Just guessing....but it seems that relying too heavily on your smartphone to form a habit would result in a weak habit. Better to engage the mind than use silicon. If you want to drink more water simply carry water with you. Your body will naturally desire and drink effortlessly until you're hydrated. More important than quantity is the QUALITY of the water you're drinking. If it's bad quality then you're doing more harm than good. Having to put a data recorder on every single human function and upload it to the cloud is total nonsense.

Everyone here is surprisingly short sighted. Just because you can’t see the reason in a product doesn’t mean there aren’t people who could benefit from it and need to be belittled by you.
Realizing you’re thirsty/your body needs water is greatly reduced with age. Additionally, older people have a higher risk of dementia or other diseases that cause forgetting things easily.

And old people with dementia are typically so comfortable with leading edge tech. Definitely a match of product to market.

Am I thirsty? Hrmm, not sure. Better check my iPhone and $45 water bottle.

This is getting beyond stupid.

What's stupid is you thinking that the bottle tells you when you're thirsty, and not when you need to take a drink based on the criteria you've established.

Hmm, I wanna make sure if I buy one of these, it doesn't get hacked and end up DDoSing the CIA.

Honest question - what's up with you people who can't remember to take a drink of water? You really need a smart bottle to help you track it?
I somehow can go an entire day without remembering to drink any water, typically if I'm really focused on work. I wonder what's wrong in my head, but I'm still not gonna buy an expensive bottle to track it for me. I could just set a timer on my Mac, but nah, I should really get in the habit of doing basic human tasks without computer assistance.

I look forward to reading about the first water bottle DoS attack here on MacRumors. Followed by the inevitable firmware revisions, of course.

No, it’s to ensure that you’re drinking as much water as you should each day.
Pseudoscience.

Unless you're working in heat, a long-distance runner etc, drinking when you're thirsty is quite sufficient. Beyond that, any more drinking is just more visits to the bathroom.

What we absolutely, categorically DON'T need however is a wasteful plastic bottle and a smartphone app to track our drinking patterns. What a load of absolute tosh!

Coming to next years CES: iHat. Wear it on your head and through magical hair attachments it will monitor your hair growth, alerting you when you need a hair cut.

$349.

I have this innate ability called "thirst", it lets me know when I need water. I don't need a fancy gadget, an iPhone for it to work. I just get this urge to go drink water. I could be talking to a friend, busy at work, or going for a run then BAM this feeling pops into my head "I should probably drink". Perhaps I am the only one who has this ability. Its a question I find I am asking more often than not these days.
Actually most of my life I've very rarely felt the sensation of thirst or hunger. That might partially explain how I could weigh 84 pounds until my late 30's. I hit my late 40's and that's when I started knowing why people get frantic for meals and drinks. Coincidently that's when I started getting pudgy. :-/

Still as far as staying hydrated that's always just common sense as far as I was concerned. I suppose if I ever get really addled and forgetful, I can just go get a glass of water whenever I'm prompted for my stand goal or to breathe or some such thing on my Apple Watch.

I'm still kind of irked the watch feels it's got a duty to prompt me to breathe.

I'm told "Breathe" is supposed to lower blood pressure and reduce stress. But I guess Apple didn't take into account grumpy people who only get irritated by this westernized yoga-ey new agey stuff. Just the term "mindfulness" alone is enough to pluck my nerves and raise my blood pressure.

Then the watch plays this little bell tone and this little dancing graphic prompts me to inhale and exhale. Not once but enough times to get my ADHD going and making me want to go do something, anything else, because it takes way too long to get through this breathing exercise. It actually makes me hyper. Which actually is useful, so that's why I don't turn it off. But I know that's not the intended function of this feature to get so annoyed and hyper that I actually want to go tackle the laundry.

I guess it's a good thing that bottle can't be filled with anything but water. Because with my contrary nature I'd be likely to fill it with vodka and pickle myself.
Thank you for your “concern”. It works alright, but if you don’t respond immediately, you often can’t remember if you’ve actually drunk or not, having something which logs it automatically is useful.

I don’t see why people object to people using technology to unintrusively make their lives easier?
Why do you assume that it wasn't a genuine expression of concern? I just read your post and was going to post the exact same thing out of real concern, too and discuss other options.

I've suffered and been treated for clinical depression before and I didn't have quite the same problems you've had with eating and drinking, so it never occurred to me this could be a legit problem for some people until I read your post.

Now the question is, if your alarm goes off and you can't get to drinking or eating right away, but get the opportunity later, what difference does it make if you might have had a drink of water earlier? It's not like you will get sick if you drink an extra glass or swallow of water.

There might even be an app in the App Store already to help you log how much water you drank. I don't know about iOS but my Samsung has this feature in its health app.

If you want this water bottle, though, go for it. I hope it helps you stay healthy.

As a diabetic, it's important for me to drink water. So I purchased this bottle. It keeps track of every drink I take, which then feeds into my Fitbit app, as part of my daily goal. It also contains a flashing LED, that can grab your attention, when you're busy working, and may forget to keep hydrated. This is no different then the "Reminder to Stand" feature, or "Reminder to relax and breath" feature, that you see on fitness watches. We can all use reminders, and if tech makes it easier to not only be reminded, but also help you log what you've taken, as you need to keep track for medical / weight loss etc. Then there is a market for it, for those that need it. So it might seem stupid to most, but to some of us, this is great. And it SURE beats the Vessyl, that won't ever release to the investors.

No, it’s to ensure that you’re drinking as much water as you should each day.

Because drinking more water helps you eat smaller portions and is generally just good for you, and water intake can be pivotal when attempting to lose weight.
If you need to take help of a high tech bottle to take care of this basic task, you are in trouble.

Why doesn't Apple make an app to remind me to breath? That's how stupid they think you are. You need to be reminded to breath, drink, sleep, eat. **** too. I must be a zombie!
So dumb.
Also the weather app is retarded. Wanna know what the weather is? Look outside.

Thanks. We know that, but this is a problem that does not need an iPhone to solve. The point is that, if you can count, you can figure out how much you're drinking. Technology isn't always necessary and, usually, the simplest solution is the best

Scam! Also this nonsense about "staying hydrated" and "drinking enough water" has zero scientific behind it. The only available science shows that drinking too much water can have negative consequences (e.g., coaches insisting on athletes drinking water). Drink when you're thirsty!

I use this product called Remembering to Drink Water. It's from the developer of Noticing You're Thirsty and of course the classic Being Aware Of Sensations In Your Body.

You are required to drink 320 liters of water per day for optimum health. Your body isn't smart enough to know this without help-- it's not like it has a brain of its own, or anything like that.

How did we survive millennia without an app to remind us to drink water?

The human race is only about 700 years old. Any other claim is a government hoax/fake science.
[doublepost=1497846738][/doublepost]First they automated away our jobs. Then, they automated away social interaction. Now, they are automating away thirst. Feeling good about yourself?

I would have been so depressed if this thread was filled with positive comments about a smart bottle. But there's still hope for humanity it seems. Not everything needs to be "smart".

A president: yes.
A bottle: no.

As others have noted - how lazy have people become where they need an app and sensor to stay hydrated. Right up there with the app enabled egg holder to let you know when you've run out of eggs. Because apparently opening the fridge door is too much work.
