Yes, we know PCC is secure, verifiable etc... but it's still a real gut punch for some Mac admins that have been dutifully testing betas only to find out this change in an RC and in the developer notes (it was not mentioned in the Appleseed for IT notes at all). While my company allows this, there are many in the HIPAA space that don't have this laissez-faire luxury. And yes, you can clamp down on some AI features via MDM, but it still downloads all the assets. What a waste of bandwidth and storage for the end user if it's disabled and unusable!Apple Intelligence
New Features
- For users new or upgrading to macOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during Mac onboarding. Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices. To disable Apple Intelligence, users will need to navigate to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle. This will disable Apple Intelligence features on their device. (141646607)
This may seem small to some, but it's a very offensive change and shows a complete disregard for their users.
This should NOT default to "on"
Apple is taking 8GB of storage on my device - whether I want AI or not. It is disrespectful. That is why it is offensive. How is it offensive?
What is your issue with it?

Maybe, but people need to have a choice and not forced onto them and it should always be off be default.AI is going to become a core functional part of all devices and platforms, not just Apple.
i only started using a Mac last year after so many years with Windows, I use Android for my phone, and I am not ready to change to Apple for my phone, now if someone offered a decent Linux based phone that I could still use the apps i wanted. Yes, I know Android is Linux based, but you know what i meanI am not too far behind with this notion, but as others have said, not a lot of great alternatives that I know of. I was actually ready to walk away from Apple on my next phone purchase when the original CSAM business came about, and had they not reversed that, my current phone would not be an Apple one.
It’s not about any one thing. It’s lots of little nits, aggravations, impositions, and intrusions that over time push some to the conclusion that the Apple premium price is simply not worth it anymore.
On the AI features themselves, I’m starting to wonder if there might be a market for “AI free” devices, meaning you don’t even give up resources to it if you don’t use it. When everyone else is pushing it so hard, what if Apple could legitimately claim “It’s your device. With us, if you turn AI features off, it really means OFF, and your device will be free of it.” I don’t know about anyone else, but that would get my attention.
Tim has said it takes 7GB of storage, so it is strange you say less than 5GB. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/121115are you sure it's taking up 8GB?
it's less than 5GB on mine
at least I know what it is
there are plenty of parts of macOS I'm not interested in and I don't even know how much space they take up.that's just how it is.
8GB is still ok because Apple iOS is intentionally disabled to prevent true multitasking (unlike android).8GB of ram hasn’t been enough for more then checking your email or reading the news for many many years, in any os

true! I meant to say customer support is worse than the feedback tool in taking complaints and the complaints being fixedI did use the abyss that is the Apple Feedback tool. It won't change anything.
This is with Apple Intelligence disabled - and having never been enabled on the device...Tim has said it takes 7GB of storage, so it is strange you say less than 5GB. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/121115View attachment 2474843
👍🏻💯 Agreed, it is just plain rude (and I am disappointed at this initiative, considering that I only switched to Apple from Windows a few months ago). For me the issue is simply the wasted storage space if I choose not to initiate AI (which I don't, at this time).Apple is taking 8GB of storage on my device - whether I want AI or not. It is disrespectful. That is why it is offensive.
so turning a feature you explicitly turned off back on every time it updates is 'respecting your wishes' in your world. ok.You can go in and turn it off, your wishes are respected.
i explicitly turned off apple intelligence already. turning a feature back on that a user doesn't want with potentially every new update is 'not offensive' to you as a user? How is it offensive?

nope. i find it offensive.annoying sure. offensive is a little strong.
macOS has lots of features I don't want, I just don't use them.
they're saying 'no, we don't care you turned it off, and we're going to turn it back on potentially every time you update.
and this isn't some little utility on the device that i can just 'not use' if i don't want
we don't know either way. what i do know is that i did choose to not use it by turning it off. and apparently it's going to turn itself back on. past behaviour indicates future behaviour.do we know that it is going to be turned on with every update?
you can not use it by turning it off
You didn't turn it off, it was a beta feature you had to turn on. It has now moved into new phase.so turning a feature you explicitly turned off back on every time it updates is 'respecting your wishes' in your world. ok.
i guess y'all can contort yourself for whatever logic you want. sounds to me like you'd make excuses if they also made it so you couldn't even turn it off at all since its a 'new phase' and all.You didn't turn it off, it was a beta feature you had to turn on. It has now moved into new phase.
