iPadOS should add support for extending the display over AirPlay. You can only mirror the iPad display currently, and need to use a USB-C to HDMI cable, or HDMI adapter to extend the display to a TV.

macOS supports either mirroring or extending the display when using AirPlay.
I believe we see it in next major update

Am I reading that correctly? This new feature ONLY WORKS WITH APPLE TV set-top boxes - not any device you can currently mirror to (like directly to my TV). If so, it's a useless feature for almost all but niche Mac users.

No, it should work with every AirPlay receiver. Nothing changes in the actual AirPlay protocol, it's only macOS sending a video stream of a different window or screen.

For the last couple of years in Safari on MacOS and iPadOS there is a feature flag that correlate with this feature. I hope it‘ll use for all apps where you can share your screen.

AirPlay has had features removed and added so much over the years, it’s odd overall. It was better back in the day.

This is off topic, but am I the only one who didn’t liked the new design?
If I leave out the huge amount of UI issues and only focus on the functionalities:
- The grouping is wrong for 20% of the cases. This is especially annoying for getting 2FA codes. I need to go through each individual categories just to find my 2FA code.
- because of the wrong grouping, I have missed a few emails because they got grouped into the promotion categories.
- a lot of promotions/spam went into my primary.. and I cannot mark those to be grouped into other categories.
- why is the shopping category so prominent?
- why is there an “update” category? Isn’t any email reply an update?
- why can’t we customize the categories with natural language?
Just like gmail categories, I will turn off this feature.

This destroys headless MacBooks I often have to remote in ona new display to click the set default button

I tried screen sharing "Window or App" but nothing appeared on my TV. After retrying to connect to the Apple TV and entering the 4 digit passcode, I no longer got the prompt asking to show Full Screen, Window or App, or to extend. The screen on my tv went from showing the 4 digit code and just reverts back to the screen saver. Now I can't screen share to my Apple TV! ! !

Anybody else experience this issue?

I think they need to add a reset button so I can try a different selection . . .

My M1 MBP will not show the 15.2 beta. Anyone else have this problem or know what to do about it?

You need to verify under Software Update -> Beta Updates -> either MacOS Sequoia Developer Beta or Public Beta is a choice for your respective Apple Account (previously Apple ID). What MacOS are you using currently?

I'm on 15.1 beta. I have the drop down menu for dev or public beta, nothing shows up for either. Another thing I've tried doing is turning it "off", restart, then turn "on" public beta. Nothing. This is weird.

Thats is weird, how about using safe mode when you power off then on your Mac? There are a few times I turned the dev/beta off, then power Mac off, then power Mac on and then went and turned the account back to dev or PB in beta updates choices. You might repeat the last suggestion more then once from a complete off state with no dev or PB enabled. 15.2 beta 2 unlike the first beta doesn't have a dev only choice that shows up at the bottom right by question mark saying 15.2 developer beta as a additional choice. It now should shows on both dev and beta. As you know its dependent on speed of connection it takes a few mins for it to show not immediately. Also try to run disk utility first aid just for to make sure nothing showing with that before all of this. Might also disconnect external SSDs just in case also.

dev 15.2 Beta 3 is out - maybe you will fare better with it installing that over 15.1?

The feature actually has nothing to do with Apple TV specifically, nor even with AirPlay specifically. It's for any displays you have connected externally, whether wirelessly, through HDMI, etc.
