MR should ditch vBulletin. MR probably receives more posts than Fark and is on par with digg.

Not to mention you're wasting a lot of bandwidth.

Arn, how long do you plan to look for people to fill these positions? I'm terribly busy right now, but would be interested if it were not a deadline project.

Sounds great arn! I'm looking forward to the site re-design

But I m not. I like the way as it is. It loads without any problem even on my iPhone. If anything you want to do then create a special version for iPhone like the one Amazon has(though Amazon`s not great but a step in right direction). A fancy site with loads of pictures like Engadget is a nightmare on iPhone. Browsing Engadget on my iPhone results in a crash within 15 minutes. So just keep it plain and simple. Play with some colors but please dont add crap loads of pictures/colorful adverts etc.

Be careful. Part of your cred comes from obviously not being a corporately-funded marketing site. Slickness and smart stylishness will probably actually detract from your brand. You are a guerilla site and your look and feel are just about right in my opinion. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Trust me. Interactive brand design used to be my specialty at a very high level.

That's sound advice, if every I heard it! Even over the last year or so, I have seen macrumors soar in popularity - you have to ask the question, why? Because you're doing everything right (IMHO).

I'm not saying, don't do a redesign - just please be careful!

Live video with reasonable quality of apple events would be fantastic!! in a few years i hope this will be reality..

Site Re Design

Slashdot did quite a successful redesign contest, their new site was improved a lot aesthetically, despite rigid guidelines for content and existing structures.

Mac Rumors has great functionality, simply adding a new skin and keeping it clean and simple will do wonders.

I feel a bit of a Yahoo/Google buyout once its done though. A functional, good looking site with this much traffic and a recent server upgrade.....

Good luck, I look forward to it.
:)

We are looking a professional web designer or team who would be interested in potentially participating in a MacRumors site and forum redesign. ... modernizing the design.

Ugh. It works. Don't fix it.

Useless, needless, waste of time and money 'modernizing' for modernizing's sake.

Touch friendly please - little page numbers at the bottom right of each page are a total nightmare and involve a dedicated zoom - slide - touch - zoom back and re-centre

...bit of white space at left hand side for flick scrolling would be nice too.

Nope

Too many cooks spoil the broth perhaps?

If you can't stand the heat in the kitchen...

If we're correcting clichés, that's actually "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Originally said by Harry S. Truman.

Redesign the page so I don't need to use any part of my body to click around.

That way, you will never use your fingers for typing and clicking too much so then you won't develop carpel tunnel syndrome to an extent that moving your hand in any way will hurt like thousands of cats biting and scratching at the inside of your wrist and fingers so when you try to make yourself some breakfast and tea and you try to boil the tea and then the tea boils and you lift the kettle that's strangely made out of glass and then drop the kettle because your hand hurts and the kettle shatters all over your foot and then you fall down and try to nurse your foot that's been horribly sliced up and burned by the hot tea and glass and then you were also making some sort of hot meal that fell on your head because you hit the table when you fell on the floor from all the death tea and now half your face melts off because of the hot meal falling on you since it was too hot and then your dog walks in the room and smells burning flesh and turns insane from the fumes of some rubber that you accidentally dropped onto the stove so the dog is trying to eat you alive but you try to fend it off with the fork from your hot meal that's melting your face off and the dog runs away because you stabbed it with the fork and then you have to crawl over to the phone to call a doctor only to find out the phone line's been disconnected because you forgot to pay your bill this month so you look up at the ceiling in pain and rage yelling "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN" and finally pass out from all the madness.

No, no that wouldn't be a good day at all.

Sounds like a scene for Final Destination 4

I think personally the site looks and functions fine... some small tweaks would help a little, maybe a new header image, that's all I'd change.

I wasn't insinuating I want flashing lights and tons of bright pictures. Just a refresh, because that's what's needed most.

And if there's one thing that I definitely want to stay, it's the logo. It's really clever and it should stay generally the same.

I only recently started doing web design professionally, and as such don't have much of a portfolio yet. Still, I was curious about how I'd design a site like this and haven't gotten to do many VB Styles, so I came up with a quick erm... concept design, I guess you'd call it.

I only saw this post a few days ago, and never put in for the position, so call it practice. But I'm curious about what you guys think.

On Firefox/IE, you'll probably have to "zoom in" to see the images full size instead of scaled down.

I really like the frontpage idea, only some minor things are distracting, like some text sizes..

CAUTION: MikeTheC to throw Wet Towel on Site Redesign idea

Sorry, folks, but as someone who's been through at least three other message board re-designs, I can tell you this is *not* something I desire or am looking forward to happening here. And there's two good reasons for that:

  1. The existing design is clean, efficient, and actually works.
  2. Site redesign is invariably a painful process, invariably introduces glitches and bugs, and creates a learning curve for it's users, all of which is, once the changes are done, for little apparent reward or improvement.

Please, don't do this. I don't want to have to go through this sort of B.S. again.

Slashdot did quite a successful redesign contest, their new site was improved a lot aesthetically, despite rigid guidelines for content and existing structures.

It's funny that you mention Slashdot, since that was one of the ones I was thinking of in saying the changes are horrible and the UI is quirky.

Any suggestions? I'm all about learning...

- On the frontpage: al the bars with the macrumors on the top is very nice, but maybe it's a little too "flashy" or something..

- On the right side where iphone blog, page, macbytes, etc.. is written. It's a little wierd with the macbytes going down and a stripe going above it.. i know this type of links, i've seen it, but i'm not satisfied with such thing...

- The text under thoose links, probably should be in a different font.

Thoose where my suggestions about the frontpage.

- the forum colors seem to be too light for me, maybe a little darker?

That's all, i would really like to see and try-out this site in real!!

Made most of the changes you were asking for. You were right, it looks better now.

Condensed, live example (meaning, you can try it out at the link below):

-- Normally I'd make some sort of tabs or other neat-looking images for the Rumors/Forums/Guides etc. links at the top, but don't have time at the moment. I'll work up a live forum example later too.

Looks good,.. but..

The purple color is a bit too "in your face" and the diagonal pattern on the bar separating the head from the content is nasty looking. Maybe a more chill color choice would be more appropriate. The Dark gray from the original post looked good,.. maybe try to axe the purple and go gray. Maybe try a color MR logo (red/white) with a light glow behind it. Apple seems to be using these same colors in their new products... iMac etc..

The content looks great, very clean and still looks like MacRumors.

Keep it up!
