Is the Packages folder you mentioned above from the "macOS High Sierra Patcher.app" or from the "Install macOS High Sierra Beta.app"? And what file(s) should I copy from source to destination?

Having found that patch v.1.1.3 fails to create the "Packages" folder in "/ System / Installation /", I have adopted this solution:

With patch v.1.0b3 I created the installation usb pen (I used this version because it is the one that worked on all developers and public beta)

From it I copied the "Packages" folder by saving it on my desk, following I rebuilt the usb pen with patch v.1.1.3 without worrying about this error

/ Dev / disk2s1 EFI
/ Dev / disk2s2 Apple_HFS / Volumes / InstallESD
Cp: / Volumes / RedUSB32G / System / Installation / Packages: File exists
Cp: / Volumes / InstallESD / Packages: Unable to copy extended attributes to / Volumes / RedUSB32G / System / Installation / Packages: No such file or directory
.................................
Cp: directory / Volumes / RedUSB32G / System / Installation / Packages does not exist

Finished, open the patch I did a copy and paste of the folder "Packages" saved on the desktop in "/ System / Installation /" ......

Tried it worked fine without any problem ..... it's not a solution ...... it's like running the go, but this, allowed me to use patch v.1.1.3 .... ....

I just fixed this issue in version 1.1.4, so this should no longer be necessary.

Both, Developer High Sierra beta 7 and Public Beta 6 are available.

I had to re-download "macOSDeveloperBetaAccessUtility.dmg" from the apple developer site and install it, before High Sierra developer Beta 7 showed as available for download, via regular apple update application.

When machine rebooted it was running the beta 7.

Background:

I installed High Sierra *beta 6* via USB flash drive created with Dosdued1's patcher 1.13.
I used "regular" apple-update process to access, download, and directly install *Beta7*.
Everything seems fully operational.

My previous DP6 install updated normally to DP7 using software update as per supported Mac.
What we need for APFS is a retired or insider efi wizard to patch the firmware updaters for unsupported Macs with the APFS support. Probably never going to happen, so we need some workarounds like those from Czo.

Kind of off-topic, but I definitely miss the old Aqua progress bars in MacOS. The traffic lights and progress bars are very bland now (although I have fixed the traffic lights myself).

Yeah, as strange as it seems, I actually use OS X Mavericks as my main OS... I just like the looks of it too much to upgrade.

you can boot the afps volume if you install the latest clover to the EFI partition. that is what I did so I wouldn't have to use a usb all the time. It takes a few extra seconds to boot because it takes a little bit to default to Clover once it realizes it can't find a drive.
I personally like afps on unsupported ssd Macs. I think it runs more smoothly.

How did you get it to install on the ssd without it failing using afps?

I first installed to an HFS+ formated SSD and verified that the system was OK. After that I converted the volume to APFS using Disk Utility without any problem except that I can not boot APFS in the normal manner. That is expected. I will look at Clover and see if it works for me. Thanks for your suggestion.
I have noticed for macOS High Sierra Developer Beta (17A352a) that I can not enable Trim using trimforce enable and yet trimforce enable now works on supported mac's. I wonder why?

And your traffic lights do look good on my MacPro3,1 with a newly installed High Sierra Beta7, thanks again.🙂

Edit: Bonus whoo-hoo! Just checked and Trim was enabled by default on my new installation.
I have a mix of Samsung, Crucial and Kingston SSD's including a Kingston HyperX predator, all show Trim as enabled.

I saw you mention couple of times now that you “see no real benefit to using APFS as a boot volume”, so I’d like to re-ask @Banan911’s question from few posts before. Would you mind elaborate a bit more as to why that is?

APFS is so much better than HFS+ and has lots of great perks that everyone can benefit from in every day use, not just power users like myself. I would love to see a somewhat reliable and not too fussy method (external USB helper thumb drive is not it) of booting into APFS volumes on unsupported Macs (Early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 here).

Regarding your patcher tool, since you mentioned it also: in my opinion, it would be a good idea for your patcher to make the Recovery volume work by default. I know you don’t consider it an essential part of using Sierra and High Sierra on unsupported Macs, but a lot of people do, rely on it and see it as an integral part of OS install.

Alright, I'll change it to apply the recovery partition patch by default. Also, I have some ideas that may work to get these machines to boot APFS... I'll be experimenting with that over the next few weeks.

Hi. I need help. After install MacOS MBP mid 2009 ( 5,5) starts normally. But when loading line go to 100% notebook freeze. I reboot it, and, it load normally, then black screen and system starts. Is it possible to fix?
And, when I install update via MacAppStore, system will be ok? Or I can take problems?
At the end, can I use APFS? I read few pages before and can see any information. I have HDD disk, but, next time want to take SSD.

I appreciate the response back. But as dosdude1 indicated, I was able to resolve my issue using the 1.1.4 version of his patch tool.

Too good to be true, unfortunately the traffic light mod breaks the SpotLight Preference pane for sure and maybe other things not yet detected. There is no way to add or remove drives from the panel.
I've installed and removed the mod several times just to be sure before posting this.

I have the iMac 8,1. Did you use @dosdude1 Post Install tool, and ensure "Volume Control Patch" was selected? You can try running the Post Install tool again and it should fix the issue. Otherwise you will have to manually replace the "AppleHDA" and "IOAudioFamily" extensions with those from El Capitan. I can walk you through that or provide them for you if necessary.

Only downside is the lack of a bootable Recovery partition, but that's only a minor inconvenience. If you all think this looks like a viable solution, I can implement it into macOS High Sierra Patcher.

Booting from APFS can be enabled without any extra partition. The key is the "com.apple.boot.S" folder on the recovery partition with the correct settings.
