See, MacOS 14 upgrade has also broken the quote facility on Macrumours :) #151 refers. It is not affecting everyone but...

System 7. Oh a more innocent age for sure.

Maybe something on Tuesday?

After updating to 14.4, my 2019 MacBook Pro took F-O-R-E-V-E-R to wake up and connect with the external monitor (about 20–30 seconds). Sometimes, accessing the external hard drive, especially the larger ones, takes longer and longer.

Already fed up...

For my usage its running fine on my mac Mini M2 with the Apple Studio monitor, I've had one glitch when I rebooted and the keyboard and mouse were not recognised, switching them both on and off cured that and its been fine since. External SSD works fine and printer works fine, but obviously if any of the list of issues affect your workflow then don't update but also the list of security patches for this update was huge (see below post) so I do like to keep my mac protected.

Users should not be playing a game of hit or miss with each update though and never have to compromise security over major bugs. Apple really need to slow the update cycle on whatever version is coming next and go back to a two year update routine, like in the days of Snow Leopard (that was buggy as hell at release though) nobody is rushing for a new macOS variant every year with such minor changes let alone new versions where you get articles basically saying to compromise security like this one so Jave etc works. Maybe Apple should seperate feature updates and security patching? What happened to this release is weird, it appears 14.4 was actually less buggy before public release acording to many beta testers, so you cant even rely on testing anymore to make sure what you get is the same as what you tested it seems.

Had to downgrade my MacBook Air M1 to 14.3.1 with IPSW Firmware Restore. Really sucks, but my Magic Mouse and keyboard kept losing connection with 14.4.

You could be sure that if Apple does have some poor intern trawling social media and forums for "sentiment" they probably wouldn't incorporate "There is a growing sentiment of unhappiness with Apple's OS upgrades and reliability with some calls being made for senior management including the CEO to be dismissed due to their alleged incompetent leadership and supervision."

:)
Luckily you are spot on with, "some poor intern" we can call them Siri.., rather than an incredibly competent AI. Although I suspect rather than training AI to crush QI/QC and help developers spot sub-optimal code before committing it they would likely train it to interpret social media sentiment. ;) <- if this emoji were better quality everything would be right in the universe.

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but there is a serious bug in 14.4 relating to zooming in fullscreen continuously with the pointer. If I zoom in with two fingers upwards on the trackpad plus a key on the keyboard, whenever I move the pointer, it snaps back out to show the full screen. Because I’m a low vision person, I had to go back to an earlier version of macOS as I couldn’t use it like this.

Guys, I need some advice. It's really getting on my nerves.
I have reset my computer to 14.3.1 - but right now a popup appears that the new update to 14.4 will be installed today. How can I prevent this?

Which dock do you use?
Caldigit TS3 Plus. It's been quite solid. It's currently $200 on Amazon -- pricey for a Thunderbolt 3 dock but I got it with a short-lived deal for $165 a few months back. That's still expensive for an older product but it works well. I'm driving a 4k monitor at 60 Hz and a 2K monitor at 165 Hz with my M1 Pro through it, which should cover me for at least a few more years.

Java started process hung/abend issues with 14.3.

Extra thanks to Apple for removing the OS backup from TimeMachine - I would have downgraded to 14.2 but that is not possible.

The problem is that with each version dozens of small bugs appear, which are then never fixed. And even if you upgrade to a three-year-old version that already only receives security patches, you will likely encounter new unfixed problems. And every year it gets worse in terms of attention to detail. And soon another redesign disaster awaits us...

I'll never forget the disappointment I felt at the Big Sur announcement. I just wanted to hear Craig say they're working on stability, on refinement to the existing system that was great but just needed bug fixing.

"It's our biggest interface overhaul in years!"

So they threw away the well thought out proven design, and ignored most of the bugs, and added a bunch of new ones.

And they'll just keep doing it. Nobody wants to work on anything that's "done" and management doesn't incentivize anyone to do it.

Nope, but it is hardly more than a minor inconvenience, especially in light of the issues some say they are having. Seriously, how long did it take you? Way down on the list. Other issues are preventing some from getting their work done. I don't think reinstalling a printer is close to being on the same level.
the issue I take (by the way I'm not the person reinstalling printers, that's another commenter) is that you hop on a post about "reasons not to update" and you're here running defense, saying "how long did that take you" is for sure a peanut gallery comment when the whole purpose of this thread is listing the "reasons not to update". Why are you running defense?

What the crap is wrong with MacOS Developer's these days?
The OS team is busy trying to program using the limited IOS developer tools for the desktop? Busy refining MacOS EMOJI as the new next-gen operating system and dumbing down everything else to the capacity of a whelk.

I don't know. but whatever they have for supervision and management/directoral strategy/planning sucks balls in my most humble opinion.

That is when the company is not trying to alienate as many people as possible, whether users or regulators [who are immune to lobbying largesse, as is the American Way!].

Hi - don't know if this is relevant or not, but I just upgraded to Somona 14.4 and only then spotted this discussion about not upgrading :( yet. Anyways, an older application which prompted me to open Rosetta in order to use it, opened OK and I started using it. A little while later the application crashed. Why am I telling you this? I went to the Crash Reports via console was happily scrolling through the report - then it just disappeared! This was about 1 week after the initial crash - is there a time limit on the amount of time that a crash report is held by the MacOS 14 before it is deleted. I went to find the actual .ips file - but it was nowhere on the HD.

I realise this probably isn't important, and might not be relevant but just thought I'd mention it as it seemed a but odd to me that the file just vanished while I was viewing it.

It can only get worse.
Dear God no...There's already the suspicion that Cookie & Co are dumbing down stuff to "IOS-like" without the feature set to support it, [see PadOS/Wasted opportunities].

And to think once Apple strived to lead the pack, break barriers and "just work".

Oh such naive times.
