bring on macrumors 2.0

Macrumors, google finance and engadget are my most visited websites throughout the day. Why not a little change.....

I weclome it with open arms........

Made most of the changes you were asking for. You were right, it looks better now.

Condensed, live example (meaning, you can try it out at the link below):

-- Normally I'd make some sort of tabs or other neat-looking images for the Rumors/Forums/Guides etc. links at the top, but don't have time at the moment. I'll work up a live forum example later too.

Looks good,.. but..

The purple color is a bit too "in your face" and the diagonal lines on the bar separating the head from the content is nasty looking. Maybe a more chill color choice would be more appropriate. The Dark gray from the original post looked good,.. maybe try to axe the purple and go gray. Maybe try a color MR logo (red/white) with a light glow behind it. Apple seems to be using these same colors in their new products... iMac etc..

The content looks great, very clean and still looks like MacRumors.

Keep it up!

looks neat, i agree with djejrejk that the purple is a little "too"...
EDIT: i really like the bouncing scroll bars on the right :p

I just updated it again based on all of the suggestions. I tried making it a little bit more colorful and yet.. less flashy. Got rid of the purple and went to a color very close to the current.

Not sure if I'm on the right track!

Could change the text to dark gray/black, the background behind the text to a dark gray. Still not sure what to do with the nav bar thing still.

a few thoughts

Macrumors.com is in a delicate position. When the last design was done it was not a particularly popular site. It was quite well known amongst Mac-followers but since then Macs (and Apple in general) have undergone a massive increase in popularity, and Macrumors.com has reaped the benefits. This has happened despite the poor visual design and the ongoing 'bolt-on' functional development it has undergone.

Much like the slashdot.org redesign the site faces two options. Firstly do some 'tweaks' to the current design so that readers hardly notice and just get on with using the site as usual. Or secondly, undertake a massive visual/functional redesign by someone who really knows what they're doing.

The site (and more specifically Arn) cannot afford to change simply for the sake of change. I don't know the details but I don't think the last change was a paid professional job - at least it didn't look like it. The next must be. The web is full of bad visual design. Swapping one poor design out for another poor design may be acceptable (forgivable?) when you don't have a lot visitors but that won't wash when you're in the top 5(?) sites in your sector. Any redesign must have real meaning.

I'm not a designer but I was a web developer for 5 years (98~03) and I've seen so many meaningless redesigns. I sincerely hope Arn doesn't fall into this trap, but commissions some truly great design.

i really think the site functions really well. I myself am by no means a web developer, but i am a designer and i understand useability (even if i can disregard it). I think functionally the site should stay the same...basically i think all it needs is a re-skin. I mean...it works...why mess it up. Just make it cleaner/more polished (NOT in the all glossy reflective way). That's my 2¢.
