I can understand why some people on Digg or even on this site are questioning the ethics behind Arn's decision.
I'm sure it was a very hard decision to make, and it isn't one anybody can rightfully make without being in his shoes. In view of this, although I probably would have swayed towards keeping my regular day job, I would have still been uncertain.
All jobs, in essence, help society. Butcher, baker, or candlestick maker - every profession contributes in some way or another to society. However, because the medical profession is synonymous with healing, I can understand the negative reaction some people have exhibited.
MacRumors is much bigger than many members here think. 40 million views a month - that is
huge.
Even if there is a "shortage" of nephrologists because of his move, as some people on other sites have suggested, the spots will be filled - more people will be admitted into that fellowship, etc.
MacRumors has become a huge part of the tech industry. Often, other sites that report rumors link them to MacRumors.
Diving deeper into his career and neglecting MacRumors would not permit the site to grow as much as it could be.
That being said, it is clear that Arn looked at both sides of the issue and made a decision that he thought was best for both his family and himself.
Besides, should MacRumors ever somehow disappear, he has a pretty decent fallback plan
