I realize that you don't agree with my thinking, but as I said, those are my honest reasons for the way I do it. It's consistent with how I've always used my ipods since my 1G in 2001, not some attempt to be sneaky.

I upload every 3-4 days (which is how many runs it takes my ipod to run down). Every time I upload I jump in to the lead, and then gradually lose that lead over the next few days. My milage is consistent and predictable, and I just don't see it as "coming out of nowhere."

well, i guess we all different opinions, i was letting you know mine. it has the same principle as "coming out of nowhere", mainly b/c it's not our job to add up how much you run in 4 days. that's the whole point of having the ipod, to do the math for you, and for your challengers. but if that's how you want to play, then so be it.

If that's what you feel was unfair, then fine. But do realize that was not my objection then, and it is not my objection now. IMO counting walking "milage" that is just part of daily life is invalid because it has no relation to training (especially for a competitive college racer like you).

I (and I would suspect most people participating in these challenges) think of these challenges as an attempt to measure how much we are training, not our total time in motion for the month. If enough people disagree with me on that, we can change our collective understanding and all start wearing our nike+ sensors all day, but I think that's silly because it's not meaningful data as far as training goes.

well, you might see this as training, but training for what? i dont see this as training, and that's why i'm fine with walking miles. i have my own college training, and i have a coach to help me with that.

when it says "most miles in 30 days", if you want to walk 300 miles, go ahead, and i'll admit that you beat me. pace doesn't matter. this is a challenge of who can do the most miles, in any way they can.

and as far as the speed challenges, i just ran a 5:12 mile, and the ipod froze at 0.99 miles. totally froze. the music kept playing, but no buttons worked. this has never happened to me before. i guess i just ran too fast for the ipod

so what are you saying? that you'd run a different amount if I updated my milage every day instead of every 3-4 days?

You don't see the 160+ miles/month that you record on your nike+ as part of your training? Here's how I see "training" - if it would go in a pen-and-paper log, then it's part of training. I don't know about you, but I don't include walking to class in my pen-and-paper logs - and I don't know any other runners who do, either.

That's your interpretation. Mine is that this challenge is about who can do the most training, as I've defined it. Walking as exercise is fine with me, but walking as it's necessary to my daily life is not.

Perhaps we could come to a consensus as a group about what we think should be included so that we can all be playing by the same rules?

I'm happy with any method of uploading the runs.
I've always checked who was around me and worked out their average for a daily run and when they upload.
I did work out QCassidy352's average daily run and upload pattern.
For me it's part of the enjoyment working out what I have to run to add a bit of pressure to the people around me.
Also how I respond when someone puts in a big one and I have to go harder to catch them and put some distance between us.

Maybe I'm obsessive? I enjoy it.
The only thing that would throw me would be one upload 1 minute before the end.
I was looking out for thechamp. He was talking about doing a big month.
No runs uploaded. Then he jumped to 69KM on the first entry. Worked out what he might be doing per day, factored that into my runs to keep ahead of him. He didn't keep it going.
It's all part of the competition.:D

I'm pretty happy with my mileage for April, 206.59k. Up 4k from March, with one less day.

I'm down to around 235, I think I'd like to get under 200 if possible.

twood and QCassidy...bickering about what should not be...here I am the old fart and all I load is workouts - no walking, no cool down - just running - you guys are making me feel young again:p

I could care less if anyone puts anything up one way or the other, but at the top levels of the pack it seems a little petty to be putting up non-workout mileage - just my .02.

I run for exercise - the challenge helps to motivate me - I imagine that I could win if I added my cool downs and walking - but I am just trying to win the daily battle to run...the cyber trophy is just a carrot and now I am thinking less of the past victories when the stats were 'padded'. People will do what they want, but I want to just record workouts to get my main time in the nikeplus down - walking would push it up.

yes, i would. that's the whole point of the challenge. to compete. you have to know what you're up against

yes, part of it is training, but not all of it. there are tons of workouts on the track that doesn't get counted.

but again, what are you training for? if it's just to win this challenge, then walking, running, jogging, etc is all part of it.

that would be fine with me. it's not that i'm real mad about this or anything, i don't want you to get the idea that i'm losing sleep over this. i just wanted to point it out

well, see, you are kinda approaching it kinda like i am. the point is to try to win.

good job :)

you can get under 200, just keep at it ;)

i would agree with you normally, but for me, i have to do some walking and stuff b/c i'm at the end of my track season, and most of my running is on the track, and my mileage is down b/c i'm running faster and shorter stuff.

old fart?
errrr........how old might that be?:p
(if you don't mind disclosing such information).

Same here.........walking is going to push my overall time per KM way up.

good job :)

If I get under 200 I may not look the healthiest, I'm 6'4" and built like a brick house.. As Ziwi put it, I'd be Kate Moss skinny. 200k during the hot summer months, we'll see how close I get.

mid to late 20s if I remember correctly from an earlier post

6'4" and just under 200 pounds isn't bad. i have a friend who is almost 6'6" and around 190 pounds......so you won't look that skinny ;)

I only upload my running (no cooldowns, no walking to class, no walks with my gf, etc.) because that's the only training I've ever considered meaningful to my fitness, and it's the only training that's ever gone in my paper running log.

I upload those runs every 3 or 4 days, or more accurately, whenever my ipod needs to be recharged. That's what I've always done with my ipods, and I think it's a good system.

So there you have it - what I do and why. Anyone wants to do something different with their nike+, be my guest. I'm just not going to argue about it any more.

ok, if that's what you want to do. but i don't think it's fair to others in the challenge, but that's my opinion. you can do whatever you want, and so can i.

but what exactly are you training for? you keep saying you only upload stuff that you consider training, but you still haven't really answered that question. (it's not like you have to)

and i'm not trying to argue with you about it. so i don't want you to get the wrong idea here. and congrats on winning the challenge. even though i don't call it fair that you uploaded 30 miles on the last day. but to each his own. you won the challenge, so congrats to you :)

Well, if everyone else felt cheated, I might be incline to agree, but based on the other responses here, nobody else much seems to care one way or the other.

oh, nothing in particular. But that's not my point. When I say "training" I don't mean that it has to be directed at a particular goal, just that it has to be done for the purpose of exercising, or to put it another way, has to be a continuous effort (not slowly accumulating 2 miles over the course of the day). Although I probably pile up 1-2 miles of walking per day, strolling along at 15 min/mile pace in 5 minute increments doesn't do anything for my fitness. That's why it's not "training" by my definition, and why I don't measure it on my nike+.

It's not fair? Are you implying that I won because of how I uploaded my miles?

well, i've only seen 2 other responses besides mine.

here is where i tend to disagree with you. for one, walking is very good for you. even better for runners, if you want to stay injury free. walking stretches your calves, and i see nothing wrong with walking.

and two, i am training for a reason, so i can't run extra miles just b/c i feel good one day. i have to stick to a schedule, and right now that schedule is to run less miles at a faster pace. so that's another reason why i keep my walking miles, is to stay close in this challenge as i decrease my mileage for my track season

It's not fair? Are you implying that I won because of how I uploaded my miles?

that's just my perception. fair can be a broad term. i didn't say that you cheated or anything. there is no doubt that it would have been a closer challenge if you uploaded your miles more often. try it if you don't believe me (except you'll probably win this month - or at least i probably won't win, since my last race is in a couple of weeks, and i'll be taking time off after that)

not to keep this argument going or anything......but maybe you should consider this: what if everyone did what you did? what if everyone only uploaded 1-2 times a week? i would bet money that most of the people would quit the challenge.....or lack thereof. what's the fun in that? the whole point is to upload every so often (maybe not everyday) and check and see where you are against everyone else.

maybe i'm alone here, but i just think if everyone uploaded 1-2 times a week, this would be one boring challenge
