I have a 2021 16 inch MacBook Pro configured with M1 Max and 32 GB RAM.
I have MacOS Ventura 13.1

I get hangs which can last between 1-4 seconds very, VERY often. Sometimes (but not always) the beachball appears as well.
I think it might be caused by Xcode, but I am not sure. I have noticed the issue can be easily reproduced by creating a new file in Xcode. Then the system hangs for a couple of seconds.
But I am getting these lags in other applications as well, e.g. when scrolling in Firefox, when writing a message in Slack. But I do have Xcode open at all times - as I am a developer.

Has anyone noticed this issue before? It's driving me crazy.

worth a call to apple perhaps, to get 'official' support for the issue. and, as a test, what happens if xcode is not open?

Experiencing similar issues. Makes you feel like you have a very old laptop barely capable of performing everyday tasks. Also MacBook's battery is draining quickly.

I came here just to see if it's safe yet to upgrade to 13.1 with an M1 MBP. I guess not!

Yes, exactly. I get about 4 hours of battery life with Xcode open.
Glad to hear I am not the only one, it means this is a software issue. My laptop is already out of warranty.

i have same issue with a client. i do computer networking and i have a couple of people that use macs. I have 2 that are on Ventura and both have problems.
one has similar issues. hangs up and shows not responding on chrome and safari. mac mail open up blank email message and hangs. she has to reboot to start working again. happens a couple times a day. she is on wifi and they use a airport extreme. The Mac is brand new last month with M1 chip. i have tried removing everything she moved from old mac and updating all programs. no luck.
Apple told her to restore to blank OS. looks like that didn't resolve from ElCidRo??

I also did clean install, no changes.

I only started getting the issue after I updated to Ventura. I have been leaving activity monitor open and it seems that it is a memory issue becuase when it hangs it says n/a. I have the 32GB M1 Max and I am in the process of downgrading back to Monterrey because it ran perfect until this update. Apple is no help and want to send me a refurbished piece of junk when it’s clearly a software issue

Any screenshots from Activity Monitor perhaps?
Even if you force quit the app that’s hanging, the next app just starts hanging and sometimes it will recover. Most times I have to reboot and considering I’m a mac repair business it doesn’t look good when my own M1 Max laptop needs to be constantly rebooted. Ohh and a bunch of stupid airplay problems, but that doesn’t affect my work.

I also did clean install, no changes.
Try downgrading back to Monterrey as that is what I am in the process of doing. Actually in the process of restoring my data so I will have to see if the problem is fixed over the next week because I would get a few days here an there. If I get more than a week I will be able to confirm it’s a stupid software issue and I f#cking hate Ventura anyway.

I've noticed a huge slowdown with my M1 Max with Ventura compared to Monterey. Apps used to open pretty much instantly and now...not so much.

The speed bump with the M1/M1 Max compared to Intel chips was so dramatic and now I feel like all of that progress has been wiped away with Ventura.

Seems like a mixed bag of reports with clean installs. I'd like to know if anyone else has solved this without downgrading.

To everyone reading this thread...went looking through the forums to try to find a solution and came across this which was to fix slow write/read speeds with Ventura:

HERE IS THE SOLUTION:
just quit your mac - hold down power button till you see the two options and click on "macintosh hd" it will restart your mac.

Amazingly, after doing this hard reset opening apps is quick again as it was with Monterey. Give it a go.

I don’t think there is anything we can do other than downgrade until they fix the issue, but since “only a small percentage of people are affected” that it’s not high on their to do list. So far I have not had the issue since downgrading, but it hasn’t been 24 hours yet. I did have some weird issues, but once I deleted iMovie, pages, numbers and keynote. Reinstalled from the App Store and did all system updates with the exception of Ventura obviously. Check back with me in a few days to confirm the problem is fixed because it felt like I had a failing mechanical drive on a 2010 💻 and I have 32GB memory paired with M1 Max. It ran great until I updated and the only reason I waited this long was because I was hoping Apple would fix it. Make sure to do a Time Machine backup so you don’t lose any information. Wow after the reset I posted above it is like night and day. I am a happy M1 Max owner again and no other issues with Ventura now.

I've tried this now, but this did not fix it for me :(

EDIT: I might have spoken too soon. After Xcode finished resolving all SPM dependencies, everything seems to be fast now. Including creating new files and editing them quickly straight after. Which was really slow before the restart.

I will test this for a few more days and report back. Thanks for posting this!!

Yeah this happened to me too. I decided that over the Christmas break I'd do a totally fresh install and it seemed to have helped in a big way.
When you say totally fresh install what do you mean?
Just an "Erase All Content and Settings" from System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset?
Or something more?

In my case I tried only the above and then reinstalled everything. But maybe it would be worth wiping Ventura OS and reinstalling it.

I've never tried that feature - I go into recovery options, and wipe the entire drive, and reinstall macOS from there. Doesn't get any cleaner than that!

There seems to problem in Software that still is Intel ONLY even is this day, that also seems to large programs STILL INTL only needs to be expunged Fromm the Mac World! We are in Arm world now for 3 years now and STILL haven't changed then release you code to the world, others will pick up and make at least Universal!

I will try that too next week perhaps. Thanks!

I have had this problem since Ventura. It only happens when my Time Capsule is doing a TM backup i.e. every hour or so. I am unable to open any new page in Safari, my Mail shows only blank pages and other progs like MSWord run much slower than usual. Once the backup is completed, things return to normal but only until the next TM backup. I will try Joshualz's solution when I get a chance.

Have you heard of the app TimeMachineEditor? I use it to top TM backing up during the day while I'm working. This would definitely help you I think.

Thanks for your suggestion and I will look into it but I need Time Machine to be on all the time while I'm working. If something drastic were to happen during my working day (sudden HD failure, which I have experienced a few times), I could lose several hours of work. That's not an appealing option for me. I think the problem that has to be fixed is in Ventura, which ultimately only Apple can solve.
