Upgraded the Macbook 5,1 next to my desk overnight.....and I mean overnight since it still has the original 120 GB hard drive in it. Slow as Christmas and no APFS but it made it. I may swap out the drive later but right now, after an install, SIP disable and post install, it seems to be right as rain. I also upgrade my wife's Macbook Air from four years ago which is a supported machine with no issues.

Next stop will be the two Mac Pro 3.1's I have. One is my desktop machine with SoftRAID on a non-boot volume and a separate Fusion Drive boot volume. SoftRAID has already been upgraded to the 5.6.3 version with compatibility for HS. Graphics card is a Nvidia 8800. Should be a smooth, non APFS affair. The other is my household media server with two Drobos, including the new 5D3 running off a USB 3.0 card. Drobo has said that the current software is HS compatible but APFS support will come later....we'll see how that is.

I’m surprised you didn’t put in an SSD 5 years ago, given the speed you’re used to with your other machines. My MacBook5,1 install on SSD took half an hour or so.

Hey @dosdude1, MacBook5,2 owner here. What is the status on the backlight control fix for 10.13? Does replacing the 3 files from 10.12.3 carry over? What about Wi-Fi? Mine has a Broadcom BCM43xx, does that mean that I would lose Wi-Fi if I upgraded to 10.13?

Firstly thanks to DosDude1 for his utility.

I have upgraded my MackBook 5.1 to HS from Sierra (again thanks to DosDude1) and all is working fine. I have now decided to convert my SSD to APFS but I am having an issue. I booted the USB again and unmounted the drive but when I try and convert the drive I get the following error:

The operation could not be completed (com.apple.StorageKit error 118)
Operation failed.

I tried a first aid on the disk and that is fine but it still gives me the conversion error.

Anybody got any ideas what the problem could be ?

Backlight control now works perfectly on that machine. As for WiFi, check your card's ID with those listed on my webpage, that'll tell you whether or not it will work.

According to your tutorial, that is a clean install. What do I do if I want to upgrade to High Sierra on top of my 10.12 Sierra? Can I just straight away use your patcher, download High Sierra from the tab, and then start operation, all done within, without creating a USB stick? Cheers mate.

All you have to do is boot from your USB installer, and proceed through the install selecting the volume containing your Sierra install without erasing it in Disk Utility. This is explained on my webpage.

The Macbook in question was an early attempt to have a computer in a common room for my very young daughter. Now she's 11 and has a older iMac (2008) in her room. It's slow and still running El Cap but I won't bring it to HS since it's one of the few desktop machines on Wifi and HS would break that without help.

As for the Macbook, it's not mainly just a machine to test out stuff like this but I may put it back in production soon as a high resolution music server for the home theater. All I need is a Mac with USB 2.0 for that purpose. Yes it's slow, has a couple of keys missing, the trackpad click function doesn't work but with a wireless keyboard, it should be fine.

But... AMD Radeon HD 7950 -> fan 100% all the time and there is graphical glitch etc..
Boot is slow

I already try to run patcher (post install patch) again and check "Force Cache Rebuild".
Still same issue 🙁

Well, the good news for an iMac is that using a WiFi dongle isn't a big problem if you do decide to upgrade it. But El Capitan is totally fine for the time being as still fully supported by Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, as well as iTunes.

BTW, since you mentioned your daughter: At what age did you think she needed a computer? My daughter is now 5 and I'm thinking our MacBook5,1 or else the MacBookPro5,5 will be hers maybe when she's 7-8. Assuming that High Sierra is the last OS these dosdude1 patcher-assisted computers will ever be able to run without issue, I suspect their useful life could even be another 5 years, because of software/browser compatibility and general performance (with 8 GB RAM and SSD).

My prediction is that Safari and iTunes will be supported on High Sierra until about 2020 or 3 years from now, and that Chrome and/or Firefox may be supported until about 2022 (when my daughter is 10).

Regarding that trackpad, I don't know if you mean it's completely toast or not, but if not completely dead: Trackpad click issues can often be correcting by playing with the depth adjustment screw. It's underneath the battery at the trackpad (of course), and the screw is either a Torx screw or a tri-wing screw. Below are the instructions for the MacBook Pro, and it's mostly the same but even easier for MacBook5,1 since the battery isn't screwed in.

Yep, that's exactly right... Or you can convert the volume before even installing High Sierra. Either way, you won't lose any data.

Hi, I've already installed High Sierra (but didn't have any checkbox to convert to AFPS..) and now I would like to convert my SSD. When I boot from USB and run Disk Tool I can't convert because this option is greyed out. Same thing when I boot in recovery mode from my SSD drive..
Could anyone help me with this?
EDIT: I did an upgrade, not a clean installation, have FileVault turned off.

Success here as well with MacPro 3,1. This is my second update with Dosdude1 methods and thanks. I still have a volume issue when I reboot or wake up where the volume balance is random with volume all the way up. I am pretty sure I selected the volume patch but can I just reboot again from the USB and run the volume patch again? Or do I have a different issue?

Another thing he should check is the condition of the battery (if one is installed). When I got my Macbook 5,1, the trackpad wouldn't click. The battery was bulged, and was pressing on the bottom of the trackpad. I bought a new battery for it, and the trackpad has been working properly ever since.

Same here: on my MacBookPro 5,2, mid 2009, 17", the trackpad seems fully functional. In fact didn't observe a single feature on this laptop which isn't working under HS with APFS - that is really great. I keep testing.
HS with APFS is installed on a USB-connected external Samsung 840 Pro SSD so far. Running stably since days. Looking forward to having the final release on the internal SSD.

Any Mac Pro 3,1 users out there using an SSD as their boot volume and an HDD as their home directory volume running a flashed NVIDIA GTX 680 pull this off successfully? Would High Sierra offer any performance improvements from El Capitan on a machine of this age? I never upgraded to HS usually update every other OS so I don’t have to deal.

The trackpad issue only occurs with the MacBook5,2, NOT the MacBookPro5,2. The trackpad on that machine works perfectly fine under High Sierra.
