Wow, a doctor who actually knows how to balance personal life with his/her work life! I never know that such creatures existed. Kudos to you, Arn, and best wishes for your family and the pursuit of your dream.

As an ex-doctor, arn is no longer required to play golf on Wednesdays! :p

One thing people forget when putting a value on this site is that without arn's skill at selecting and analyzing rumors, the site wouldn't be as successful as it is. I'm constantly impressed how arn can put stories in the context of the business and the history of Apple's products over many years. So many news stories link to previous stories because arn has been weaving a pattern out of Apple's story, spotting trends and connections and subtleties, following clues, and making sense out of the complexities.

I can understand why some people on Digg or even on this site are questioning the ethics behind Arn's decision.

I'm sure it was a very hard decision to make, and it isn't one anybody can rightfully make without being in his shoes. In view of this, although I probably would have swayed towards keeping my regular day job, I would have still been uncertain.

All jobs, in essence, help society. Butcher, baker, or candlestick maker - every profession contributes in some way or another to society. However, because the medical profession is synonymous with healing, I can understand the negative reaction some people have exhibited.

MacRumors is much bigger than many members here think. 40 million views a month - that is huge.

Even if there is a "shortage" of nephrologists because of his move, as some people on other sites have suggested, the spots will be filled - more people will be admitted into that fellowship, etc.

MacRumors has become a huge part of the tech industry. Often, other sites that report rumors link them to MacRumors.

Diving deeper into his career and neglecting MacRumors would not permit the site to grow as much as it could be.

That being said, it is clear that Arn looked at both sides of the issue and made a decision that he thought was best for both his family and himself.

Besides, should MacRumors ever somehow disappear, he has a pretty decent fallback plan :p

Good for you arn! You've built up a fantastic web site and resource for us Apple enthusiasts. I wish you all the best and continued success. You deserve it!! :)

Sincerely,

Congratulations Arn on the article, and your daughter! It's great that you'll be around the house to help raise her.

Just don't let us take too much of your time! Just because you have it now, doesn't mean you have to spend it all on us. ;)

Congrats!

As someone who's been reading this since very early on, it's great to hear of your success. Another thumbs up as a fellow Korean physician who read your site often during training in the early 2000's and now is trying to balance the daily demands of work and family. With the difficulties in practicing medicine, there are many of us who sometimes wish we had another skillset available "just in case". Congrats on making the jump and also to your family (knowing how Korean parents are) who are so supportive.

Congrats Arn, I appreciate all of the useful content macrumors has always provided.

Macrumors podcast?

Maybe you could get a permanent spot on MacBreak Weekly now you have more time to dedicate to Macs.

Congratulations on the success, hope it all goes well for you.

Maybe I shouldn't hijack this thread, but I have some news that's semi-related:

I too am quitting my full-time job, and will now be devoting myself full-time to reading MacRumors.

It just really seems like the right time to make the leap. Wish me luck!

I'm way ahead of you, I did that last month. (No one tell my family.)

I think your family is already aware, they called and said they haven't seen you in ages. :D

So I skip MR for like a weekend, and I then I find out all this stuff?

arn, good job on many years of good coverage. There is a reason this is the first site I check in the morning (other than the forums! :D ).
Glad to hear your family is supporting you, and that I can imagine would be the toughest part.

Oh, and good plugs for the "other" site. ;)

congratulations! It was great to have stumbled upon the NYtimes article, and to have been able to get the back story to this website! :)

Best of luck with the career change Arn. I know the site will only improve.

That was a nice article. Now why are you so modest and put this on Page 2? Brag man, you are in the NYT!!! :D

Blog?

Congratulations Arn.

I didn't realize that MacRumors was a blog. I though a blog was someone writing about their life or interests on the web (i.e. more of a one-way flow of information).

MacRumors is more of a news/rumors/forum site to me.
