This one hangs on "verifying" for me. Anybody else have that issue?

Last night I used the link in post 155 to upgrade from El Capitan to Sierra on my Mid 2012 MBP Retina. I thought it was hanging too, but turned out I just needed to open the file through Finder (I believe that opens it as an Admin). Once I did that, no problems. Thanks to whoever for that link!

Pretty sure I did open it through finder, but maybe I didn't do it right…

Mission accomplished: after installing this command-line tool, the command
mas install 1127487414
purchased*, downloaded, and installed version 10.12.6 of

which then verified

[jtm@socrates ~]$ codesign -dv /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app
Executable=/Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/MacOS/InstallAssistant_springboard
Identifier=com.apple.InstallAssistant.Sierra
Format=app bundle with Mach-O thin (x86_64)
CodeDirectory v=20200 size=321 flags=0x2200(kill,library-validation) hashes=4+3 location=embedded
Signature size=4605
Info.plist entries=30
TeamIdentifier=K36BKF7T3D
Sealed Resources version=2 rules=7 files=137
Internal requirements count=1 size=124

and worked

correctly.

* By which I mean, the program not only downloaded Sierra, it did so using the Apple-supplied App Store frameworks in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks, resulting in an application bundle containing a properly-signed MAS receipt linked to my Apple ID.
[doublepost=1508018801][/doublepost]I just tried and received the error message stating "Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID" Could someone else try?

This worked perfectly for me - thanks so much! Homebrew is also a great tools as well!

This sucks, Doesn't High Sierra break compatibility with a number of older pro-apps? I need to reinstall Sierra on a few systems but now I can't re-dowload it? wtf...

Thanks, I'm downloading now for later installation, but is there different versions for different computers? I'll keep a copy on a back up drive and go from there.

You absolute legend! Tried the methods mentioned earlier, which didn't work for the reasons mentioned earlier. :)

Given that's downloading through the MAS, it should be fine. I'll just obviously make sure to backup the installer if I can before installing.

I need to upgrade from Yosemite as the latest version of Safari I can install is now rarely supported. I don't want to install High Sierra, as that breaks Parallels unless I upgrade that to the brand new version. But I just upgraded Parallels to the previous version as I needed to install Windows 10. And I needed to install Windows 10 because the office VPNs no longer worked with 8.1.

Le sigh... Hard to know which is better: upgrade, and everything breaks. Or don't upgrade, and everything breaks.

This is so depressing. Apple, why do you fight your users like this? Being able to install older OS's is essential for many reasons, not least running old machines or older applications. First signing on iOS and now this move?!

E.g. I have a mission critical business app on iOS which is 32 bit. Yes it would be nice if it were updated to 64 bit but it's not going to happen in this case, yet it's the backbone of my
business. So I'm stuck at iOS 10. And if I have to restore my phone from a backup I'm screwed :-/.

Equally our desktop machines run a vastly complicated set of audio and video plugins. Just one of them not being compatible with high sierra means I can't load up older work.

For professional work we need an option to maintain a system with an older OS. Please rethink your philosophy here.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner you can backup your whole system 1:1 on one or more disks of your choice. ;)

I do this before updating to a new version of OSX, and do also a backup of my IOS-gear (iPad, iPhone) before updating IOS.

If you do so, you have an instantly booting backup and never-ever problems.

The "trick" is to backup FIRST and then giving your iPhone, iPad oder disk under OSX a new name!

If you do so, neither CCC nor TimeMachine will alter or delete your old backup, but they will backup completely (!) your system (which is a "new" one for CCC or TimeMachine) .
Logically, this is like beginning a new first backup - this will take space on your backup disk as well as it will take many hours. But you will never ever be in a situation like now....

not a big deal. it's still available, just hidden from users. here's a direct link to Sierra
http://osxapps.itunes.apple.com/app...-c51c-c3c1fececb99/jze1425880974225146329.pkg

Hi - thanks for providing the pointer. I downloaded this. I bypassed the Security and Privacy check in System Preferences to enable running the file. When I try to run it, I get the following error:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.)
Couldn't open "jze1425880974225146329.pkg".

Do I have to move the pkg somewhere for this to work, or is there something else I'm doing wrong? I'm trying to reinstall Sierra on a very unstable machine and adding High Sierra to the mix doesn't seem like a smart idea...

This method was listed as a possible solution just after High Sierra was released, when Apple stopped providing a direct download of the Install OS X Sierra .app

TBH, the .pkg option is tedious, and prone to failure ;/

The .app was still available (though somewhat hidden), and can be (officially) downloaded directly from here:

Following the release of macOS High Sierra, Mac users have discovered that Apple is no longer listing previous operating system updates in a user's Purchased tab in the Mac App Store.

Neither macOS Sierra nor macOS High Sierra show up in the Purchased list, suggesting the updates are no longer tied to an Apple ID account. Previous Mac software updates were linked to an Apple ID account and updating required an Apple ID and password, something that could be a hassle when a Mac changed ownership.

An Apple support document on reinstalling apps confirms that the change to remove macOS Sierra and High Sierra from the Purchased tab was intentional.

"macOS Sierra or later doesn't appear in the Purchased tab," reads the document.

In the case of macOS Sierra, the change means that there's no way for Mac users to download macOS Sierra should they want to downgrade from High Sierra for some reason.

OS X El Capitan, OS X Yosemite, OS X Mavericks, and earlier updates are all tied to a user account and listed in the Mac App Store. Apple has also made a link to the OS X El Capitan update available through a support document, but no similar support document is available for macOS Sierra.

[doublepost=1509755504][/doublepost]Was so happy to find the solution to upgrading to OS Sierra but............ after trying to download from the link

http://osxapps.itunes.apple.com/app...-c51c-c3c1fececb99/jze1425880974225146329.pkg
I am back to square one. After 16 min. download message reads FAILED. Tried again and again, same message. So is there any hope to get it somehow?

I stumbled across this post because I thought it was time to download all the installers again once and for all. Much to my surprise, Sierra was missing. I am still running El Capitan for compatibility with design software, but figured I should archive them as I work in deploying Macs in enterprise environments.

Anyways, took a stab at it - https://itunes.apple.com/app/os-x-sierra/id1127487414?mt=12
I modified a link that Apple posted about El Capitan Downloads that linked to the app store. This link worked for me.

Edit: apparently my response was a bit late. Now if one of you could help me re-download OS X Lion, that would be great, as now I can't even download it due to my current OS being "too new."

This will only work if you have downloaded Sierra before in AppStore. (look here: https://github.com/mas-cli/mas/issues/85)

I found the solution to be quite simple. Just open that link to AppStore:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-sierra/id1127487414?mt=12

And it will point you out to Sierra, which you will be able to download even if it is not in your "purchased" list!
