I believe. These work on machines going back to 2005/2006, and for people who had Windows 7, Windows 10 was a free upgrade for a deal of time. Big Sur is sure looking like a huge headache more and more by the day. First the Apple servers crashed on launch day, and now this debacle... I usually am the first the jump ship to the latest OS, but gonna wait a bit for this one
Correct. I have no idea what you said. And neither do a lot of people here I imagine. So either rephrase it, or just accept that you didn't communicate whatever point you were trying to make very well.Yeah and show me where I stated that 2013/2014 Macs weren't supported. You won't find any post of me stating or suggesting such. If you can't understand what I said then I can't help you any further. Now end of discussion.
you say macOS is dead, but you are hanging around here....so you waste your valuble time on something that is dead in your opinion....
Nothing to say more.
Google Drive Filestream stopped working after the last Mojave update a few days ago. I had to do a Cmd-R reinstall and that fixed it. Quite annoying that I can’t install the most recent security update.I doubt it, you have a 7 year old machine. Things will eventually slow down/not be as well-optimized no matter how you spin it.
