All these comments but no one has mentioned the typo of macOS 18.3 here:

Apple Intelligence

New Features

  • For users new or upgrading to macOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during Mac onboarding. Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices. To disable Apple Intelligence, users will need to navigate to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle. This will disable Apple Intelligence features on their device. (141646607)
Yes, we know PCC is secure, verifiable etc... but it's still a real gut punch for some Mac admins that have been dutifully testing betas only to find out this change in an RC and in the developer notes (it was not mentioned in the Appleseed for IT notes at all). While my company allows this, there are many in the HIPAA space that don't have this laissez-faire luxury. And yes, you can clamp down on some AI features via MDM, but it still downloads all the assets. What a waste of bandwidth and storage for the end user if it's disabled and unusable!

Apple is taking 8GB of storage on my device - whether I want AI or not. It is disrespectful. That is why it is offensive.

are you sure it's taking up 8GB?

it's less than 5GB on mine

at least I know what it is

there are plenty of parts of macOS I'm not interested in and I don't even know how much space they take up.that's just how it is.

AI is going to become a core functional part of all devices and platforms, not just Apple.
Maybe, but people need to have a choice and not forced onto them and it should always be off be default.
i myself am fed up with things benign forced onto us, like in the U.K with Loyalty cards and the way they are being used to reduce prices. But that is another thing.

We should always have a choice. but you are rightm, Ai seems to be in everything, i have even seen a printer that says on the box AI .

I am not too far behind with this notion, but as others have said, not a lot of great alternatives that I know of. I was actually ready to walk away from Apple on my next phone purchase when the original CSAM business came about, and had they not reversed that, my current phone would not be an Apple one.

It’s not about any one thing. It’s lots of little nits, aggravations, impositions, and intrusions that over time push some to the conclusion that the Apple premium price is simply not worth it anymore.

On the AI features themselves, I’m starting to wonder if there might be a market for “AI free” devices, meaning you don’t even give up resources to it if you don’t use it. When everyone else is pushing it so hard, what if Apple could legitimately claim “It’s your device. With us, if you turn AI features off, it really means OFF, and your device will be free of it.” I don’t know about anyone else, but that would get my attention.
i only started using a Mac last year after so many years with Windows, I use Android for my phone, and I am not ready to change to Apple for my phone, now if someone offered a decent Linux based phone that I could still use the apps i wanted. Yes, I know Android is Linux based, but you know what i mean

So while I do use a Mac computer, I don't think I am in what you call their ecosystem, to me, it is a computer with a different OS that I use to run the software i want to use and this is one of the reason why i went from Windows, because Microsoft kept piling it up with bloat and making it almost impossible to opt out of their MS account and their rubbish AI.

While i disagree with Apple making AI default, if that is what they do, at least it can be turned off with a click of a mouse, trying doing that in Window

Ai have been without us for years, we have washing machines that can wash your clothing according to how much you put in, maybe that is AI, in some way. Computer games have had AI for years. Smart speakers are AI, but pretty basic.
But Ai is not needed in everything and it should never be forced onto people
i have a few echo dots around the house, that is my choice, but I don't choose to have AI on my computer as I have no need for it.

Tim has said it takes 7GB of storage, so it is strange you say less than 5GB. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/121115

👍🏻💯 Agreed, it is just plain rude (and I am disappointed at this  initiative, considering that I only switched to Apple from Windows a few months ago). For me the issue is simply the wasted storage space if I choose not to initiate AI (which I don't, at this time).

i explicitly turned off apple intelligence already. turning a feature back on that a user doesn't want with potentially every new update is 'not offensive' to you as a user?

annoying sure. offensive is a little strong.

macOS has lots of features I don't want, I just don't use them.

nope. i find it offensive.

it is a feature with an on/off switch. i literally have already turned it off. they're saying 'no, we don't care you turned it off, and we're going to turn it back on potentially every time you update.' that is offensive to me as a user and a customer.

and this isn't some little utility on the device that i can just 'not use' if i don't want. it will by default rewrite notifications of personal messages and news headlines in potentially upsettingly incorrect ways. this isn't just for me, everyone's older or less savvy family members are about to start asking why their phone suddenly said someone was injured or died and when they clicked in they couldn't find any information about it.

this isn't some important security feature. this is them desperate to bolster usage metrics on a feature that you MUST be aware is divisive amongst people.

its fine that you don't care that this is how companies treat their users now, but i do.

do we know that it is going to be turned on with every update?

you can not use it by turning it off
we don't know either way. what i do know is that i did choose to not use it by turning it off. and apparently it's going to turn itself back on. past behaviour indicates future behaviour.

so turning a feature you explicitly turned off back on every time it updates is 'respecting your wishes' in your world. ok.
You didn't turn it off, it was a beta feature you had to turn on. It has now moved into new phase.

i guess y'all can contort yourself for whatever logic you want. sounds to me like you'd make excuses if they also made it so you couldn't even turn it off at all since its a 'new phase' and all.

show me a a screen that says 'do you want to turn this on?' with a yes/no option. not doing that is wrong, especially with generative AI. i'll die on that hill.
