Back in the year 0 (on the MacRumors time scale), "Guest" members could post and a different forum software package was used. Maybe somebody will write a book or make a movie based on the thrilling history of these forums.

This was back when it still used vBulletin, you had to register in order to even read the forums. I remember this because I put off registering for awhile because of it.

The site originally had a comment system based on PHPSlash, an implementation of SlashCode in PHP. At one point we moved over to vBulletin and I imported the existing accounts over to vBulletin.

This is why many of the early accounts have the same registration date.

Regarding requiring registration to view the forums... we've only done that for short periods of time due to server load issues. Around one of the Macworld Expos that was done... but it's never been the default for that long a period of time.

What percentage of these 100,000 members do you reckon are active? Based on a quick sampling of the membership list, I'd guess something on the order of 1-2%. A remarkable percentage never post at all, something like 80%.
As a potential point of interest, 13240 members have posted at least once in the past four months.

I used this query.

Roughly 60% of members have posted at least once.

I plotted this graph just to get an idea of the growth curve in Macrumours registrations. very very crudely done in PS :)

Assuming that chart is accurate, MacRumors must have started around the same period that Mac OS X was first officially released (March 2001 according to the the wikipedia entry on Mac OS X).

MacRumors popularity has grown along with the popularity of Mac OS X and Macintosh computers - not to mention those little mp3 player things. ;) It's not surprising to see an influx of new members saying things like "bought my first Mac" or "I'm switching".

If only I had the foresight to have bought Apple stock when Steve Jobs returned to Apple... :D
