Thanks for your suggestion and I will look into it but I need Time Machine to be on all the time while I'm working. If something drastic were to happen during my working day (sudden HD failure, which I have experienced a few times), I could lose several hours of work. That's not an appealing option for me. I think the problem that has to be fixed is in Ventura, which ultimately only Apple can solve.
I hear you on that. To address that in the past I have tried to create a brand new TM backup as I wondered in the past if the file systems were causing issues, as I have had those slowdowns in the past.

I'm also paranoid about data loss - not sure what you are working on, but I work on all my files directly within Dropbox - even Final Cut libraries. Its hard on my internet, but then I feel like my office can explode and I'll be ok. And then I follow that up with a TM backup too.

When you say totally fresh install what do you mean?
Just an "Erase All Content and Settings" from System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset?
Or something more?

In my case I tried only the above and then reinstalled everything. But maybe it would be worth wiping Ventura OS and reinstalling it.
I tried wiping Ventura and it helped for a few days, but the problem came back. I have not had the issue since downgrading back to Monterey, but because my Time Machine backup was on Ventura when I restored my data my system rebooted randomly until I did all the updates with the exception of Ventura obviously so keep that in mind and don’t freak out. The first time I tried to restore it showed I had no data, but I’m not sure if that was because of my router because I rebooted everything and 🙏. Fortunately I got all my data, updated all software. Also you might want to delete all Apple apps and redownload them from the App Store because I think things were crashing because it technically had parts of Ventura. I’ve had a silky smooth time on my 💻 so far and I’ve also made a point to load as many chrome tabs as possible even when I don’t need it just to see if it does the same thing. If you don’t hear from me that means it’s working and you should downgrade to Monterey.

I have had this problem since Ventura. It only happens when my Time Capsule is doing a TM backup i.e. every hour or so. I am unable to open any new page in Safari, my Mail shows only blank pages and other progs like MSWord run much slower than usual. Once the backup is completed, things return to normal but only until the next TM backup. I will try Joshualz's solution when I get a chance.
You might want to upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 router and just plug your time capsule into that, then disable Wi-Fi on your time capsule. That should fix your problem because unlike older Wi-Fi it handles request simultaneously. Imagine going to Walgreens and only 1 person working. Wi-Fi 6 is like Walmart except all lanes open taking care of everything properly. I do this for a living and had almost exactly what you explained.

I’m not sure what mac you are on, but I have a problem remembering to backup so I plugged a time capsule in my mesh unit in my office and plugged in a Samsung T7 SSD to the time capsule. I turned off on the time capsule and that gives you the ability to do reliable Time Machine backups. You can also backup multiple macs if you have enough space

I came here just to see if it's safe yet to upgrade to 13.1 with an M1 MBP. I guess not!
DO NOT. You don’t gain much other than being able to use your iphone as a webcam which I don’t care about. They changed so much and I hate the new settings trying to be like an iPad.

Yes, exactly. I get about 4 hours of battery life with Xcode open.
Glad to hear I am not the only one, it means this is a software issue. My laptop is already out of warranty.
I would suggest downgrading to Monterey

I'm also using an external monitor and Bluetooth keyboard & mouse.
I've also had issues with both. Sometimes the Bluetooth devices would disconnect and I would need to restart the OS. Other times the Bluetooth keyboard response time would be very slow - while the laptop's keyboard would still be responsive.
Ventura is a mess! Maybe I'll try to go back to Monterey as well. AFAIK Xcode 14.2 should work on Monterey as well. :(

I will try that too next week perhaps. Thanks!
You should make a Monterey usb installer and make sure to do a time machine backup if you care about your data, but after restoring make sure to delete Apple apps and redownload them from the App store (pages, numbers, keynote, xcode) because my system was randomly restarting. After I did that and installed all updates except Ventura my system is back to normal finally. I haven't even closed a tab in chrome and it's running the way it should when you have 32GB memory with M1 Max.

I have had that happen on an intel mac and I would remove all bluetooth devices in settings, check your batteries and pair them again 1 at a time. Test before pairing the next device. This doesn't sounds like a Ventura issue especially considering using your regular keyboard is fine.

Have you tried downgrading to Monterey and before even restoring data see battery life in general is and if it's okay go ahead and restore your data. Just keep in mind that because it's Xcode is an Apple app you will likely get weird actions that will ultimately crash your mac till you delete it and re-download it from the app store. Go ahead and do all updates except Ventura. I can also let everyone know that since I downgraded to Monterey that my system has been super stable and I haven't closed a tab nor even restarted my system once and man does it feel good to be able to depend on my machine again.

If you do need a battery replacement I would just get the parts from ifixit and do it myself. As long as you have the latest 16 inch model it is easy to change and they even have pull tabs to release the adhesive so you don't have to do a ******** work just to get the battery out https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+16-Inch+2021+Battery+Replacement/150593

I downgraded to Monterey because of the bad performance in Ventura (clean install with bootable USB). Everything is fine now

I've never tried that feature - I go into recovery options, and wipe the entire drive, and reinstall macOS from there. Doesn't get any cleaner than that!
That will not work. You need to make a Monterey USB installer to boot off it and then you format the drive, do a fresh install. That will make it just like when you first got it and I can confirm that since I did it everything is working perfect! so please don't waste time doing resets. I went through it and I fix macs and pcs for a living so please believe me. Also make sure you have a backup and also keep in mind if you do a restore it will restore Ventura apps like xcode, pages, etc. so I had to delete those and then download them from the app store. Once I did that and did all updates with the exception of Ventura.

It does cleaner than that. If you have a macOS USB installer to boot from and then install macOS that will be as clean as it gets. I can also confirm downgrading to Monterey will solve almost everyones issue on this post.

To anyone having issues on your 16" M1 Max Macbook Pro after upgrading to Ventura. I would highly recommend doing a Time Machine backup and then downloading macOS Monterey to create a bootable USB. Once you do that, boot off it and keep in mind you no longer hold option to boot off USB so if you were trying to do it how it's been done forever you have to now hold the power button to load off USB. Format your drive and install macOS Monterey, this will make your system just as good as when you first got it. If you do a restore keep in mind that it will restore Ventura apps like Xcode, pages, etc so if it's crashing delete those and re-download from the app store. Do all updates except Ventura and you will be a happy camper. I have not even rebooted my system since, nor closed an app or a tab and my system is running fine. I even have parallels running and it's working like a champ. I'm using 20GB of memory with no sluggishness or any odd behavior.

Here is the file you need to make a bootable macOS Monterey Installer https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/035M-jiocY-1WtswYSY1jXQWA#Install_macOS_Monterey
Format your usb drive and call it MyVolume in order the command to work
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
Type your password
thank type y and hit enter/return
Your Welcome

Have you heard of the app TimeMachineEditor? I use it to top TM backing up during the day while I'm working. This would definitely help you I think.

Keep in mind that if you are using the your original time capsule that the hard drive in it is not dependable because it is an old mechanical drive. You need to get a samsung T7 and you can plug that into your time capsule and configure it. Also you should not be using a time capsule as a router because the wifi is slow compared compared to wifi6 so I would highly recommend getting a NETGEAR wifi 6 router, I have an Orbi mesh setup and my time capsule is plugged into my second mesh in my office. My Samsung T7 is plugged in to the time capsule, then time capsule plugged into my router, then I turn off the wifi on the time capsule. I don’t think will fix your issue, but you don’t know your time capsule drive is bad until you try to do a restore and it keeps failing. You can test if this will fix your issue by physically plugging in a Samsung T7 to the macbook, let it do the initial Time Machine backup and remove the time capsule from Time Machine preferences. You won’t lose your data, you can always add it back. If you still have the issue then you must downgrade to Monterey and I can’t stress enough that you can NOT rely on any original time capsule drive. Any mechanical drive after a couple years starts failing, similar to your cars, but hard drives are hermetically sealed so you can’t preform mechanical maintenance easily, nor would it make financial sense when SSD are quite affordable these days. You can also technically remove the old 3.5 inch HDD from the time capsule and install a Samsung EVO SSD, but it’s easier to plug in a Samsung T7

I mean I go into Internet Recovery and wipe the drive using Disk Utility and install macOS fresh from there. I have never used the Erase All Content And Settings feature and I never will!

Personally I use a QNAP on my network and back it up over ethernet.

NO. That will only let you reinstall the same macOS that you are running and the only way to downgrade is to have a USB
Here is the file you need to create a bootable USB installer linked at the bottom shared on my iCloud. Make sure to format your drive and call it specifically MyVolume in order for this command to work.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

you will have to type your password and keep in mind no characters are displayed when typing password, you will type y and hit enter/return to start formatting your drive.
To boot off USB is to to power down your mac and then keep holding the power button and click on Monterey
Please let me know if anyone needs any further help.
I can confirm 100% that this will solve everyones problem. F#ck You Apple for making an OS that is ****** as Windows Vista

Hopefully that is just one of your 3 backups in a 3-2-1 backup procedure.
I would agree, but keep in mind that not everyone needs time machine because if they use no apps and don't care about settings/passwords that iCloud could be sufficient. Time machine basically clones your system so it's identical how it was before it crashed.

I've noticed a huge slowdown with my M1 Max with Ventura compared to Monterey. Apps used to open pretty much instantly and now...not so much.

I have not seen any slow downs or hangs, just random bugs especially with external drives.

The issues in this thread look specific to applications and attached devices that are causing bugs. I'm fortunate not to be doing the same thing.

Yes, I think the issues I am seeing are tied to Xcode 14.2 and perhaps also to the disk encryption. I'm thinking it could be tied to the disk encryption because the slow downs are more often triggered by creating a new file, which I assume could also trigger some costly (time-wise) encryption process. Just my speculation.

With hardware encryption engines that is absolutely not the case unless you are creating files on the order of many gigabytes in very little time.

There are certainly bugs to be fixed with the file system. Not only do I have trouble with external drive bugs but also sometimes I open a local file and it says something like 'File doesn't exist' but the file is right there and I can open it if I try again.

because if they use no apps and don't care about settings/passwords that iCloud could be sufficient.

and if they don't save anything on their system such as photos, documents, spreadsheets, notes, reminders, mail messages, etc.

I wonder if 13.2 fixes anything. The update does not show for me yet.
