But how many favorites written horizontally can you have in a bar, 5,6, 8 maybe ?
This is what I have (and more..). I'm always using Safari in Full Screen.

For me I have this :

And the ability to put folders makes also great vertical menus, I guess also possible in Safari, but no visual distinction between folders and direct links at all ? (in fact just tested and yes there is one, little down arrow)

I still prefer the combo favicons very few letters though, overall less space and quicker visual access for me.
Really wish that would be an option in Safari, then I would probably leave chrome (especially with the almost unusable stupid tab grouping on android, have an android phone these days), but favicons in favorites bar in Safari, I think I switch to iphone + Safari on all devices.

Whoa.. personally that will never work for me. Too convoluted. Too many things going on. I really don’t need all that color to distract me. All I need is a big enough target to tap.

I use Favorites to only access my favorite sites so thing like folder would be too complicated. Any site that I don’t access regularly I just type a few alphabets on the address bar and it will appear.

I do the same, but favicons + 2 or 3 letters takes less space and is more direct for me

The biggest issue is there is no longer an X to close the tab. Only way I've found is to Right Click > Close Tab, making a 1 click process a 2 click one.
when you mouseover, the favicon turns into the close icon. be careful clicking on a tab when you have a lot of other tabs and they get small. you might wipe out the tab you wanted.

Unfortunately the new version of safari in Monterey beta 3 broke gmail for me. When I bring up gmail, none of my labels are listed on the left. Clicking on the show/hide button does nothing. Everything works just fine on chrome and firefox. And it did work ok on safari before the upgrade. Any suggestions?

What’s the difference other than looks? To me having them on the top is worse mainly because if you only have one tab open the tab bar is still there. Is Safari the tab bar only shows up with multiple tabs.
I just liked the fact that they used space that it’s normally completely empty space.
I understand it only saves 50 or so points of screen real estate but I liked the ingenuity.

This change may be more functional in a basic sense but it looks awful. They should just abandon this new UI, scrap tab group, and try again for macOS 13 and iOS/iPadOS 16
Tab groups are the one useful and well done feature in this new version. The rest of the changes were pointless and made using the browser worse.

I am sticking with Catalina - even if it eventually forces me into Windows - as long as they keep those massive, oversized, blinding toolbars (and what's with the inability to move or remove the Filtering icon in Mail?). The display literally hurts my eyes. I went through the insane amount of pain required to revert because Big Sur made some serious interface mistakes, and they seem to have kept it all going into Monterey. Will the most trivial of things - toolbars! - switch me from the Mac after over 30 years?

Apple needs to add where they can get Safari 14 on MacOS 12 Monterey for people who don't like it then everyone will be happy.
