With the macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta, Apple has revamped AirPlay, adding new options for sharing a more limited amount of information on the screen when AirPlaying to an Apple TV.

There are now options to show your entire screen, a specific window or app, or your extended display. Limiting AirPlay to a specific app allows a presentation or photos to be shared on the larger screen of a TV without allowing viewers to see all of the content on a Mac.

In the current version of macOS, Apple allows for mirroring a Mac's display to an Apple TV, but there is no option for sharing just a portion of a display.

The menu allowing for an entire screen or just a window or app to be displayed also appears when connecting a Mac to a TV over HDMI.

macOS Sequoia 15.2 is in beta right now, with Apple planning to release it to the public in early December. The update also adds Apple Intelligence features like Image Playground and ChatGPT Siri integration.

Disappointed that macOS 15.2 doesn’t currently have the new Mail layout like iOS 18.2. Hopefully it comes out in the next beta update and doesn’t get postponed until .3. Currently running the public betas on my iPhone 15 pro max and M3 iMac. Held off on the betas for my M1 Mac mini and M3 MacBook Air and will update when the public release comes out next month. Waiting on the acceptance for image creation right now, hopefully it’ll be soon.

They are FINALLY improving airplay after so many years!!! It really hasn’t changed much after Jobs introduced them 10+ years ago. They are falling behind some of the aspects with regards to continuity and connectivity to their competitors.

Please we need more updates!

Also I will never understand why doesn’t studio display support airplay and a stripped down TVOS with an a13 chip inside. I know it didn’t have wifi chip and antenna but why not add those when you stuff an a13 inside and increase the value proposition? I cannot even use it with my iPhone like any other monitors can.

This is off topic, but am I the only one who didn’t liked the new design?
If I leave out the huge amount of UI issues and only focus on the functionalities:
- The grouping is wrong for 20% of the cases. This is especially annoying for getting 2FA codes. I need to go through each individual categories just to find my 2FA code.
- because of the wrong grouping, I have missed a few emails because they got grouped into the promotion categories.
- a lot of promotions/spam went into my primary.. and I cannot mark those to be grouped into other categories.
- why is the shopping category so prominent?
- why is there an “update” category? Isn’t any email reply an update?
- why can’t we customize the categories with natural language?

iPadOS should add support for extending the display over AirPlay. You can only mirror the iPad display currently, and need to use a USB-C to HDMI cable, or HDMI adapter to extend the display to a TV.

macOS supports either mirroring or extending the display when using AirPlay.
Yeah, and the mirroring behavior is more like iOS rather than MacOS, it’s not a true 1:1 mirror.

It's mainly for web cam and centerstage which the iPhone and iPad already provide. The studio display other than that is a external display. Not equivalent to a iPhone, iPad or Mac where the display output can be mirrored to an airplay capable receiver device. (Apple TV, AVR, or 4K TV examples)

I am also glad we are finally seeing options instead of mirroring the whole OS screen only. :)

I don’t really mind it. After playing around with it for a little bit, I found, at least for my needs, it works perfectly. I’m not really too email heavy, so a lot of my stuff is promotional, and basic school and work stuff. Thankfully, Apple does give the option to revert back to the old way of categorizing Mail if you don’t like the new way.

Great point updates.
Continue to surprise us.

(but don't forget to fix the mountain of bugs)

This would be awesome, sometimes I just want to throw my notes up on another monitor. Now if I’m sitting on the couch, I can throw the notes app up on the Apple TV instead of the entire separate desktop.

This is cool, however more pressing is a return of easy installing of unsigned apps.

Can we disable all this auto sorting nonsense?

One thing I really wish they'd update is airplay mirroring to a Mac. There's no reason it needs to hijack the entire display and system. I propose give me an option to run it in a window like the iPhone Mirroring app.

Isn't that done via Screen Sharing? Mirroring is a twist on the age-old Screen Sharing, which has been supported by macOS for eons.

Finally! Why has it taken this long? Maybe they forgot AirPlay existed

Apple has in recent years had a bad habit of letting key pieces of software remain untouched for absurdly long stretches.

Would be nice to know why this is and even nicer to know that they are planning on fixing it.

Apple is polishing the screen sharing and virtual display technology.

That's really good and very promising IMHO.

This can only mean one thing - they are planning to use that technology for further stuff e.g. a virtual MR headset?
