This is a worthless poll.

I'm unsure whether I will get the 3G Model or buy the Wi-Fi only model. So I can't pick either of the first two choices... I di have plans to buy an iPad, so the last choice is out too. This leaves "Maybe, Not fully decided," which just as easily could mean I've not decided to buy an iPad at all (as the title to the poll asks), and not that I'm undecided which one to buy.

Are You Buying an iPad?
Yes, Wi-Fi Model
Yes, 3G Model
Maybe, Not fully decided
No plans

The ONLY conclusion that can be made from this poorly thought out poll has nothing to do with the question, "Are You Buying an iPad?" From the results of the poll, I can see whether more people are leaning toward the 3G model or not.

This version Big No!

I did not like the first iPhone, it was way to limited, The 3GS was the first iPhone worth getting.
Same goes for the iPad.
This kind of device should have built in front facing camera, it is perfect for Video chat.
And as an internet device it needs to have Flash, or I will have to wait until the rest of the internet gives up flash.
At least with flash block I get to pick what sites I can and cant use use.

Oh and I will certainly wait for the Jailbreak, I have 5 columns of apps on my iPhone, and Infinidock, the iPad looks so stupid with all that empty space between the apps.

No plans.

Having owned all generations of the iPod touch, I can confidently say that's best to wait. I'll definitely bite by the time Rev. C is out.

GPS on 3G Version Works Without A 3G Connection

For the iPads Apple has listed:
What I want to know first before I decide is if that "Assisted GPS" and "Cellular" modes listed for the 3G device a) Give me much better location awareness (I'm sure this is a yes) and b) Will they work without having a current paid access to the AT&T 3G network.

Meaning that if I bought one of the 3G devices and then purchased a GPS program for it, would I have to have paid 3G access in order to use the thing when I'm away from any Wi-Fi nodes even when I have all the needed maps loaded onto the device.

If I can get the better location awareness with the 3G model without a paid plan I'll go with 3G as I like the better option for that and I can see the 3G coming in handy sometimes. If not then I'll spend the extra cash to get more storage on a WiFi only model.
This is exactly why I am against the Wi-Fi only model. I am pretty certain GPS apps don't need a 3G connection to work. And I think a lot of people are going to be upset they didn't spend the extra $129 when they realize they can't run any of the GPS apps on their Wi-Fi only models.

lol some people on here are literally buying this just because its a new Apple toy, probably having spent weeks rationalising the decision. The problem is that when the hype wears off in about a week, youll realise that you're stuck with a big $500 device that you dont need and will hardly ever use.

I know you can use assisted GPS while roaming, with no cost. According to Apple it uses the cellular masts to find out which GPS sattelites to look for and this is done anonymously, will work as long as you are roaming on any network. Dunno if the iPad supports roaming though.

I'd buy one if it were smaller and could fit in my pocket. Oh yeah, I have one already.
I've been saying something similar about the Touch since they came out:
"What a great idea! I'd buy one if it was big enough for me to use."

So I went and played with one for 45 minutes or so at the Apple Store this afternoon. Just didn't see it fitting any niche in my life right now. The web browser is cool, but not $500 worth of cool. The rest of the stuff, it's really just a big iPod touch (to me) and my laptop will do it better.

I wouldn't have regretted getting it I'd pre-ordered, and might change my mind later, but today, post-RFD & post actually playing with it, I'm changing my poll vote to NO.

Went to Apple Tysons this evening....

Had to see it after work, was afraid to do it since that is how I got my iPhone. LOL

Was nice... but not impressed enough - search my posts in the SD Best Buy thread as to why...

Willing to wait now...

Indeed.

No I am not picking up an iPod touch that went through a rolling pin.

How many times are we going to hear this small-minded dismissal? Seems like the same thing we kept hearing about the iPod touch. Only...different.

iPod touch: "Worthless, the screen is too small. Lame."

iPad: "Worthless, it's just a big iPod touch. Lame."

The problem is that when the hype wears off in about a week, youll realise that you're stuck with a big $500 device that you dont need and will hardly ever use.

Uh huh. Right.

Thankfully there are people actually creating and selling cool devices. The rest will just gripe about it anonymously on the Internet.

Well I got a 32GB version. Love it so far

"I lusted in my heart" ROFL for one - was holding out for the 3G model. May end up waiting longer than I thought. :(

The 1.5 pounds was a thought for travel. But the MacBook Air offers much more at twice the weight and capabilities, and my MacBook Pro 13" is just is 1.5 pounds more than that. The Kindle is just about 3/4 of a pound.

The rich media content of the iPad is why I really thought I wanted it. With the recent offer on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Display-Generation/dp/B0015T963C ) - I may give it a test drive over the iPad...

As I mentioned in some threads here so far - it is the lack of Apple's getting publishers of most if not all major publishers of books on board WAY before the announcement - with magazine subscriptions that made sense - is keeping from buying the iPad.

For on the go web browsing - the iPhone works for me so far. When I can get the Time Magazine for about 70 cents an issue in print, why should I pay $4.99 an issue?

Did have a chat with a customer of mine that is a MacHead... and he is saying - and maybe I agree - we are seeing the death of free multi-media content with the introduction of the iPad. :(

Who knows - maybe Apple will come up with a tablet computer like the ones that had the twisting screens that blends the best of the iPad and the Macbook and MacBook Pros....

For now I can use Handbrake to rip movies for my iPhone, so when I do travel - I can not be concerned at folks comments on what I am watching or reading.... had a flight a couple years ago that a seat mate tried to get in my face about what I was reading in a book... Lucky for me I spoke the flight attendant - and was moved to 1st class because of him. :) LOL (BTW it was nothing that would offend any reasonable person - I read books on both the right and left side - he just took offense that I would "buy" that book - little did he notice the library tag. LOL

IMO, Apple would be stupid not to end up offering iBook content to the rest of the Mac line-up. Sort of like Netflix and others are doing it seems. Hope the next MacBooks offer the same 3G deal that the iPad is offering. :)

Being that I am not in the States I couldn't get an iPad even if I did want one, yet. And though the whole time leading up to today I have assumed I would get one as soon as they went on sale in Canada, I have actually changed my mind after reading all the reviews, here and elsewhere, about it. Not that I don't like it anymore...I still think it is fantastic and if I have nothing better to do April 24th I may even stand in line a while just to try one out. I think this is going to be a smash hit and is one of the most interesting products to come out in years.

But I always knew I had very specific purposes in mind. Mainly as a way to browse my digital music collection on my mac when I want to listen to my stereo but am too lazy to worry about changing CDs or records, and as an extension of my Mac desktop...something that would be part peripheral, part extension of the desktop space, but something still a bit different then just combining the two. Im sure the remote app they put out for it works fine, but I have seen nothing even close to the other function I want...yet. And though I am sure it would be fun to have to just surf the web or pass some time playing a game (which really doesn't happen that often) it just isn't worth it for me right now.

Chances are I will now wait until I get a good sense of what the next generation model is going to be like. I could care less about things like flash, cameras, USB ports...good on Apple for making the choices they did. What I am curious about are things like integration with desktop Macs (and maybe even AppleTV), will it break from iTunes and be a standalone unit as well, or whatever other innovations they might bring with it. If it is going to be a radical enough departure, I will wait for the next generation model, if not, I will pick up a first generation unit, hopefully with a bit of a discount over what the current price is (which is really not that bad).

I am sure I am not the only one here who thinks that this is a great device and really does want one, but can't quite justify it until there are more apps (apps which have also been well tested and offer something truly unique compared to a desktop/laptop program) to go along with the fun, leisurely aspect of it.

Sweet Jesus I think I got talked into buying one.

64GB 3G, can't settle for anything less.

You are the exact person Apple wants to market to. :D

Personally, I could find 10 great reasons to get one. Still rationalizing it in my head. But then I remember that it doesn't multitask, not even rudimentary multitasking like my Palm Pre...

Couple that with the fact that those 10 reasons could easily be done on a Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, netbook, cheap PC, other fully featured tablet, makes it hard for me to spend the initial $500 just to enter the iPad realm.

And not only that; Apple's standard procedure is to drop prices and add features within months of the initial release of a product like this. Even if I did want one I'd be waiting to see what the next revision or two brings.

Sort along the lines I have said in some threads...

The key is is if Apple offers the iBook app to the rest of the Mac World.....

Upgrade to 4 Will Be Free Then 5 and Up Will Be Pay

Will future software updates (for example iPhone OS 4.0) be free for the Wifi version of the iPad? Or is the WiFi iPad being treated like an iPod Touch where you have to pay each time there is an update?
Upgrade to 4 Will Be Free Then 5 and Up Will Be Pay. You get one major system upgrade free then pay for the rest up. I.E. If you wait to buy it with iPhone OS 4 on it, then you'll get 5 free then pay for 6 etc.
