The new UI seems to be most successful perhaps on macOS (though I haven't used it). I like that folders themselves are coloured rather than adding coloured dots, this instantly appears inevitable.
Every time I use a "Label" and give something a different dot I always think how assign it is. This also begs the question, are we just able to change the color of folders or can we right click and change colors of files too?

"Clear" mode and the new default should be hybridized. All those white logos on transparent backgrounds could be made full color, while the background stays transparent. So the Music app logo could be two red notes, the Facetime camera icon could be green...

My biggest wish for Mail is to automatically delete or at least send to trash, any mail from blocked accounts. I don’t need them going to Junk, just get rid of them. Why is this so hard?
That's super easy to do. Create a group of blocked contacts. Set up a rule that automatically deletes any message from anyone in that group.

Done.

Color folders a feature from System 7.5 in 1996. I think folders even had customizable icons then
Back then, you could label a folder which would change its color. At some point, they switched to using dots instead of coloring the whole folder. At first, I hated it because it wasn't as blatantly obvious. Then I realized you could have multiple labels on files and folders now which made it more useful in some cases.

If they keep the dots AND allow colors AND allow sorting based on either, well, that would be awesome.

I'll be curious to try out transparency mode. I notice the default wallpaper they show is very unlike for Sequoia in that it's much "quieter" which is likely necessary when using transparent icons/controls. So I'll be interested to see if they have some tricks up their sleeves to make them also work with a noisier, more natural, wallpaper.

I really hope in OS 26 Apple fixes the bug with Wallpaper on different desktops. I have 10 desktops and I like for each one to have a different wallpaper. For some reason, it changes back to the default wallpaper after a few days.

Remains to be clearified. Perhaps dots remain for files.

Pretty sure that you could have custom folder icons before Mac OS X, I remember making my Macintosh HD an indigo iBook to match my machine and they took that away in X
I'm at Monterey still, and just to be clear (I really didn't know), you cannot change a folder icon in MacOS X? (get info and copy/paste an icon)

This is an abomination

Right click and then choose 'Customise folder...' it will only let you choose from system icons / symbols (though there are many) or emoji. No option to choose your own picture.
Ok, I guess I'm just catching on that this is really how locked down it is? So now, all we can do is add emojis or symbols to folders and we can't use our own images like we've been able to since the dawn of time (Well, decades)?

I do not have the beta installed, but does this mean that we're going to be unable to just paste an image onto the folder icon in the "Get Info" screen?
That is horrible if so!

It is a UI nightmare. Tech support is going to pull their hair out.
Just look at this insane version. Who in their right mind tought this would be a nice touch???

The menubar should ALWAYS be configurable to be a no-go area for anything else - no windows allowed into that rectangle, if it isn't going to be a default.

The menubar should ALWAYS also allow a background color if wanted by the user as well. I hate the transparent menu, don't have the option on now and will find a workaround if they actually release the final it like this.

I remember many wallpapers that had a black stripe at the top of them when the original transparent option for the menubar came out, it looks like that's the really unfortunate future for many of us?

The menubar can be hidden at all times, like when you use full screen. This makes windows go all the way "up" into the menu bar area. If you then move the mouse to the top, the menu bar becomes visible (well, sorta) and that is what gives that horrible mess.

I don't hate it. (Don't love it, either). It reminds me of those old text-heavy magazine ads, where you notice very small print that gently draws your focus. "Follow" is anchored to the dark icons next to it. You know there's text, but you don't know what it says until you look directly.

Does the text change its properties on hovering? Or even bringing the mouse close?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but you can already change the icon of your Macintosh HD, as well as other volumes, folders and file, in the current macOS (File > Get Info, select the icon in the top-left, and paste the new icon).

You can copy icons from the Get Info screen of other items in the Finder, or open any image file, Edit > Select All, and copy the image and use that.

Yeah, I was just able to do it in Sequoia. I must be thinking of something else. Mac OS X came out a long time ago 😅

Is the actual tint colour customisable or does it just match the desktop pic? Was thinking Matrix Green...

So have they preserved the custom image option in Tahoe? Or is it prebaked icons only?

IIRC you've always been able to do it with folders, but the HD and other system icons needed a third-party tool (at one stage, anyway). That may have since changed.
