Searched everywhere trying to get rid of Google Updater. CleanMyMac X got rid of it and others and no more notifications

Yup, been affected by this too. I don't have a lot of apps installed. And just recently had to wipe my mac studio for other reasons. Just before doing so, I wasn't having this issue, so it seems pretty recent in my case on 13.2. I was on 13.1 before having to wipe and reload everything. Annoying, but for me not so much.... YET!! :(

be very careful with apps like this. It's saved my bacon but also ruined a whole machine. With great power comes great...riskability :)

I had filed a bug report with Apple, and they shared that they are aware and working on it. They recommended this as a workaround:

1) Open Terminal and enter: $ sfltool resetbtm
2) Reboot your device

I just did it and it seems to have cleared it up.

omg I have been searching high and low for a solution to this. every morning i am greeted by a dozen notifications that logitech has added background items. it drives me bananas.

This should have been fixed in 13.2 as it was reported a while ago. The fix listed here has been hit-and-miss according to the sites it came from, so like others I'll wait for the official fix.

Numerous Mac users are repeatedly encountering a bug in macOS Ventura that throws up Login Items notifications for various background app processes every time they start up their machine, even when the processes in question have been disabled.

background-items-notifications.jpg

If notification previews are disabled (via System Settings -> Notifications -> Show Previews) the annoying notifications appear as "Login Items." If previews are enabled, the notifications are labelled "Background Items Added" and contain the message "[app/process name] added items that can run in the background. You can manage this in Login Items Settings."

Curiously, there is no option in System Settings -> General -> Login Items to remove background items added to macOS by installed apps. Users can only disable listed items by toggling switches. Doing this however seems to have no impact on the notifications, and in some cases can cause more to appear.

Scouring the complaints across Reddit, Twitter, Apple Support Community discussions, and various other app-specific forums, app processes such as Google Updater, Adobe CC Helper, and Dropbox are repeatedly cited as culprits, but these only appear to be referenced more often because they are popular apps with background processes. Almost any third-party background process can seemingly be referenced in the persistent Login Items notifications.

In all but a minority of cases, trashing or uninstalling the related apps does not fix the problem, and if the notifications do subsequently disappear, reinstalling the app usually brings them back. Some users have even erased their Mac and reinstalled macOS Ventura to defeat the bug, but are then hesitant to install the associated apps.

Only a few users have been successful at ridding their Mac of the notifications by carrying out the following actions, although caution should be applied and users do so at their own risk.
  1. Open Finder, then select Go -> Go to Folder... in the menu bar.
  2. Copy and paste the following address into the input field and press Enter: ~/Library/LaunchAgents
  3. A Finder window will open at the LaunchAgents folder. Show the items as a list organized by name, then search for the app or developer name associated with the process that's causing the Login Items notifications.
  4. Delete the .plist file, then empty the Trash.
  5. Restart your Mac.
  6. If the above steps don't work, look in the ~/Library/LaunchDaemons folder. If there are launch daemons in there associated with the app/developer, delete those too, empty Trash, and restart.
Based on reports, the bug has been around since early beta versions of macOS Ventura, but there have been more frequent incidences reported on Macs running macOS 13.1 and later. Apple is seemingly aware of the problem, but has not commented.

Have you been affected by the Login Items notifications bug? If so, have you found a solution that worked for you? Let us know in the comments.

Well at least I know I'm not going crazy! This has recently been happening to me every few hours and although it's annoying, it's not too much of a problem. I hope Apple fixes this.

I'm having another notifications issue in Ventura: none of them will disappear. Slack or Mail will throw up a notification and it just stays there. No X to close it, and clicking the notification itself doesn't open the associated app. If I toggle on Do Not Disturb, the notification is hidden but comes back as soon as I toggle it off again. The only way to actually get rid of any notification is to quit and reopen whatever app put it up to begin with.

edit: a restart seems to have fixed it but yeesh

Hey! That’s Dave and me from Twitter. Pretty cool!

Too bad these steps have to be done after each Edge update. From my experience, it shows up again after each update.

I'm so glad I stayed on Monterey. I might just skip Ventura altogether unless it impacts any of the ecosystem features while my other devices are on iOS 16.

I gave it a try, and what it did was to reset all "Allow in Background" tasks listed in the System Preferences Login Items pane. After applying the command and rebooting, I turned off the Google Updater, and macOS no longer notifies me that said process tries to add background tasks. So, this seems to work at the moment. Google Updater notifications used to pop-up around 5 times a day, and two times at startup if I rebooted.

EDIT: Rebooted three times on purpose just to check, and it came back haunted.

Only if you delete the whole folder. MR is recommending to only delete the agents/daemons associated with the notifications you don't want.
If you delete LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons, doesn't it keep software from loading that you actually might need?

I have this bug. Didn't realise it was a bug tbh thought it was something new in Ventura. I'll just wait until they fix it.

Man,you guys must reboot all the time for this to really bug you. It *does* happen to me as well, but I haven't rebooted in over a week since updated to Ventura (using OCLP no less).

I literally run into this bug yesterday on my dad's iMac. There was also a process that was trying to add "open" to the start up processes, too... Yeah, I disabled that, but I think there's something bad on his computer.

Not had this bug but I have nothing in launch agents and I certainly don’t stick stuff like edge or chrome etc on my machine

Why is it anytime I feel ready to update the OS, another article highlighting more bugs arrives?

It must be another sign to just stick with Big Sur - rock solid since Day 1 on my iMac.

I don't even have a "~/Library/LaunchDaemons" folder, and my "~/Library/LaunchAgents" folder does have any .plist files for the two notifications I'm getting on my MacBook Pro (Krisp Technologies and Microsoft AutoUpdate).

This is not a bug - it works exactly as intended. Most of this stuff shouldn't have been launched at start-up and all that has changed is Apple warning us about it.
It is most defiantly a bug. These notifications should only be triggering on first installation. However, it appears the notifications are being triggered if the LaunchDameon is updated OR the scipt/app being called by the LD is updated. That is unexpected. Apple is aware and will likely fix it.
