And in regards to an update tell me one thing.. why do they call the current mac pro an "early 2009" model?

Why did they call the last one the Early 2008 model when there were no updates? Why did they call it the Mid 2007 iMac when there were no updates? Why did they call it the Early 2008 iMac when there were no updates? Why did they call it the Mid 2007 Mac Mini when there were no updates?

No updates without chips. End of story.

What about speed-bump updates..?

Yup, Macbook Pros have done silent speed bumps many times. I wouldnt see why the Mac Pros wouldnt especially when Apple received their Nehalem chipsets so early and clearly overcharging as a result of it.

yea, bluray is one of the option i belive.
but they recently updated mac pro so not many would change i believe

Maybe each of these things singularly wouldn't be worth Steve getting out of bed for, but a group of things he might. The pro end Graphics card (admittedly already announced), together with the Nvidia, 30" ACD, Blue ray, bigger / faster hard drives, speed bumps? etc and so on, may be cause for something other than iPhone stuff at WWDC? Oh - and Snow Leopard.

Due to the 2009 MacPro I can see why some would think otherwise. I'm sitting on the fence though and if they want to announce a 30" ACD sooner, that's certainly fine by me! :)

I personally wouldnt be surprised by a speedbump, despite that the previous generation didnt get one (mainly because the Xeons they had at the time weren't updated for the best part of a year)

Either way, im interested as i got a Nehalem macpro back when they were updated in march and then returned it 2 weeks later, and now i want one again :D

Even currently the macpro CPUs aren't the fastest in the range.

I think we'll see speed bumps. It just doesn't feel right that the current top end Mac Pro is under 3 GHz. I need a 30" monitor and want the new graphics card, so I'm waiting until the summer to see what WWDC brings. It's worth waiting another couple of months.

If WWDC doesn't bring anything good, this is what I'm going to get:

Mac Pro Octo 2.93 GHz
16 GB RAM (not Apple)
640 GB HD
GTX 285 Graphics
Samsung XL30 LED Monitor (30")

I'm currently using a Power Mac Dual 2.5 GHz G5 (one core each) which I purchased in 2004. In 2008 my liquid cooling subsystem had a meltdown and burned out one of the CPUs. After sending an email to Steve Jobs, Apple was kind enough to pay for the $1,400 repair even though the system was 3 years out of warranty -- WAY TO GO APPLE! AppleCare is highly overrated. :p

I'm going to keep my existing 23" Cinema Display and dedicate it to running Windows under VMWare. Best of both worlds!

Hmm.. All this speed bump speculation has me considering canceling my order. Decisions, decisions...

Do you need it now? Buy it. If you don't, weigh the cost of waiting vs the potential benefits to be reaped vs the cost of waiting + possibility of no update.

Do I need it now.. no. Do I want it now.. yes. Will I be disappointed if they bump the specs 4 weeks after I drop thousands of dollars on a new Mac Pro.. yes. So I guess I have a big decision to make tomorrow.

Is the general consensus that there will be speed bumps to 3.2? I mean it kind of makes sense. With the Mac Pros being slightly overpriced (at least compared to last years Mac Pro) they could keep the same price points and bump them to 2.66, 2.93, and 3.2. The waiting game is officially no fun..:apple:

I don't see those either.

The only speed bump of the Mac Pros was in April 2007 with the 3.0 GHz Clovertown. They didn't use the 2.67 GHz Clovertown or the 3.4 GHz Harpertown.

I think a lot of the hopes for a silent update at WWDC (or some time around then) are just that…hopes.

If Snow Leopard is going to launch in the next year and it is going to have significant changes in the way it operates then they really need to make that the focus at WWDC.

Like many others, I don't think it's likely that there will be any updates to the Mac Pro. They just redesigned the interior and they wouldn't do that and then suddenly update it again.

apple wont do hardware updates at WWDC and thats that.

its possible they might introduce a macbook touch or something completely new cause there will have to be new developer methods etc.

No speed bumps for Mac Pros during WWDC. There's no way they would do it, and particularly so "publicly". Silent speed bumps are just that--silent. Apple wouldn't want to advertise it is already adjusting its just launched line of high-end Macs. If it were planning a silent bump, it would have already done so. Speed bumps are not media events.

The 3.2 GHz Nehalem will be shipping by then.

@ MadisonTate

Recall Apple never offered the Harpertown 3.4Ghz. It could have! Also, the 2.66 and 2.93 chips are 95W (the 2.26 is 80W), the 3.2 is 130W.
