i think it makes sense as is; for example, someone checking their inbox, and deleting what they want to delete, as they scroll thru new mail.

what you want is an option, and if apple isn't offering that, you can use one of the other mail apps you referenced.
Or, I can disagree with you and note to Apple (FB10280669) that this is a privacy concern. I'm not interested so much as gaining an option, as I am noting to Apple that not everyone sees it to be appropriate to automatically open another (potentially very private!) email.

ok, just trying to help. you have options, as you mentioned.

take a poll here; do others feel the same way? either way, i doubt apple will change this (or offer such an option); they can't, obviously, cater to every individual's preferences (altho more options in general would be great).

Well, to be fair here, only you and I have 'weighed in' on this. So, I'd say it's 50/50 at this point. If I remember correctly, though, the default behavior pre iOS 13 (when they re-did the Mail app) was to return to the list, not open the next email. I know it was like that on iPhones at one point, though.

I've recently stopped using Spark and am using going back & forth between using Edison & Apple's Mail app on macOS, iOS & iPadOS. Every app has their 'issues' I guess ;)
