Oh great, another contest for US residents only.

Seriously, why is it so hard? Please don't be lazy MR.

Probably because it's too hard and has nothing to do with laziness.

It must be so hard that no other website do that... Oh, wait...

And it is about laziness. You can find the way of expanding contests to the entire world, but because it's "too hard" (I doubt you'd need to hire a fancy law firm though) you better keep it simple offering prizes only to US residents once again.

Well, other people have created companies that build cars and send rockets to space. We are all sure you can do it, right? And if not, it's just laziness on your part and nothing else.

Clearly a very rational way of thinking about it.

Hahaha, right, because making a simple contest and sending rockets to space are equally difficult.

A very rational analogy ;).

Lack of understanding of the overbearingly important and almost random (for different countries) legal details involved, or misunderstanding them, would certainly lead to a simplistic conclusion like that.

And you know, using that rationale, if one man can start a company that is sending rockets into space, how hard could that really be? ;)

I doubt it's really that difficult. It's just a matter of sending out a certain product to a certain country. We've been doing that during decades and with no problem at all.

Obviously buying and winning a contest are different matters, legally speaking, but for practical purposes I don't see how difficult it could be to send a package to a certain person in another country. It's not like there are governments or international organisms involved.

They could even start with NA and EU perhaps, and gradually expand from there.

Whatever be the case, the worst thing to do is to keep doing the same thing for years with no effort at all, even when the website clearly has gained so much readership in global terms.

Well, as I mentioned, premised on lack of or misunderstanding, and pure assumptions based on that. Doesn't seem like going deeper into it would result in much when the premise is flawed.

Nice. Now I read this. Removing my email, twitter, and everything else from this contest. Thanks macrumors for this discrimination.

Never mind, not worth it.

Sour grapes?

Sour grapes?

Unfortunately ultimately that's what it really is. And too often it leads to things being changed and whatever the affected event is--in this case a contest--simply no longer happening for anyone at all. Basically the few end up spoiling it for everyone else.

It amazes me how people don't understand the complexities of these give aways. When they started, and Editor explained. It's not as simple as mailing a package to another country. Different countries have different laws regarding online contests that are simply too complicated to keep up with.

$379? What a joke!

I really don't know if $379 is a good or bad price, but the leather looks like it's high quality. I can almost smell it from here :D

... we further alienate all members who are not US residents.

If other US-based firms can offer international prize draws (and they do), so can MacRumors.

Unfortunately, the U.S. only restriction is due to the varying laws covering giveaways around the world. Some countries ban them entirely, some require an element of skill, some require selection by chance, some have language requirements (looking at you, Quebec), etc.

In short, it's a legal nightmare to even attempt to comply with laws in all of these countries, and we simply don't have the resources to manage it. We really wish we could, because we know we have many loyal readers around the world, but it's just not feasible. You'll see similar policies on many other major media sites that do giveaways.

This comes up for every contest...

No its not too hard at all.
I know without a doubt that is true.

That said, it all has to do with how MacRumours is going about getting these giveaways.

IF companys are coming to them and offering them for free, then they are at the whim of that company, obviously but if they are seeking out companys willing to donate, its laziness not checking with them to see who is willing to ship but that will also be based on if the company has a presence in that country so they can count on new customers.

As a Canadian, it can be frustrating being left out of many but I also understand that the whole population of Canada can fit inside NY State.
Hence, many companies wont feel that its worthwhile opening it up to Canadians, for example, when the numbers are much fewer.

Coompanies that will offer up such goods for free, are usually looking for advertising and this is one way of doing so, hence, quite often they might be smaller companies that dont have much of a presence outside of the USA.

Larger worldwide companies spend enough on advertising and wont look towards MacRumours as part of their advertising budget.

Hence, its just one of those drawbacks of contesting. Great if you are American and whatever other countries a smaller business will have a presence in.

BUT what MacRumours should do is in their subject line at best, first post at worst, is just say,
(Open to US Residents only) unless the contract stipulates that they cannot do so.
The company itself, not MacRumours will want for the contest item to be viewed by everyone, not just a select few and it could be a part of the deal that they cannnot state who its closed to.

Edit:

For people simply looking to win free merchandise you are better off looking towards companies on Facebook that are within your own country.
There are hundreds of FB pages all the time opening up that need to get their viewership numbers up and one of the best ways is to run a contest.
Contesting is a numbers game and there are many that sit at home and enter 50 a day + and can make $50k in retail pricing of gifts they win per year.

Seems like far too much work for me, for suc a little pay out but theres a whole industry of people that do this, housewives, etc; who are at home anyhow and they win something per week.
Bearing in mind that most of the wins are in the $70 and less area with some being iPad mins, for example, one could put that energy into working to make the money to buy it but for those that cant work, its become a way for them to make money, putting each win up for sale online.

In any event, Facebook contests are the easiest if winning isnt based on how many friends you bring the page but if it is, forget it, professional contesters will have all the advantages so you waste your time entering unlesss you are familiar with the tricks of how to win.
But its rare to win a bag of this quality.
Most contests tend to run goods that are last years hot items. Companys clearing out last years stock before their new products come in.

Free trips however are the easiest for contesters to win and full time contesters win 2 a year on an average I would suspect.
I should add that a contest such as this one by a company like MacRumours is likely one of the fairer ones that come out and I doubt being a professional contester on here will make a difference. It likely is one of the few fair ones. At least that would be my guess from the few I have taken notice of here :)

In other words, Just buy the bag if you love it enough :)

So much text and yet the bulk of the details of requirements related to contests in different contraries and what details all of that entail wasn't even alluded to. Lack of information or misunderstanding seems to be popping up its head again.

Seems that people should at least be a little familiar with it all and read up the details that were provided by MacRumors about it all before making statements about it.

Sour grapes?

Actually, I was trying to call out the BS of all the Butt-hurt people from other countries coming on here on every single giveaway thread after the Editors have said numerous times the reason why they do US-only. As if Macrumors has something to gain from purposely only serving US viewers on an international site. I just didn't feel like getting my comment flagged. Plus, now matter how many times you say it, people are still going to jump on here complaining that it's US-only.

Whatever one thinks of this bag, it is not, in fact, a "minimalist design." MacRumors, I suggest you study Minimalism before throwing that label around. It's not just a buzzword; it's a major artistic movement with defined characteristics.

You might want to look up the word in a dictionary. It does exist outside the art world.

Next time you guys do a contest, please put in the header: "(US Only) MacrRumors Giveaway: Win a _______", so the rest of us don't have to waste our time skipping to the bottom of an article.

Whoa! You had to waste ALL THAT TIME?!?! I'm so sorry for you. With support from this community I believe you can rebuild.
